Great to see Kauto Star crowned the King of Kempton today.
Superb performance by the horse. Magnificent for the sport. Better than his Haydock heroics.
He did it against the odds, with lots of people queueing up to write him off not so long ago.
Great for the sport.
Nice to see Sam "Wally" Cohen get his come-uppance too.
Well done Kauto. In my experience, people who are not involved in the industry know very little about racing. The man in the bookies in London who says he,s got a cert is a prat.He would not know if the horse would be trying to win on a particular day.My nephew who was a good apprentice in the 70,s once received a huge bollocking for winning a race. The trainer told him "I bloody told you not to be nearer than fourth" In fact, the horse ran away with him and led from start to finish.
I also experienced "Winding Up" a horse, where a horse due to run in blinkers for the first time is chased around its stable before a race wearing blinkers. This scares the animal and ensures that when the blinkers are reapplied before a race, the horse associates it with fear and runs as if being chased and tormented.I am totally against cruelty but something about the whip rules bothers me.
Everyone who works in racing will know about horses that "Take the
P" and need reminders to show their best efforts.
So it could mean that horses that should have won if given an extra slap or two will be beaten by less able but more willing
horses. Will this not mess with the breeding program if lesser horses keep winning. Does this make sense? Please correct me if I
am wrong.Keith Lewis
Re; Robert Edmondson;
In my previous existence as a horsebox driver Robert would often ride in the box to race meetings along with another lad who became a champion apprentice David Dineley (Known as "Irish after Dermot Kelly who was on The Arthur Haynes Show)
This was when Paul Cole was just starting out at Folly Road.
I am starting to feel really old.
From Keith Lewis.Yep,
Des Cullen, Known as the "Pocket Hercules" He had very short legs in proportion to his body and was a good looking guy.
Does anyone remember Alec Russell or my nephew Kevin Willey who rode a lot of winners as an apprentice in the 1970,s Notably
"MY DAD TOM" and "SWIFT PALM"from Keith Lewis (LRT driver 1970-74)
