We play an absurd game when we start to try to justify the sport from the bottom up.
However I shall play.
In some absurdist nirvana maybe not, maybe but not necessarily. However if it’s exploitative of dumb animals it’s not the worst. It’s not even close. The animals are bred and brought up to do it. The main crime is when retired racehorses are not found a field and food somewhere.
What is immoral? Killing mosquitos. Slaughtering ants. Mouse traps. Riding horses for a day out. Racing horses. Meat eating. What is? None of these.
You want moral relativism.
The UK arms industry supplies despots with weapons. It takes massive sums to supply often sub standard equipment to our own Troops. It then employs these commissioning Generals etc on retirement to influence the next generation. We do these things in the name of jobs nothing more.
Our political leaders supported a war without the Geneva convention, connived at the promotion of torture and rendition etc
Horse racing is not immoral absolutely or relatively in a modern society.
The bottom is from my blog. I really think that we/BBC go down a silly path over sentimentalising the deaths. They are going to happen. The spectacle of bypassing fences with dead horses was not good but I still found it thrilling at the finish.
If less people want to watch the National and Clare Balding has moral qualms then so be it – I would not weep for the race personally. However The National is not something jump racing can just stop – the levy dear boy the levy!
The fences are now fair and as mentioned making them even softer will not help. It is what it is.
I hope it gets less popular it does seem bizarre that in a limited pool of chasers 10+ good ones are held back jumping over hurdles and running down the field for this 1 race.
======================
The truth is horses race.
They race over jumps.
They sometimes die from injuries sustained running over jumps.
There is no solution to this.
It’s neither cruel nor unusual.
It’s not moral or immoral.
If the spectacle is that objectionable then the people will not watch and the race will end.
Am torn between a Denman lay and Punchestowns bet.
Carole’s Legacy is small and may be even better in a small field over fences – could even be what she needs but has plenty to find – as arguably does Punchestowns. However she will have to jump these normally stiff obstacles.
Punchestowns has won 3 of 4 chases away from Cheltenham at odds on. So has only beaten horses rated inferior to himself! Whilst his times have impressed Mordin. His two main wins from near impossible positions (Pasco & Tchico Polos) suggest he’s one paced (he was a staying hurdler after all).
Carole’s is though the kind of safe play but even Denman running on a track he dislikes will be expected to run to better form than she has so far. Denman has shown a tendency to fall mind when stretched by accelerations in small fields on flat tight tracks
Punchestowns @ 6s is worth the chance but he’ll not be a confident selection. However the value is massive given the race may not take a lot of winning. I would have been with Neptune were he declared.
An argument to forecast up the next 2 or 3 challengers as well.
Does Albertas run? No idea why 2 horses who have btn Poquelin are behind him in the betting. Both booted 4.5 lengths into him [Tranquil (rec 2lb) and Albertas] over a similar CD. Tranquil Sea’s record suggests he needs to be fresh and is this year. I think they both maybe value @ 13/2 and 10s NRNB.
Is this due to the boost in ratings good horses get for beating handicappers under top weight?
would like them but also it would be a first priority if we knew exactly what distances races actually took place over first…..
I voted no. Happy to see him go if he is incompetent at his job.
Nonetheless hard to think of anyone in racing who is not equally or more conflicted. Tipsters, Journalists, Bloggers, Owners, breeders, punters, jockeys, trainers etc etc
If he had personally bought the shares for himself fine but for me it’s trivial.
