One caught my eye in yesterdays Racing Post from jockey Richie McLernon’s contribution to The Monday Jury in which he said regards The Young Master – "He’s been very well placed – his trainer Neil Mulholland will be best placed to know which target to aim at".
December 23, 2014 at 11:04 #499312Hard to improve on this from John Butler, one time assistant to Barney Curley after his horse had landed the fourth leg of this years major coup:
"It is all speculation," he said. "It is three years since I was with Barney, who was good to me at the time, but we have gone our own ways. When I woke up this morning and looked at his price, I couldn’t believe it – it was a ridiculous price. I don’t know about betting. The horse was entitled to win."

Brett:- Hey Clint, this horse has the same running style as you.
Clint:- How’s that ?
Brett (reading):- "comes home late".

, we train the horses, we’re not into the betting or following the betting…"
December 23, 2014 at 13:21 #499317Apologies that this isn’t a recent one, but I couldn’t resist giving it an airing.
I loved the dry wit of dear old Clement Freud, horse owner and racing enthusiast, who once commented…
"Owning a racehorse is probably the most expensive way of getting on to a racecourse for nothing"
December 23, 2014 at 23:41 #499367Simon Clare Head PR Director Corals
"The reality is that over 99 per cent of all bets offered up in our shops on horseracing are laid as requested," said Clare.
"We take roughly 1.5 million bets on horseracing a week and receive around 2,000 calls per week from shops for racing bets that need approval from the traders, the majority of which are laid."December 24, 2014 at 09:10 #499381Nathan Hughes before the race on Toronado and the history of the Queen Anne Royal Ascot.

Following in a good tradition on the HKJC programme. This from Trackside ten years ago.
‘Gavan, this horse reminds me of one of your girlfriends’
‘Why ?’
‘It hangs out on corners’
December 24, 2014 at 12:59 #499398Mine isn’t from this year either but it’s one of the most original I heard in a betting shop.
This one comes from the legendary Wick punter, the, sadly, late Kevin Howden, who died all too young.
It goes back to the time when night racing was in its infancy and new ideas were being mooted to keep punters in the shop until the night meetings started.
One such project was broadcasting the live European football fixture where Glasgow Rangers were involved. It turned out only a handful of lads were watching it and, in observation, regular punter Gordon piped up that I’d have gotten a bigger crowd if a blue movie were showing instead.
Die hard Celtic fan Kevin quickly retorted:-
"Gordon, this
is
a blue movie, because you are just about to see somebody get F***ed"
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 24, 2014 at 18:32 #499420From Mark Johnston some time ago, after a debut victory: ‘We just need to take one step at a time up the ladder, and keep our feet on the ground.’
December 24, 2014 at 20:17 #499424X needed the run and will come on for it said by X
