I just about remember Lefrak City, but another Capt Forster horse Pegwell Bay, really smashing horse, pity what happened.

God I could go on all day! They’re a mixed bag mind…Interesting that you like Him Of Praise and Killeshin. If I remember, it was Him of Praise who knocked Killeshin out of contention in Earth Summit’s Grand National. He was stuck in the middle of a fence, mind…..
Dramatist was a proper horse in an age of legends, and Bonum Omen could actually talk (am I the only one who remembers his "interview" prior to the ’82 National?
I’ll also give you bonus points for including Whaat Fettle, who wasn’t the greatest Gordon Richards ever trained but was one of the handsomest.
October 5, 2007 at 12:53 #118089re The Langholm Dyer, I can remember reading an article about him that said he’d lost interest in his racing and it was because his lad/lass had moved away – when they came back and looked after him again he got his form back! I wrote to the Edinburgh Woolen Mill asking about him and their other horses but I think they just wanted to sell me some tartan socks.Does anyone know if Suny Bay is still with us – what a star he was at Aintree over the years. Also a horse called Star Traveller who was leading the field in the National one year [ridden by Jamie Osborne I think] and was pulled up on the second circuit, never heard any more about him.

October 5, 2007 at 16:59 #118120My favourite and i’m not sure how many will remember him – it’s a horse called Lefrak City.
He was a tiny little former point to pointer trained by Capt Tim Forster. I looked after him when he won the Tingle Creek. A legend !He was a fabulous little thing! Flashy chestnut pocket rocket with loads of white; attacked his fences as if they’d personally affronted him.
Some of my favourites:
Spartan Missile – the all-time greatest hunter chaser IMO
Dawn Run, if only for her Gold Cup win (I fill up every time I hear Peter O’Sullivan’s commentary; "the mare’s beginning to get up…")
Run and Skip – a slightly bigger, bay version of Lefrak City!
Floyd – I was there when he won the Fighting Fifth. Not quite a superstar, but he had guts
Viking Flagship
Desert Orchid
RelkeelAnd many others too numerous to list.
October 5, 2007 at 17:44 #118129Rory, I’m not sure Killeshin was stuck in the fence or just seemed like it as he was jumping it so slowly, they’d only gone 4 miles so he hadn’t even got warmed up yet! Luckily Sean Curran was able to catch him and pick up 6th place money. It was a real hard luck story in the race, even from his impossible position I could imagine him taking off down the run in and snatching a place.
Poor Him of Praise looked tiny in the race and seemed to be taking off almost vertically to get over the fences and landing vertically on the other side I’m suprised he consented going that far before refusing.October 5, 2007 at 17:47 #118131mine (for personal reasons) is a point to pointer called tartevie as a kid i walk 8-10 miles to alnwick point to point races and put my pocket money on it every time it ran, i first saw it when it came in to the paddock and stopped directly in front of me (above me actually) and just stared at me……..it was love at first sight………..yuk, chipmunk
cant believe no-one has mentioned CRISP!!!!October 5, 2007 at 18:05 #118134I forgot to mention Suny Bay and Strong Flow!
Suny Bay was a sort of Dessie to me, quite similar and within memory.October 5, 2007 at 23:47 #118162No. 1 has to be ARKLE for me. CAPTAIN CHRISTY, brilliant on his day, is my No. 2. His 1975 King George was a race to remember.
October 6, 2007 at 11:36 #118212Master Oats. Spent six months telling anyone who’d listen that he was nailed on for the ’95 Gold cup.
October 6, 2007 at 13:37 #118223er.. Monksfield – game as a pebble
Flyingbolt – Irish National under 12:4. Champion Chase at a canter and third in the next day’s Champion Hurdle.
Arkle – best ever, no question
Rag Trade – my first winning bet!
Kauto Star – because he makes your heart beat faster
Hardy Eustace – for three consecutive festival wins
October 7, 2007 at 08:07 #118296Welcome, Monksfield, even if you are totally wrong in your opinion of the Pridwell ride!!!!

October 7, 2007 at 08:38 #118297My favourite horse was Lefrak City. He was a tiny little ex pointer to pointer who looked like The Minstrel with four white socks and white face.
He was the fastest thing on Captain Forsters gallops but was very moderate over hurdles.
But it was a different case over fences winning the Tingle Creek and numerous other chases.
Not the best around but fantastic to watch!October 7, 2007 at 13:27 #118316Welcome, Monksfield, even if you are totally wrong in your opinion of the Pridwell ride!!!!
Colin
Thanks, Colin.
And no I’m not !
October 8, 2007 at 05:39 #118415If no-one’s mentioned him yet, they should have done…….
