Yes that’s a big improvement- I hate to see exhausted beaten horses clamber over and through the last few fences and roll up the run in like a ship in a heavy swell, trying so hard but cantering at practically walking pace. I noticed the timely pull ups this year too, much better.
Oh my God the shouting. The endless shouting.
The nadir; 5 minutes of Fitzgerald and McCoy spouting the usual drivel “for one of these jockeys, today, it’s going to be a life changer, blah blah blah”, all the time you could clearly see behind them, the horses in the parade ring. When will these TV people wake up and realise it’s the horses that make this game?
Not ITV’s fault, but we don’t even get to see the horses after they’ve won. Apparently this is necessary, and the horsey types will know better than me if that’s true (when was it a problem in the past?), but even if it is necessary, it takes a lot away. Who really wants to see who pays the bills?
Probably because they’re terrified something might collapse and die on air. Or even have a problem and have the cameras have to cut away from concerned faces and oxygen masks. It was warm and the winner I thought looked stiff behind for a few strides, almost as if it was about to tie up (walked on OK though). I bet the vets would not be keen to have the cameras anywhere near if the pressure is on to suddenly try to save a National hero.
When a horse dies in a fall it is usually a long camera shot and the camera is naturally sweeping on with the race so the stricken horse is smoothly and quickly out of shot, plus there is exciting action to comment on straight away up the front. If the camera was close up on a horse that went down after the race, they would have to do a rushed and jerky cut away, and then go and do interviews while the viewer is wondering if the horse that filled their screen a few seconds ago staggering and collapsing with a thump on the walkway is still alive.
Thanks GM, really interesting to get the post match analysis alongside your preview notes, particularly your thoughts on pace and placement. Saint Are (the best of my picks, the rest did nothing!) probably benefited from wily old fox Davy Russell managing every ounce of his available ability and stamina too.
Well done Stilvi and thanks for a great comp Nathan.
Nice double Steve! Be great to see Yanworth over fences.
Well done everyone who had the winner and great that all the horses are Ok.
Added Shantou Flyer win only at 80-1. Right that’s definitely it now as I’ve backed half the field (Well 5 of them).
I’ve backed him E/W too- remember when he was the next big thing? And Supasundae to win.
My list is
Vicente
Highland Lodge
Saint Are
Drop Out Joe
all E/W
If the winner isn’t in there, I hope it’s on this thread – good luck allBy contrast I liked NJH’s other Supreme runner Beyond Conceit today- step up in trip and headgear did the trick and he got into a nice rhythm and jumped well. I don’t know if he would get 3m anywhere other than good ground flat track and wouldn’t be surprised if they give Cheltenham a miss next year to keep him fresh for this meeting.
River Wylde didn’t hurdle well, looked awkward and a bit unhappy. Sore back?

4.00 Supasundae (nap), Different Gravey
5.15 Drop Out Joe
18.45 Master of FinanceYep- as being annoying at the time, if you want to watch a certain horse’s jumping and way of going for future reference it’s useless.
Drop Out Joe
Highland Lodge
Shantou FlyerAdded Drop Out Joe at 66-1 E/W
Well done Peter H that’s some going!
Thanks VtC, I looked at him last night but discounted him as stable not in form, but told myself I’d back him if their horses ran well in the earlier races.
Thought Straidnahanna jumped decently just distance too short for him and ground perhaps a touch good. Might back him in the big one next year.
Glad to get a winner as my picks have been poor so far. But am learning…Ultragold has given me a little bank for my new hobby
