So are you seriously telling me that you don’t think there is a place for a race like the VC?

There have been some top class performances in this race – Desert Orchid as mentioned, Flagship Uberalles narrowly losing to Nordance Prince, Azertyuiop losing to Isio.

These are the races which would give the likes of Kauto Star the chance to prove exactly how good they are – perhaps not only the best of their generation, but the best for several.

The reason Desert Orchid is so well remembered is not only for his colour and his flamboyant jumping – it’s because he took on races like this over multiple distances and lumped top weight round to victory.

Hmm, I think the language filters need a bit of a tweaking – they must be set for Yankee Doodle language, as you can say w***** but not a r s e! It’s great when you call an American a w***** and he doesn’t know what it means :)

Anyway, back to the subject at hand: this guy is either on a wind up or is the perfect example of "talks-through-his-pocket-bets-10p-yankees-washes-once-a-week-on-the-dole-track-suit-man" that is found in every bookies office up and down the land.

    Discuss.

I reckon its because he’ll probably get stuffed by his stablemate Excellent Art…. Second best 3yo miler of the season – I thought he was unlucky not to beat Ramonti in the sussex although I know people will disagree..

He will be my bet on saturday. I like him a lot…

Depends on whether you count being ridden by Frank Spencer as bad luck…

how can anyone claim this was anything other than a substandard Derby?

and how can anyone claim that it is a substandard Derby?

Is anyone claiming that? If they are, then they are wrong – the jury is still out for both cases.

Perhaps you should be a bit slower to play Devil’s Advocate and actually think about what you post, but why change the habit of a lifetime?

Hold on a minute folks – the only horse that ran in the Derby that we know to be top class is Authorized. He is the only one to successfully win an all-aged Group race of any note since the Derby (unless you count Eagle Mountain’s cake walk in Ireland).

The rest have been winning in their own age group. So until another horse who was well beaten by Authorized at Epsom can demonstrate that he has the ability to beat the older horses and is actually any good outside of his own age group, how can anyone claim this was anything other than a substandard Derby?

Recent examples: Sakhee and Sindar – went on to prove themselves right out of the top drawer.

High Chapparal and Hawk Wing – with a future Dubai World Cup winner a mile back in third.

That’s not even touching the Derby’s of yesteryear which produced multiple all aged group 1 winners.

The Derby looks okay at the minute – and Authorised is top class. But it is too soon to say it was a great Derby, he could well have beaten a bunch of trees or (in the likely case of Soldier of Fortune) horses that did not turn up or handle the course.
