I didn’t see the race but RUK posted a video on social media of the attempts to get Hollow Blue Sky going. What stood out was the disgusting behaviour of the horse’s jockey. When it was quite clear the horse didn’t want to race he beat it with the whip to get it going, it then trotted up to the next fence, refused, the jockey turned to have another go and with the horse stationary and obviously not wanting to go on he again started to beat the s**t out of it. Disgraceful.

Apparently a steward was standing by the finishing post to record the result.

There are lots of questions for the BHA to answer over how the case was handled and presented as it was indeed a shambles. However, the verdict, right or wrong, and the penalty, right or wrong, were not down to the BHA. The case was heard by an independent panel and the BHA, like Best, have the right to appeal. My understanding is the BHA wanted six years. It’s a bit like a court case. The CPS bring he prosecution but the verdict and sentence are out of their control.

Racing today was due to take place in southwell on the All Weather track but it has been abandoned due to the weather. How can this track be described as all weather.

Meanwhile racing goes ahead on two of the softest jumps courses in the UK.

Oh dear, not this same old nonsense. The weather is extreme and the course is flooded. Any course could flood doesn’t matter what it’s called. Do you expect the horses to swim? A good tweet by Simon Rowlands on this.

Hope pedants who gleefully point out that “all-weather” does not quite mean ALL weather pause for a while to consider term “steeplechasing”.

stroudy, I hate to dampen the enthusiasm of youth, but save yourself time and money and effort. The Racing Post is finding it tough to survive. The Sport or whatever they called it lasted about two minutes. I see Pacemaker, which was around for many years has now been incorporated into Thoroughbred Owner & Breeder and seems to be digital only.

Print publishing in general’s in terminal decline. In racing, it’s already pretty much dead.

Good luck (and, by the way, don’t waste your money on Coneygree either!)
    Joe

Pacemaker has been combined with Thoroughbred Owner and Breeder for some time now. It is still available in print edition by subscription and some W H Smith stores stock it (I know it is in the Birmingham store). I get the digital edition though, pretty good value at £1.99 per issue. Still probably the best racing magazine around.

As has been stated you certainly can bet place only. You can do this if you bet with the Tote or a betting exchange. If you use the Betfair Exchange non runners don’t affect your place terms. If you bet on a race which say has 8 runners at the time of placing the bet you will get 3 places however, if there are any horses withdrawn you will still get 3 places.

Hoiles gets the job. Holt not considered even for secondry role, apparently because he is so closely linked to C4.

    From The Guardian:

Meanwhile, John Hunt, who had been widely tipped to be the principal commentator for ITV Racing when terrestrial racing coverage moves to its new home from Channel 4 in January, said on Monday night that he will instead remain with the BBC, where he will be able to work on a range of sports in addition to his commentary commitments for Radio Five Live.

Hunt recently worked on the swimming events at the Rio Olympics, an experience that may have been crucial in persuading him to stay with his current employer, on a new deal that will run until the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and may also include wider opportunities for Hunt to commentate on football.

Hunt told the Racing Post on Monday evening that the BBC offered “exciting opportunities… off the back of one of the best experiences of my life in Rio”. His decision will be seen as a setback for ITV Racing, which has signed a contract to broadcast at least 34 fixtures each year on its main channel, and 60 more on ITV4.

How do you know it has anything to do with money? It might just be that the BBC job suits him better. Don’t forget he does other things for the BBC such as the Olympics and that might just excite him more.

Lost Soldier. Please explain what exactly is morally indefensible about arbing. Do you think it is morally indefensible to take bets and make profits on racing via the internet yet not contribute a levy to the sport?

Don’t underestimate how low some no-good punters will stoop. It is a well-known tactic for arbers and other ne’er-do-wells to dust off their initial deposit in an attempt to con oddsmakers into thinking they are drinking Miller High Life. With their second deposit they will jump all over every shady bet going, expecting to escape the system.

Given the omitted details and rather lazy journalism in this Guardian article, it takes a leap of faith to dress up the bet365 customer in question as the victim in all this.

In your eyes is there anything a bookmaker could do that would be wrong? You really do seem to have contempt for the punter, your customers. You called them scumbags on another thread. You seem to think they have no right to win and if they do they’re up to no good. Is this an official view shared by Coral, your employer, or is it a personal view?

‘Theft’, ‘scumbags’, ‘scroungers’ and ‘Spirit Of The Game’. I’ve heard it all now. That’s rich from someone who works for a bookmaker that bases a major part of its business overseas to avoid paying into the sport it uses for its own gain (and avoiding tax of course). Talk about sponging.

but (as always) the message from the other side is that anyone who bets straight and can beat the overround deserves their money……..

….so I suspect that many of those whining about restricted accounts are actually straight unrestricted losing punters trying to play the part of downtrodden winners. It’s hard to admit you’re not good enough to beat the game, especially if you’re a forum/Twitter secondlifer who feeds on likes and followers.

So what you’re actually saying is, the bookmaker you work for, Coral I believe (a bookie who isn’t ABP an thinks it’s ok to sponge off racing), is happy to have winning punters (they deserve their money accoring to you). Then again if you’re a losing punter you get your account restricted.

An excellent article although slightly ironic that the section of the paper it’s in is named Racing Post.
