Absolutely – I repeat what I wrote on the previous thread, which is,  if win only punters’ apply the same logic to win bets then they should never back a horse at lower price than the number of horses in the race. It is all subjective – from picking a horse to what you have on it and how. If win only works for you then fine, but some seem to be trying to convince us that this is an exact science, which it most definitely is not.
Each way betting is another tool in the punters favour – I will treat a EW bet as two bets, and it will be backed if I consider the place element and the win element to be better than I would be prepared to lay.
If you want a 70/30 bet with an internet bookmaker, then place two bets – one of 40 win and one of 30/30.
That was exactly the point I was trying to make on the previous thread, that you do not have to bet 50/50 when placing an each way bet.
…coming back as a four year old to contest the Ascot Gold Cup..
The St Leger still is a top class race, Rob. Look back over the last ten years winners. Mutafaweq won three more Group 1’s, Shantou won two more, Classic Cliche won the Ascot Gold Cup, Silver Patriarch won the Coronation Cup, Millenary’s won the Jockey Stakes, Nedawi & User friendly were second in the KG & QE II and the Arc respectively.
And I see no reason why the 2001 winner, Milan shouldn’t be able to follow up again in the highest company, as a four year old.
There’s always the Tote, DL! :)
Does anyone know if it’s possible to bet place only on the bet exchanges?
And on that subject whether you can bet in fractions ie 100/8, 100/12 etc?
Re Each way betting – a lot of people forget or don’t realise that you don’t have to split the stake half and half. Given the right odds it can make more sence to have 75% of the stake on the win and the remainder on the place, so that you are at least covering your outlay but also increasing your win dividend.
