Great to see Double Seven & Seabass go head to head today in a Novice Hurdle at Punchestown today.
Seabass ran another sound race, but as I’ve said before, I’m not sure a return to The National would be wise, but I’ll watch the situation with interest. Double Seven was very encouraging though, his first run since that day in The 2014 National, he was running on well at the end, & it was a promising performance, which makes the 50’s for this years race very tempting.
Golden Wonder, who would have been my #1 hope last season, makes his comeback over timber at Fairyhouse tomorrow. Injured in last years Munster National, he was a big hope for Aintree, following his close second to Shutthefrontdoor in the 2014 Irish National. If sound, I reckon he’ll be a big player in this years race, and with it being the aim before his injury last year, he’s sure to be getting targetted for it this time around. Looks on a very fair chase mark as well.
Double Seven & Golden Wonder both entered up at Punchestown on Sunday.
Double Seven is set to run in a Pertemps qualifier, and I’d love to see him to take this route, before heading to Aintree, as he looks very very well treated over timber.
Golden Wonder takes in The Grand National trial, and a nice wee run into a place would suit just fine. Not quite as impressive as Double Seven on his return over hurdles, but entitled to come on for that. The National trial is full of likely looking candidates for Aintree, including Golden Wonders stablemate Lyreen Legend. Never really thought of him as the obvious type for a marathon trip, but he could potentially sneak into the line up on a nice weight, so again, a nice respectable run round might be ideal for him. Not one I’d rush to bet, but I’ll keep him in mind anyway.
As I said, loads of probable types entered up, and one who’s really impressed me this year is Riverside City, but he would have to win by half the track on Sunday to get in at Aintree, and he might just be one for next year.
The Skybet Chase this weekend is also likely to feature a few potential National runners, and THM’s fine shout, Holywell, could get a run. The more I think of him, the more I think The National is a good shout, especially with that spring ground he loves, so he’s another who doesn’t necessarily want to win this weekend. The same could be said of Double Ross, who also holds an entry. Very much like the Punchestown race, The Skybet could throw up a few new contenders.
My main fancies at the moment are The Young Master & Cause of Causes.
The Young Master is entered up in The Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham, but he’ll be of more interest to me once the weights are framed. I’m hoping to see him take in Kemptons Betbright Chase next month, though no surprise to see him head for the 3 miler at The Festival.
Cause of Causes looks ridiculously well treated at the moment, and though I always prefer a horse who hasn’t ran in the race before, he looks well set to improve on his finishing position last year. I’m hoping to see him take in The Kim Muir en-route.
With the entries set to be revealed next week, the first dark horse who looks to be getting an entry is Onenightinvienna. I thought of him more as a Scottish National horse this year, but he’ll be an interesting runner here for sure.
Midnight Prayer looks to be heading here off the back of his second place in The Classic Chase, and although I’ve threw a few quid at him on Betfair, he remains risky antepost with him being very fragile.
Finally, and don’t laugh, but does anyone think Vroum Vroum Mag will get an entry? Connections have the more likely Ballycasey, but I don’t know, something tells me they might give the mare a speculative entry.
I really like Golden Wonder too I emailed the trainer after his last run and she confirmed Aintree was the target.
I’ve met her on a number of occasions. She is a wonderful woman and very successful in her own right.
Great stuff !
Looking forward to part 2
Monsignor was awesome. The roar at Cheltenham when he came up the hill was super.
Good memoriesI loved Monsignor, what a horse and who knows how much he would have achieved over fences? He certainly had the size and we know he had a great engine, I reckon he would have gone to the top.
Monsignor versus Best Mate could have been a great rivalry over fences.
Amazing that it was something as innocuous as corns that did for his racing career
I believe Malcolm Denmark continues to own Weathercock Farm.
Maybe Hughes is moving there because he has the option to purchase the yard where that option may not have been available at Ken Cunningham Brown’s yard.
The pull of being an owner rather than a renter may have been the reason behind the move.
Obviously location, facilities and value for money would have been other issues but I wouldn’t think it was anything sinister rather opportunity and options.
Two group ones at Saint Cloud tomorrow
Johannes Vermeer in the first over 7f
Idaho in the second over 10f
Racing POst saying going is very soft
Hi Bobby, further to your reply:
Regarding Kris Kin, he is outside my 12 year sample, although I am puzzled as to why he had a rating for running in 2 Maidens whereas North Light for example did exactly the same but did not?
I admit I have taken a flyer, but can you really see the 2nd or 3rd getting a hike for their RPT runs? I had assumed there was no chance of this.
You assumed right Tatling Johannes Vermeer rated 109 and Foundation a pound higher.
Hmm. Not convinced with that TAPK.
Over the last 12 years, no Derby winner to come out of their juvenile season with an OR have been rated as low as Johannes Vermeer or Foundation.
*NB – These horses did not receive a rating – Ruler of The World didn’t run at 2. Pour Moi had ran in two low level French races, winning the second. Workforce, North Light & Golden Horn had ran in (winning) Maidens only at 2.
Foundation perhaps has extenuating circumstances due to a true horror passage, although his Derby profile as a RPT also-ran looks extremely shaky.
Johannes Vermeer looks pretty much exposed to me, having won a G3 and failed twice at G1 level. Doesn’t scream, or even whisper, ‘Derby’ to me.
The handicapper hasn’t reassessed Saturday’s runners yet. Chances are he will raise the two mentioned by a few pound which would put them ahead of Sea the Stars who lined up in the Guineas rated 112.
Kris Kin was rated 86 when he lined up for his first run as a 3 year old.

All of Aidan O’Brien’s Derby winners started favourite on their debuts bar Ruler of the World who was 2/1.
Idaho’s starting price on his debut was 4/1…just saying

I thought it was a very encouraging debut Darren. The second looks decent as well.
Unlucky BigG, at least you had it each way.
Very good shout
How do we see the 2yo races at Longchamp o’Brein has fav for both bit shocked to see
Johannes Vermeer here he looks like a derby horse better off at Doncaster he be.Darren, I’m looking forward to seeing the unbeaten Ultra. He’s very closely related to Swedish Sailor who thumped Noble Mission 5 lengths on their debuts a few years ago but then got injured at the beginning of his 3 year old season and was never the same.
Fabre could have run Cloth of Stars in this (same ownership) but he is due to run in the Group 3 Prix De Conde on Monday. cloth of Stars has already won a Group 3.
Ultra is going from a conditions race straight to a group 1.
Ultra has a Derby entry and is bred for middle distances.Didn’t realise the Lagardere had been increased to a mile.
He did me proud today.
Looking forward to his 3 year old career now, hopefully that will include a stop off in Epsom

Steve, Gosden may have said he’s a Guineas/10 furlong horse but he seems to have told Harry Herbert something a little different;
Trainer John Gosden was delighted with the performance, and said: “He’s a grand horse but he’s still learning.
“Frankie (Dettori, Foundation’s jockey) tried to teach him as much as he could as he didn’t learn a great deal at Haydock last time, and I’m pleased that he was able to cope with the speed of this test so early in his career.”
There may be doubts whether he would get the Derby trip, but Harry Herbert, racing manager for owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, said: “It’s a tricky one given his pedigree but team Gosden seem to think he will stay, and the Derby has been mentioned in dispatches, although it is a bit premature at this stage.”
