It’s not really fair of me to comment since there are some I’ve still yet to see. However,I particularly enjoy Hexham. The only thing I’m not too keen on are the hedges, though they do blend in very nicely and set the fences off very nicely too, but they obscure the take off side in some, but not all cases. The same applies to Sandown’s last fence as well. But that’s a personal thing, I like to see horses approach to their fences clearly. The overall panoramic view is excellent and the setting magnificent. The staff are helpful and friendly and the lager louts and ladettes are usually to be found at trendier places.
I also loved Cheltenham. It has a character of it’s own. There is an atmosphere you can feel, it has a presence to savour. If you take your racing seriously then Cheltenham is the mecca of jump racing. The biggest problem with it is the Festival is over crowded and there are a too many of the aforementioned morons there but if you ignore them, as best you can, there is no finer place for four days of the greatest horse show on earth.
November 11, 2008 at 17:36 #189196Gotta agree with davidjohnson – Without doubt the best courses in my opinion are York for Flat and Cheltenham for jumps – I do like Doncaster too which is dual purpose of course.
I have been to about 40 of the 60 and would like to add my appreciation for Bangor-on-Dee a small track and unique in atmosphere. I went for the first time 3 years ago and enjoyed so much i went again last month.
I also like on small track subject Ludlow and Market Rasen. I also enjoyed further afield Musselburgh and Hamilton.
Least favourite has to be Worcester and Wolverhampton. Facilities at latter are pathetic. It should be free to go in which would make it more bearable.
November 11, 2008 at 18:04 #189198I Like going to leopardstown & punchestown but Laytown was my 1st time going to the races when i was a nipper so it always has a special place for me even though its not a proper racetrack, In England i have only been to a handfull of courses, with Cheltenham the winner so far.

Have you been to Bellewstown? My wife and I went there back in 2005 and really enjoyed the atmosphere and the racing there. Viewing isn’t perfect but still a delightful evening’s racing. Finding the place, now that’s a different matter…….

November 11, 2008 at 18:26 #189201Having Rode at every NH course in Brittain appart from 2, im gonna pick in order of luck, size and skill! . Ok lucky for me Uttoxeter, size, best Smallest track Market Rasen, best of the Biggies Cheltenham and to ride at skill wise i always found little Taunton a pain!! Damn that bend was tight it could all be won and lost round there. Lovely Course.
November 11, 2008 at 18:46 #189209without a doubt York at number 1 followed by Ripon, easy the best two in the north.
Cant i say i thought much of Ripon. Pretty in a way but facilities were awful (why the 1970’s colour tvs still?). Prefered Thirsk
I like York a lot but would mark down the access to and from the somewhat downbeat paddock
November 12, 2008 at 15:08 #189348Punchestown is best course i have visited including Flemington,Longchamp, Saint Cloud,Ascot Cheltenham and Aintree.
Very good track and all Facilities that are needed to enjoy a days racing. Also the racing can be seen from anywhere on the course.November 12, 2008 at 17:13 #189374Lingfield

All it needs is a replacement Frankie’s bar selling thick warm soup in a polystyrene cup and a bread roll with butter and perfection of the AW winter course will be returned
Kempton is a close second, Southwell third, Plumpton is okay for the food, Sandown, Ascot, both Newmarkets and Epsom are okay for the racing, as is Windsor, Wolves just needs relocating 200 miles south-east, Great Leighs should be fine when it’s finished, Fontwell’s not bad, Newbury is a tip, Huntingdon should be closed down due to the late abandonments and Worcester just needs stocking with some decent carp to make it useful.

Ha Ha but you did find it yes? a lot of the provincial tracks are like that over here but you will normally just get real racing fans going so will always have a enjoyable time even if not up to proper standards…

November 12, 2008 at 19:16 #189404I’ll say Auteuil.
Free entrance for an 8-race card with bundle of G1’s, free racecard, a table in the panoramic restaurant only costs you the price of the meal, the viewing is great from the stands – where there are loads of seats, there are no queues at the bars, it’s a doddle to get to and from (though the loopy bit on the Metro when you’re leaving can be quite confusing), and – if you’re lucky – you can bump into Noel Chance and ask him if he’s on the lookout for a purchase or just on a jolly ("on a jolly" in case you were wondering).
Everyone should go. No, really – I insist.
November 18, 2008 at 04:01 #190373ascot is very good, you get your moneys worth. But i like sandown, stiff fences, competitive.
