But Roland the comment (as it’s not a joke) isn’t actually about her. It’s about a perception than the BBC is so PC that this is the sort of thing they would do. And, I think as a piece of quick-witted observational humour it was within its context (the Betfair Forum) funny.
And what I’m saying is that a I don’t understand how anyone can hold a fundermental view on humour. Surely as you’ve alluded to it’s all about context and content.
BTW, it’s rude to cherry pick or did you not bother reading the rest of my post.
Apologies….i didn’t neccessarily think your reaction to the joke/comment was wrong, but just different to mine.
I do however agree/concur with your feelings towards the merit of her achievements. You made them clear and i just assumed anyone reading the thread would see this also.Reference Ricky Gervais. What he does so well when tackling taboo sytle subjects is in making us laugh at the ignorance behind them rather than the actual issue.
However, when some wag wrote on Betfair:
‘The PC Brigade at the BBC have gone too far this time awarding SPOTY to a dwarf’
I spat a mouthful of tea across the kitchen and couldn’t stop giggling.
Yep there’s nothing quite so funny as mocking the achievements of a 13 year old girl.
Different jokes for different folks i guess.
Take Clivex’s joke from the Alzheimers thread.
Stephen Hawking is in hospital with broken legs, ribs and arms…
…his girlfriend stood him up!
Over the internet i can just about raise a smile at the cleverness and play on words in the joke, probably because its faceless, private and i have a no idea on Clivex’s character. In public or on tv it wouldn’t raise a whimper from me. His disabilty is being genuinely being mocked.
However if Stephen Hawking or someone in a similar position told the joke i would have rolled around the floor laughing.
These types of jokes are only funny to me in the right circumstances.Agreed wils. After speaking to him although he was pretty peeved at us looking on his phone i not only asked what he would have done in my place, but what things he thought were important in bringing up teenagers.
And like you say we both agreed, worse things happen at sea.
Theres that much of it out there though that a nation of lads are going to expect their first encounter to be some sort of 4 on 1 gangbang, every hole’s a goal, face splattering cumfest (i believe that to be the terminology). And judging by my experience theres going to be some pretty dissaffected youth out there!!
PS. Maybe see on on the tables this saturday wils.
bye for now
I agree mostly with alot of the stuff you guys say and bar locking our kids up we have little control on how our kids access this material.
There are still certain aspects that trouble me and these points may worry me more were i to have a teenage daughter.1. The medium that porn can be accessed is not just private anymore. Its mobile and our teenagers are taking it with them whilst mixing with much younger children. Is this a problem?
2. Violent and extreme porn becomes illegal in this country at the end of January (damn it!! i hear some of you cry.) And i would say that some of the vids i found on his phone come into this category.
3. I also think that a couple of videos contained girls under the age of 18. Worryingly some of these are from msn webcams and camera phones from girls who in my sons case are friends of a friend of a friend. In one case, after speaking to him, he told me about one vid that has done the rounds where an older lad filmed himself and his girlfriend in the act, they’ve now split so he’s flashed it to his mates. They are both 16 in the vid and everyone has it on their phones thanks to bluetooth.
We’ve spoken at length now, i’m the type of open parent who would’ve thrown him a Playboy mag at this age, so i can’t believe how i’m feeling a bit like Mary Whitehouse!!
I just had to point out the consequences of possessing and circulating these images, because he is so niave that he has no idea what could happen if he shared these images with someone who may report it.who’d be a parent hey!! And this from a son who doesn’t even have internet access in his room like alot do or is even particularly techno savvy, the poor lad!
My memories of David Vines best stuff usually entail question of sport. Bill Beaumont, Emlyn Hughes and Ian Botham were there, and its not even comparable to todays appalling version!
Its probably another version of "back in my day…" selective memory though.
This is just one complete mess, with no one person at fault as far as i can see. The contention of Moores as coach started under Vaughan, something went on and there has been a division in the camp since. There is confusion in communication between captain, coach, selection and management.
Surely the ECB knew the type of character KP is when they gave him the job. He is demanding and abrassive and in time under the right structure may have made a good captain. ‘Back me or sack me’ is just the type of person he is.
Other points of confusion.
1. Is one captain under both codes wanted or not? If not what has changed? Two captains will certainly make unification in a disjointed teammore difficult.
2. Selection issus like that of Pattenson who had neither the confidence of captain or coach, similarly the chopping and changing of the wicket keeper, the axing of Hoggard, whilst sticking with Bell and Collingwood through thick and thin.
3. The awarding of a central contract to a resigned Vaughan! The main positive i see for the Aussies is that their current bowling line up will have a good run up to gain experience against a very good side before the ashes. Both Mitchell and Siddle are probably bankers come the summer.
I agree with Clives point about the relative merits of the spinners.
Australia’s bowling demise has been evident since before they toured the West Indies but a fit Lee and Clarke in English conditions would still be a challenge, even though they’re 32 and 33. Will they both be fit though and can they both stand the workload required in a 4 man attack without Warne? I doubt it.
