October 13, 2007 at 21:35 #119369Hops And Pops – we saw this one put in a superb front running performance at Ascot and followed her career afterwards.
Yeah, I looked out for her lots during her most productive seasons. She had a vile streak to her as well, though, didn’t she? It might even have been in the Ascot race you mentioned that a kick from her forced the withdrawal of one of her rivals.
She has produced a few foals that have subsequently taken their chances in point-to-points for John Dufosee – Rio Pops (by Broadsword) has proven an adept mare under Ryan Bliss’s control, but younger sibling Double Pops has not, and is described in the current Mackenzie and Harris as, “another horse who is not a good advert for Double Trigger”.

October 13, 2007 at 21:56 #119371My favourite and i’m not sure how many will remember him – it’s a horse called Lefrak City.
He was a tiny little former point to pointer trained by Capt Tim Forster. I looked after him when he won the Tingle Creek. A legend !Yep, I remember him alright, Luke. I particularly remember him contesting a three-runner Wincanton chase back in 1984 when the BBC covered the Boxing Day meeting there – he set off ahead of Kilbrittain Castle and Farranastig, they stayed in that order throughout, and finished at intervals of 30 lengths.
"I don’t know what you see in such a boring sport sometimes", deadpanned my parents. Luckily a thrilling King George VI Chase on the other channel 15 minutes later, again only a three-runner affair but with the width of a ciggie paper splitting Burrough Hill Lad and Combs Ditch at the end of it, helped redress the balance.
Going clockwise seemed to be a prerequisite for Lefrak City, didn’t it? A quick dart through some of his career reveals scores at Hereford, Sandown, Wincanton, Huntingdon and Taunton at 2m-2m3f, so yes, I guess something like the Tingle Creek (which he won in November 1985) was always going to rate as good a contest as he could gun for given his optimum requirements.

Peaty Sandy. If you go to back a certainty always buy a return ticket.
October 21, 2007 at 21:24 #120843The greatest horse ever would have to be Arkle but I was a little too young to appreciate him at the time.
When I first became interested in racing I used to enjoy watching the horses ridden by Andy Turnell. One of the best of these was Tree Tangle who never quite fulfilled his potential as he was if I recall correctly prone to breaking blood vessels and not acting as well at Cheltenham compared to Ascot or Newbury.
In recent times my favourite horse has been Looks Like Trouble. Hugely under-rated due mainly to set of circumstances beyond his control. Had he stayed injury free the Best Mate story may never have started.
Finally, one nobody else probably remembers. Parsons Thorns was the best looking jumper I have ever seen. Unfortunately, he was never able to fulfill his potential as he suffered a fatal injury in a vintage renewal of the Sun Alliance Chase. The Nock’s rated him higher than Senor El Betrutti and Charlie Brooks saw him as a Gold Cup horse.

VodkatiniOctober 22, 2007 at 19:02 #120946I must say that that is an exceptionally fine list of horses ~ clearly a man of discernment.
October 22, 2007 at 19:03 #120947a mostly unimaginitive list:
Desert Orchid (got me into horse racing; charismatic, brave; grey frontrunner)
Best Mate (obviously great yet often an underdog)
Rooster Booster (grey and often unlucky)
Azertyuiop (an awesome presence)
Iris’s Gift (big and grey)
Grey Abbey (grey frontrunner; spectacular jumper)
Well Chief (small; chestnut with a white blaize)
Lord Collingwood (I saw him at Middleham Open Day and he was so endearing!)October 22, 2007 at 20:26 #120955I remember Petite Etoile as a fantastic racemare, one of the best I’ve seen, but she never ran over jumps!
October 22, 2007 at 20:53 #120958Broadsword
the only thing I know about this one was he lost as red-hot favourite in the 1981 Triumph Hurdle to a 66/1 shot trained by a then unheard-of handler named M C Pipe. What did he go on to achieve?

Haha oh dear, even I know that (contrary to what the above suggested!). I went mad for a moment there… I think, I listed so many grey horses that my memory started offering the name of any grey horse to type down rather than grey jumps horses.
October 22, 2007 at 21:17 #120965I’ve just found my tape of Dublin Flyer at Warwick where he cleared a massive 33 ft at one fence – also an old Grand National trial at Haydock with Earth Summit, Into the Red, Him of Praise, Dom Samurai etc etc…

He went on to sire some big slow yaks.
