I would pay good money to see this filly go head-to-head with the Australian filly Samantha Miss over 1m1f.
October 25, 2008 at 03:58 #186315Best filly in the world the Yanks reckon! Not a chance Zarkava would pick her up and carry her, different league.

Very impressive. She’s a big girl, isn’t she.
Not so imprssed with the track though – saw an aerial shot of it on RUK’s coverage and it’s a perfectly regular oval shape. How boring. One of the many reasons I could never get too excited by American racing.

I’ll reply here and not in the ‘Zenyatta’ thread I started on 06/10!!
What a performance! The amount of ground she made up was astonishing. Well, she had to be kind and give them a head start! She never appears to be doing much, just ambling along, but she covers so much ground.
She could even improve again next year and she’ll be a force against the colts, no question.
Ian, perhaps you’re right, but the sad thing is we’ll never know. The chances of Zarkava and Zenyatta colliding were very slim even if the French filly had stayed in-training.
Zarkava no longer enters the debate of ‘best filly in the world’. It’s a big ask, but if Zenyatta remains unbeaten and claims the BC Classic next year, she’ll surpass Zarkava, in my opinion.
Zenyatta is unbeaten in nine now. She’ll return next year as a 5YO (take note Aga) and will be given the opportunity to become a true legend.
What a physical specimen she is, too! You would need two Zarkava’s to make one Zenyatta.
October 25, 2008 at 15:25 #186356Lush Lashes would’ve beaten that field as impressively as Zenyatta did. She’s a good filly no doubt but once again because its a US horse we get "best in the world" stuff. We get it every year if its not Curlin its Big Brown, if its not Big Brown its Barbaro 90% of the time its typical American overhype.
Bugs me to be honest not so much that the Americans come out with this type of stuff because thats what Americans do everything has to be bigger and better but the fact that certain sections of our media do the same thing. Let them contest the big races in our back yard on our terms. If Curlin beat Duke Of Marmalade over 10 furlongs on European turf I’d be truely flaberghasted.
Zarkava destroyed the best of the Europeans without the whip being shown let Zenyatta do the same then lets compare. She won’t of course and in reality she almost certainly wouldn’t even given the opportunity.
October 25, 2008 at 16:28 #186366Zenyatta can not be considered one of the great fillies until she beats the colts in a Group 1 IMO.
October 25, 2008 at 22:38 #1864241. I never suggested she would beat the top European filles on turf in "our own back yard".
2. I never suggested she’s a world beater.
What I appreciate her for is simply being the best filly in the states – and that’s where she was running.
Rather than crab her, I enjoyed watching a very good racehorse win with authority.

She made up plenty of ground last night, but wasn’t all that impressive to my eye. I’d be prepared to take her on in anything that resembled a competitive race, especially against the colts.

I wouldn’t consider Curlin’s career to be ‘overhyped’. He’s won over $10 million in prize money and recorded victories in the Dubai World Cup and Breeders Cup Classic.
I think it’s unfair to use Barbaro and Big Brown as examples. Big Brown was prematurely retired due to injury and poor Barbaro lost his life before he could fulfil his potential.
American’s are the master of hype. Hype puts bums on seats and in the case of Curlin it was justified.
Prior to Saturday’s events, he was the best horse in the world.
I don’t think we talk our chances down, neither do I believe we encourage ‘American overhype’. More often than not, in almost every sport, we overhype our chances and end up with egg on our face. Considering the battering we’ve taken in previous visits Stateside, it’s only natural for us to adopt the softly-softly approach.
I think the majority of the British racing public expected a huge effort on Saturday. We assembled our strongest squad for a very long time, one that wasn’t restricted to a couple of races.
In fact, a lot of credit should be given to the Breeders Cup officials for evolving their original format to encourage a stronger european invasion.
Zenyatta is unbeaten in nine starts now and a multiple Grade One winner. She needs a victory over the colts to reach the same level as Zarkava, but that’s not out of the question. She’ll be given the opportunity to do that next year.
For now, I agree with wilsonl. Let’s enjoy a beautiful, talented filly who clearly has the potential to become a legend. She’s a real fairytale story and her quirky character makes her even more appealing.
I’m sure if she could talk, she’d say ‘Now bring on the boys!!’
