    RE: AP McCoy

A jockey like no other – closest would be Piggot and he is not the reason Kauto didn’t win, but in my opinion he is the reason that Kauto didn’t finish second. Not that that really matters.

What matters is that even when McCoy is clearly beaten he’d rather throw everything at a horse, overuse his whip coming into a fence & ride like a demented chimp, than ride sensibly for second place. This is why he is champion jockey x 15 but it is also why he would never ride a horse of mine, and why I hope he never sits on Kauto Star again.

I’m a horse owner. The vaccination must be given within a year of the previous vaccination. I would therefore have thought that Kauto was given the jab.

It’s unlikely to be the main issue. I know Nicholls has said he likes to give horses an easy time after a vaccination but with the newer drugs this is no longer deemed a necessity. It seems sensible however given the level at which NH horses need to perform

The right decision. He has by all accounts been training well, with plenty of zest. He had an off day, and an issue has come to light. So it is reasonable to expect a decent performance at Cheltenham.

Perhaps I was looking for excuses, but to my eyes Kauto Star looked a little stiff behind as he walked around the pre-parade.

    Did anyone else see this?

Yes, when he was in the pre-parade ring I had some concern. He looked slightly unhappy on his off-hind foot.

During the race he travelled poorly and seemed to struggle with his action – particularly going around the bends.

I don’t think the poor performance is all age.

He doesn’t like AP does he? Second time. I was on him for the Desert Orchid Chase when he wouldn’t start for AP – not this time thankfully. In fact I’d not back him ever again. However I think the Tingle Creek & Victor Chandler performances were as good as any other 2 mile form this season.

Edited – Just realised that editing this is pointless as it has been quoted :D

I think my commet was provoked partly by the "kids aren’t allowed to bring food in" bit. I am absolutely against that kind of interference.

Big fan of Desert Orchid and Kauto Star. Also Moscow Flyer. Master Minded as well. The QMCC was hard to watch.

On the flat – New Approach. He’s been overlooked in my opinion and would give StS a run

Just watched 2009 again and you are quite correct thehorsesmouth. However the difference was that Neptune Collonges was always 2-3 lengths ahead and travels with a long stride. Carruthers on the other hand is quite a small horse with a shorter stride and Kauto was jumping up his backside. Kauto was on Carruthers hind quarters after the seventh and it’s famously risky to jump upsides but slightly behind. I remember an anecdote told by top jock to this effect. Can’t remember the specifics now but the crux was that he had caused the other horse to fall by getting half a length up and asking for a big one, causing the second horse to take off as well, a crucial half length too soon. Nevertheless Kauto made a soft mistake, IC was a good winner, and hopefully Kauto will be back next season.

The way it turned out we were robbed of a little bit of history being made but there’s always next year when Kauto can join the elite winners of 3 Gold Cup.

Just how I felt. But the mistakes were made [shrug]. I think if anyone but Ruby had been riding the jockey would be facing some harsh criticism – and totally unjustified. I said somewhere else that the only issue I had with the ride was getting stuck behind and on the rail. Kauto always travels wider, but I think Denman and IC happened to get there first.

We’ll have to wait and see for next year but Kauto has been top notch for a few years now, so it seems curlish to keep expecting more of him. Would love to see a 5th KG and a good run at Cheltenham. I happen to think he could still win next year.

C4 – They should show more of the paddock. I tend to turn the sound off between races due to the utter garbage they speak but it looked to me like Tanya was ready to punch Big Mac on Friday.

It did until you just said it! Kauto has hardly been inconsistent.

Actually quite correct. I was simply thinking that Arkle never fell, and won virtually every time. Basically he was super consistent.

Whereas Kauto has had the odd blip with jumping as yesterday, but otherwise is just as consistent.

Arkle was more consistent than Kauto is. Apart from that I’d say that neither is "better" than the other.

Where was Joncol this year? I watched the Paul Nolan thing on BBC4 which was great but didn’t see an entry for him

I think Kauto Star has perhaps missed his last chance at the Gold Cup. The mistake at the 8th was just one of those things and but for that I imagine he and Imperial Commander would have turned in together and fought out a great finish. The field quickened soon after Kauto’s mistake and he couldn’t get back into it.

Great run from Imperial Commander who is a lovely type and a real Cheltenham specialist. The footage of Francome riding him out was great and his wonderful easy galloping must have had many a Kauto supporter worried. Rightly so as it turned out, although most of Kauto’s problems stemmed from his own mistake. Does anyone think that running on the rail behind Carruthers was a factor, Ruby would normally have Kauto wider (unfortunately Denman and IC had poached his spot). As someone else mentioned Kauto has made mistkaes on the rail before.

Intersting theory from another post about Kauto not liking the weather. If memory serves all his best performances have come in the sunshine.

They had some great footage of Golden Miller, Flyingbolt
and Easter Hero. I’d never seen Flyingbolt before.

The best part was that he took a drink from one of the halves and then turned around and gave the same glass to the vicar – who gave him a disapproving look

    Hi, new as well.

You’re right – it is said that a horse can’t see directly in front for about 4-6 feet. Which means when they jump a fence they can’t actually see it. Supposedly they decide where it is as they approach and jump from memory.

However, I think there is a lot we don’t know about what they are actually seeing.
