It would be nice to see a few northern winners. Ferdy Murphy always lays a few out for the meeting, but most have no way of competing now with the big Southern yards plus the Irish raiders, notably Willie Mullins, who is on a par with Nicholls, Henderson etc. No one like the Dickinsons or Peter Easterby targeting the meeting, Tim Easterby seems to be Flat orientated as are most of the top Northern yards.

Good to see the mystery solved, Bob. I would never have thought of the name although I do remember it now. I see a couple of snippets about VP on the internet in old highlights. He seemed to ride for a trainer Tony Kemp ( that rings a distant bell also). He had 3 placed horses for TK- Dec 1973 at Catterick on Siege, March 74 at Sedgefield on Dark Man ( 2nd to Michael Dickinson) and March 76, 2nd again at Teeside to Jonjo O’Neill. Little bit of info anyway.

Any possibility of it being D V (Dave}Dick- he may have ridden up to mid 1960s. he wouldn’t have been a northern jock, but could have ridden the horse in some early races? before Mellor became regular rider. At least it’s a double initialled name!

Sorry, Bob. I can’t think of a jockey with the 2 initials of that era other than G W Robinson and he rode for Fulke Walwyn in south. I can remember a few Northern jocks from mid 1960s- might ring a bell with you- Paddy Broderick, Stan Hayhurst, Pat Buckley, Gerry Scott, George Milburn, Jumbo (B) Wilkinson, Roy Edwards, Steve Davenport ( these 2 more Midlands). An old Directory of the Turf from mid 1960s would list all the jocks of that time. Regards.

    Hi,

The only jockey I remember as a regular rider was Stan Mellor who won the Hennessy on him against Arkle. Terry Biddlecombe rode him in one of the Gold Cups, could have been 1967, when Mellor not available. I can’t ever remember him running much up north. He was trained by Frank Cundell at Aston Tirrold in Oxfordshire, I think he mainly ran at Southern tracks.

Ann Duffield seems to have a good set up at Constable Burton near Middleham, N. Yorks. Owner friendly, good record with 2yos lately. Not overly large stable and horses well looked after, husband George is chief workrider. MPR like to have a few horses with her also and have done well.
