Hoiles is a class apart in my view. The breadth of his commentary vocabulary is terrific and he balances this perfectly with getting the important facts across in a timely fashion. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the game shine through as well. I think I heard he is a fair punter, which doesn’t surprise me at all.
Yes, it seems to me that over jumps there are a lot more promotions than relegations in this regard, which leads to the general question: are jumps horses as a group really getting better, or is this a case of grading inflation?
I welcome this being an RUK subscriber, and even if I wasn’t I’d rather watch C4 than ATR – I believe the former’s Royal Ascot coverage will be extensive anyway. The main value I get from ATR is the coverage of the Irish meetings.
Rock On Ruby has gone for a bit of a walk in the market – the 10/1 now looks quite good value unless it is the result of something specific – anyone heard any negative rumours about him?
I’m looking forward to seeing Days Hotel if he is fit again. He beat Lucky William comfortably (who went on to win a Grade 1 at Punchestown) in his last novice chase before he succumbed to injury. He is still listed as in training on Henry de Bromhead’s website, but I don’t know any more. Anyone know how he is?
Paul Nicholls in Racing Post 3/9/12:
"Over the summer…people have been asking after Kauto. They all want to see him retired."
"I remember seeing Desert Orchid as a 12 year old having a crashing fall in the King George. I couldn’t bear anything like that happening to Kauto."
My suspicion is that expectations are being set for a retirement announcement.
I’m quite new to the forum but now this has been brought back to the top I’ve just read the entire thread and very entertaining it was too! It is rather timely too having just been wowed by Rebecca Curtis’ big blue eyes on page 22 of the latest ‘Weekender’…
I too have backed Sonofvic. I notice the biggest price available is now 33/1 but if he continues to progress the price has the ability to shorten significantly with him being a chaser trained by Paul Nicholls.
Hi Jeffrey
I’m new to this forum but not to betting.
I agree with kasparov that generally bookmakers’ each way odds are not good value (though occasionally they are as has been mentioned).
I’ve often thought of each way betting as an insurance policy against the psychological damage of long losing runs. Like all insurance though you pay a premium for it.
As I’ve become more experienced, and especially as I’ve gained confidence (and patience) by backing longer priced winners win only, I’ve found that I hardly back each way any more.
It can also depend on your approach to generating selections though. Some punters lay great store by first selecting the best races to bet in by number of runners and each way betting shape, whereas others might be convinced a particular horse was a good bet irrespective of these factors.