All ifs and buts, yet the attack we are seeing over next 3 days vs SA looks woeful. Admittedly i’ve only been watching the highlights but they hardly look likely to take the 17 wickets they need.
if they’re unable to win a test where the opposition are a) a batsman down, b) batting last on what looks will be a crack filled pitch, and c) playing in an inconsequential match as far as the result of the series is concerned, then it doesn’t bode well for the future. As a footnote, has anyone else noticed the similarity between the Aussies newest debutant, Bollinger, and the ugly "hey you guys…." freak from The Goonies! Maybe its a new tactic to scare the opposition out.
I’m broadly with firefox and also Paul (if I read your second post correctly) that there could indeed by higher or supernatural type beings in the universe, that possibly created earth.
I don’t intend to speak for Paul but i don’t think he infered that the possible higher intelligence/being actually created the earth. My own view is that there was / is / will be higher beings than us out there. However their origins will not be supernatural or other worldy but from tiny and incremental changes over vast amounts of time.
My only question is, what makes people automatically think these beings will neccessarily be "good", or of "good" intentions?
Until proven otherwise, there is exactly the same probability that these entities are as bad as they are good. With all the problems and evil, greedy people in todays world there is no guarantee if someone did create this all that is was all set up to be fine and dandy.
You eloquently stumble upon the Epicurean paradox which when i was younger was one of the first things that made me think about my own beliefs.
"Either God wants to abolish evil, and cannot; or he can, but does not want to. If he wants to, but cannot, he is impotent. If he can, but does not want to, he is wicked. If God can abolish evil, and God really wants to do it, why is there evil in the world?"
The philosophical answers to his question are either-
a) God does not exist or
b) God is either all powerful and evil or he is not all powerful. Of which some people conclude why worship such a "god".Obviously like most philosophy this paradox relies on certain premises that are all up for debate.
It made me wonder how people who have no religion cope with death, it must be really tough for them
Back on subject, a friend of mine died last month and he had a christian service. His wife and two girls are practicing christians and as he knew his death was approaching he relaxed his own natural scepticism to aid them in their grief. It was a moving ceremony but my lack of religion makes my coping with his death far from tough. It eases it imo, as does every time i pull into my drive and see the house he helped me build with his own hands.

Firefox,
You will stand alone with those sentiments, of that i have no doubt.
FWIW i agree with above quote.
As for my remarks reference possibly greatest ever, i had no great desire to stoke a debate and should perhaps have inserted “in the modern era”. Apologies. My main desire was to simply put the game into context for the England bashers.
Some of the meatheads on the TMS forum saying that they’re "through with England" after this "defeat plucked from the jaws of victory" catastrophically miss the point. There were many occasions during the India – Australia series where the (far more prepared) tourists would have given their eye teeth to have been in the position in which England entered day five.
i agree completely. We’ve just seen possibly the best batsman ever play his greatest 4th innings knock. Not to mention Sehwag who is the only batsman i’ve seen capable of doing what he did to get India back in the match, admittedly with the help of some wayward bowling. Extraordinary.
Pietersen was skittish, Bell ineffectual and though Collingwood got a rough decision, I still think Shah would have been a better bet.
I dont think i’ve seen KP bat like that before. Very strange, maybe the previous weeks had affected him most. Bell was done by a couple of great balls from Zaheer and i’m willing to forgive him that but he doesn’t quite look right at no.3.
Cue the blatantly obvious though, Collingwood has to be dropped. Though he’s managed to scrap a few scores this year and been unlucky he still looks like a man whos perpetually out of form. It can’t inspire great confidence if you’re batting with him. Shah must be given a go.
I get this inkling though that the powers that be may just wait until the west indies and swap Colly for Vaughan which may cue a move down to five for Bell.Enough conspiracy theories though and back to the present. Priors batting and some excellent bowling gets Englands noses in front. I liked your bet on Swanny, Andrew, to an extent you nearly convinced me to follow. I wish i had, may turn out an inspired choice.
With reference to Anderson, i think the markets confuse his ODI form with Test which has remarkabley flip flopped since the New Zealand tour. His strike rate and economy are much improved. The 17/2 available for him for top english bowler at paddy power nearly got my cash, i left it a tad too late though by which time he was cut to 5’s.I agree with the sentiment regarding englands price. If you compare the attacks of England and Australia (when in india), ours is potentially a more balanced attack. If Anderson, Flintoff and Harmison continue as they did in the summer (during tests) they are at least the equal of the Aussie seamers and i really expect Monty and Swann to offer more than Cameron White and M Clarke.
Whether the batting holds up is another question.
I’m inclined to think Collingwoods shift may be just about up with shah and bopara pushing for his place but i’m hopeful Prior may finally claim the gloves as he has undoubted batting ability.
I’ve backed England at 9’s and Ishant Sharma for top indian bowler at 5’s as even though England struggle with quality spin the market has over rated harbhajan somewhat.
Arcalis 2pt win
master minded 2pt winI can’t imagine that all is well in the Findlay household this afternoon.
I think having 2 of the winning tickets of the scoop6 may have made the day a little more bearable.
