Not looking to stoke the fire, just interested in a view frome someone with riding experience who saw the 4.30 just now at Towcester (of all places).
The winner, a 4 year old, but a winner last time out, went veering off course dramatically. The whip, far from keeping him straight, seemed to send him off a straight line as he felt the repeated smacks.
Probably tired but ………………..
Possibly already too exposed for Zarkava’s liking , but lovely performance just now by Tazahum, albeit in a handicap.
Has some nice entries, still looks greeen but one to watch in my opinion.
Great character in my opinion.
Hope all goes well for him.
Superb.
Particularly love the Dick Turpin one.

P.S. Seriously, I’d pay for the Dick Turpin one.
I think the main thrust of Matt Chapman’s argument yesterday was that (a) racing is not in as bad a state as many doom-mongers are claiming (agree with him 100%);(b) where is the evidence for this supposed groundswell of opinion opposing the whip?; (c) that in an era of record racecourse attendances there is no validity to the suggestion that the general public are put off horse racing because of the whip and (d) why was racing initiating the whip debate when the public clearly don’t see it as in issue (or if they do then they are pretty silent objectors)?
Personally I felt he lead the debate excellently. I personally remain undecided about a possible whip ban but probably lean more to the anti whip camp than the pro whip camp.
I feel that Matt’s arguments – and the manner in which expresses them – to be far more compelling and realistic than the implacable and somewhat opaque stance taken on here by Sean Boyce who frankly will generate support for a whip
ban
rather than its retention if he is let loose into any public discussion. Nothing personal against Sean, apart from his admittely annoying habit of giggling inanely for no apparent reason when broadcasting, I have total respect for him and think that he is a fine presenter, but if we are looking for a balanced debate then it is Sean who will hinder such a thing far more than Matt. At least the latter is on record (repeatedly) as saying that if evidence of the aforementioned groundswell of opinion against the whip can be produced then he’d be far more convinced of the need for a debate / trial such as that implemented by by Towcester racecourse.
To sum up, the poster on here who has most struck a chord with me is Cormack so i won’t bore you by repeating what he has so eloquently written.
However, two things to think about:-
1. If, as the pro whip camp suggest, the modern stick does not inflict pain then why do trainers/jockeys of green young horses deliberately refrain from "beating them up" (their words)?
2. A topical runner today at Longchamp is "WHIP AND WIN".

April 22, 2011 at 16:15 in reply to: Investigations under way into All Weather races over Winter #351599Why me and Zarkava stay in Racing is to see the big festivals…the big races and the best horses and jockeys and get a opinion right from a long way out on these races.
Horses like Sea The Stars and Zarkava are what Racing is about….
Can’t argue with that.
I’m baffled as to why Bravo Echo is continually referred to as Brave Echo.

Bewildered of England
What happened to this story? Nothing in today’s rag.
Not that motor racing has anything to do with it anyway.
No
Totally respect, understand and sympathise with the views expressed on this thread in terms of horse welfare. And I speak too as someone who, whilst I love top class NH racing, thinks of himself as a Flat man and has always regarded the Grand National as over-hyped and of little interest to me personally.
However, the events yesterday only mirror what we see in NH racing every day of the week. It is upsetting but the only option is to ban jump racing (not just the Grand National) and I for one would regard that as not only a wrong move, but an utterly stupid one.
Paul Nicholls lost 2 horses last summer running around in the paddocks. The fact is that, sadly, horses get injured in all sorts of circumstances and just because the one race of the year that Joe Public can be arsed to watch ends with 2 fatalities should not force those that love the sport to make far reaching changes or to feel embarrassed.
Nice ride by R L Moore on Quest For Peace.
Ridden more prominently. Penny drops.
for Ryan Moore.
This guy is so superior to every other rider in Europe. I thought his ride on Master of Hounds was exceptional as was his ride on other Coolmore horses through the years. I know Moore has a good job at Stoute but surely they could get him over on Sundays to ride and maybe Thurs evenings. I know Champion Jockey is important to him but surely Big races are more important to him now that he has reached a certain level.
Any opinions?
He ain’t very superior today.
Seaney Levey should be recalled at once.
Seriously, I admire Ryan enormously but his rides today have been very curious.
