I don’t know if Steve inhabits this corner of the forum. I suspect he and his family were very busy today, judging by the overhead messages on the M74.

A highways agency warning said anyone travelling in severe icy conditions should take a decent sized shovel, blankets, sleeping bag, extra clothing, including a scarf, thick warm hat, thick warm gloves, A 24 hour supply of food and drink, de-icer, rock salt, torch, tow rope, knife, petrol can, first aid kit and jump leads. I must have looked a right prat on the bus this morning with all that gear on..

Being Mr Green, I’ve just got myself another new bicycle.
The miles I rode on the last one I reckon I’ve saved myself millions in petrol, mot, tax, insurance and road rage although I still shout at the twat’s that seem to think it’s clever to cut me up in the cycle lane. The last one died(bike not road rager) after going up a really steep hill giving my son a seat-er, I forget he’s growing all the time, going to get him one. I replied to an advert in the local paper for a boys bike and this woman on the phone said it’s in great nick and perfect for a 8 year old boy. I gets there and the front tire is flat as a pancake so I said to her with a straight face I’ll take it if you give me a fiver. She was not impressed, so I left her to ponder why I didn’t take the bike. Lots of bicycles on gumtree but you have to be careful in-case it’s some burglar selling them on. :|

    A seat-er?

Do you mean a croggy? Strictly speaking a croggy is a ride on the handlebars but "when I were a boy" it was ride anywhere on the bike

No not the handlebars, the boy gets the seat.
I have to pedal standing up, it’s made tougher when he wraps his arms around my neck.

I picked the boy a bicycle up out of the skip.
I told him to take it for a spin up the road and back. He crashed into the wall at the top of the road. ‘What happen I asked him’?. The brakes didn’t work Dad’ he replies.
What does he expect from a bike from the tip……..

My name appears on a lot of road signs and judging by the one below I am as bad as Jimmy Saville:-

Son says today ‘Where’s me bike, dad?’
‘back in the tip’ I tell him
‘Couldn’t you fix the brakes?’ he questions
‘yes, I could of, but you smash the bloody tire in half when you hit the wall’

Aye I would often give my Brother a ‘Backie’ to school on my Red Chopper,it had quite a long seat for a Bike with a label attached saying not to carry passengers!A slide shift 3 cog Gear box was the latest craze back then…Until the ‘Grifter’ came along!

Oh yeah, your Mother never quite knew what you meant when you told her you had banged a couple of stones when riding your Chopper, thus causing the John Wayne walk into the kitchen.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Up here in in Caithness it was known as a "seatie" if the passenger was on the seat and a "barrie" if the passenger sat side saddle on the bar in front of the pedaller.

Of course, girls bikes with their 45 degree bars were no use for "barries" unless you wanted to slide down and have your knackers chomped by the chain

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
