I like Big Fella thanks and Vic Venturi….although the Package could be interesting too.

Also have my usual small sentimental bets on too, like Comply Or Die and Silver Birch.

Even the bluest of bluenoses will have to concede that, as old father Weir rightly said after the match, Rangers were very fortunate to have won.

St Mirren dominated and it was only their lack of conviction and cutting edge; allied to a lack of luck, which prevented them from lifting the cup.

Thomson should have been sent stright to jail for that tackle. The red card he justly received was lenient – and big Little ( ) prevented a goalscoring opportunity and had to walk.

That said, if St. Mirren can’t find a way of scoring against 9 headless chickens, they deserve what they got -nothing !

Just as extra time looms, up pops a Celtic reject to nod in the winner for the Govan paupers.
     :P

Yes id agree st mirren were perhaps a little unfortunate….but what champions do is grind out results against the odds.

Having said that….Thomsons tackle if it hadnt of been done in retaliation…would probably have been a yellow. No way upon seeing the replay on my return home should Wilson have walked.

That reject you speak of has already put you lot to the sword this season  :P

Anyway id much rather be miles behind in the league and play barca football under monkeyheid….than be almost over the line for 2 in a row and have 1 trophy in the bag…………..

    :D :D :D

Another dubious dodgy penalty decision ( ); a gift from one of the black clad loyal brigade will probably see Old Walter’s cluggers lift the trophy – but I sincerely hope St Mirren can overcome their nerves and a biased ref ( :P ) to cause an upset.

The same cluggers that sit 10 points clear with a game in hand over robbie the messiah and the rest of the gallowgate galacticos? :P

I think even those with the greenest of green tinted specs would say the decisions went against us today.

Should be a great competitive game. I’m surprised St Mirren sold out their allocation so quickly. St Mirren have a good chance, seeing as they’ve spent about £10m this season on quality players. Given that they have a team full of internationalists, i expect the Paisley toe pokers to win with ease. It’s worth it just for the singing alone, as we all love to hear classical renditions of Mozart’s symphony number forty from the Govan orchestra. Why would the nuetrals want to watch Man Utd v Liverpool, when they have all this ?

Apart from the fact they never sold out their allocation :D

Its a disgrace they got as many tickets as they did…considering their usual gate is about 4k!

The 2 sendings off just got the crowd up for it.I think wel put dutd out the scottish cup with just the 8 players  .

I must admit going there today and not being as up for it as usual….some scandalous refereeing decisions later changed that :D

    THATS WHY WERE CHAMPIONS :D

NTD has done reaaly well with both Khyber King and Imperial Commander. He deserves all the praise he gets for a job well done.

I think it’s great for NH racing that Kauto Star has a new rival to contend with as Denman really isn’t a threat anymore.

Actually we’ve been robbed in a sense. Kauto Star has now thrown away 2 Gold Cups with some awful jumping.

Looking back at his first defeat I think Denman is a very lucky horse to have won a Gold Cup as he really is very one paced when that tank empties. Many would argue but I reckon, especially after he won his second Hennessy the big horse is as good as ever. This year like in 2008 he had them all at it again he just had more to contend with this time round.

He’s still a smashing horse though but his Gold Cup days are surely over.

Should he go for the National they haven’t invented a handicap that will stop him winning. He is in may ways similar to Crisp and I doubt if there’s another Red Rum lurking in the shadows.

As far as Imperial Commander and Kauto Star are concerned I reckon PN will be chomping at the bit for revenge and you’ll find Kauto Sar will strip fitter than he ever has for his first run of the season if a clash with Imperial Commander at Haydock looks on the cards.

When you look back at this season race 3 out Imperial Commander was going much the better and started to pull clear but then he blundered badly 2 out or he would most likely have won by 2 or 3 lengths.

The fact Kauto was said to be neeeding the race is all well and fine but Imperial Commander is a younger horse and should be even better next year and as I don’t see Nigel TD shirking the issue I can see a very early clash taking place in the Betfair again.

It will be a race to savour if it takes place and I’m pretty sure Ruby and PN will be out to prove once and for all that Kauto Star is still in a class of his own.

Im not too sure Kauto threw it away in 08…..but im 95% sure that he threw it away friday…with what id call a daft lapse in concentration.

Theres no such thing as a genius without flaws

Kauto imo is still in a league of his own.

I beg your pardon! I’m a genius and I’ve got flaws

So my post would also apply to you then…cos thats what i said in it :D

Fist, Ruby Walsh said that Kauto Star was never travelling after he clattered that fence. Even to the un trained eye it was evident that he was not moving with any great fluency. He may, as you say ( who knows ) have made a race of it had he not fallen – but it is my opinion that he would still not have beaten the winner.

Kauto Star will be eleven come Cheltenham 2011. The stats alone are against him re-gaining his Gold Cup crown. He may still be up to taking another King George in December, given his love for the easy three miles round Kempton but, don’t let sentiment blight your reasoning; if you truly believe he will be the force of old come Cheltenham next year ( should he make it there ), then good luck to you and happy punting. I just happen to think it would be a Gold Cup too far.

    Also to Dalry Bear:

No need to defend Arkle’s position at the top of the chasing tree or his superiority over Kauto Star. It’s all there in black and white – speaking of which… come on St. Mirren ! :D

We only need 9 men!!! :D

Kauto didn’t have a misfortune – he made a jumping mistake, something that he’s prone to (or has been in the past). You’ve got to jump as well as gallop to win a Gold Cup.

As for Brennan and co. celebratig. They’d just won one of the greatest prizes in racing (well, the jumping side of the game at any rate). You could hardly begrudge them a bit of an OTT celebration surely to goodness.

OK Then I.C in my opinion won the race because of a bit of good fortune.

OK then if PN wins the gold cup next year with say…Kauto for example……will he then run about sticking sly digs into I.C etc?

    I dont think so either.

Yes you cant grudge them their moment in the spotlight….but thats what sets Ruby,AP etc apart imo from the likes of brennan…a bit of class.

    All imo of course.

I’m not saying it didn’t, I’m just saying that he wasn’t travelling any better than at least half a dozen of the others at the time so he could hardly have been called the winner at that point by any stretch.

I suppose you couldnt but what im meaning is do you think hed have emptied so quickly and lost his place had the blunder not happened? imo Denman never performed any better than he did last year….and Kauto treated him with disdain.

I.c imo took advantage of Kautos misfortune…nothing more but thats racing.

I also feel that the over the top celebrations by Brennan,NTD etc may come back and bite them on the archie. :D

I disagree that he was ‘going like the winner’ until he hit that fence. He hit the fence very early and they were all travelling at that time.

Yes but when Kautos "travelling" the rest had better beware.

The mistake knocked him for 6…just look at the difference in him after it.

well done imperial – told everyone he should have run last year 8)

kauto always was a dodgy jumper – dont get upset about it just deal with it – its a horse race and horses make mistakes

we have got ourselves a proper gold cup champ – finally the end of that laughing stock media circus about this horse being the greatest ever ever  kauto has done well considering winning the gold cup once is most then 99 % horses manage (maybe the alterations have made it easier).

Lets take nothing away from Imperial Commander – i have always been very sweet on him – and today im made up for him :D

    Proper gold cup champ?

He was that far back in the King george they had a search party out looking for him. Also a half cooked Kauto beat him at haydock.

Hes a good cheltenham specialist but imo Kautos early error cost him that race.

    But as Ruby said…sh.it happens.

Well done Paddy and Nigel for getting him right for today!

Loved – the TT Henry style celebration!!! – Huushhhhhed a few today! :o

Here’s to the weekend – Many thanks! :D

It’s good news that Kauto is o.k…well done Denman – but you need a ‘Commander’ in these situations!

    :D

Kauto would have beaten him but for the initial mistake.

IC wont win another Gold cup…in fact Kauto has more chance than him of doing so.

    all imo of course.

For what its worth Kauto Star is the best horse I have ever seen, Im 25 and therefore cant really comment on Arkle.

Before My dad said that I had him down as a true great, but it just got me thinking that maybe you have to successfully defend at the festival to be a true great, i.e be talked about in 50 years time..

Im only 2 years older and id agree with ye :D .

I just think its human nature that we cant give people/horses etc of the here and now the credit they deserve. We always compare to another time altogether and mostly come up with the older one being the better.

Football for example….you get the likes of pele, maradona, best etc put up as the best players of all time…..but il tell you something id far rather have had a Wayne Rooney than a pele or a Best…..but as hes playing in our time…then he surely cant be in the same league as them.

It would need a lot of research to find the worst horse, Foinavon would have been 1000 on Betfair and looked like a donkey.
One that punched above his weight and would arguably have won with a better ride was Just So from 22lbs out of the weights plus 3lbs overweight. Of course he got his ground on the day and was returned only 20/1.

Wasnt Over the Deel a good 3rd at about 100-1 and about 25lb out the handicap in royal athletes race too?

Kauto Star cearly was not on a going day.

On a going day Kauto Star would beat that field 4/5 lengths.

Very early to write him off imo

I reckon Kauto may well have been on a going day until his initial blunder.

After that he was done for.

The older generation who were lucky enough to see Arkle cant have arguments against him.

Indeed my dad said yesterday that Kauto wont be remembered as a great as he couldnt retain the Gold Cup crown, and that only those who can retain back to back Gold Cups,Champion Chase etc are true greats…

He seemed to think that 3 King George wins was not enough to mark him a true great.

I was baffled but maybe he has a point…

Thats true…but what happens if…and i know its a big if…Kauto wins his 5th KG and regains the Gold cup for a 2nd time?

Just beacause he hasnt lumped round 17stone in some handicap against…for all we know….donkeys then he is still wildly inferior to Arkle.

Even the likes of Golden Miller are lauded as wonder horses through time…even though he basically won 5 grand national trials and one grand national itself.

We will never know for sure who are the best horses of all time and everyone is entitled to their opinion….in my opinion of course
