YOUNG Spartacus, winner of the 2001 Racing Post Chase and the 2003 Mildmay Of Flete at the Cheltenham Festival, has died at the age of 15.

A winner of five hurdle races and five chases in a 28-race career, Young Spartacus had been enjoying retirement with his owner-breeder Bert Hellyer.

Hellyer said on Thursday: "He had a happy retirement – he was a keen hunter and schoolmaster and was being ridden out by my niece this morning when he had a heart attack."

Young Spartacus’s biggest win over hurdles came in the Tote Silver Trophy at Chepstow when warming up for his second season over fences which went on to yield wins in the Ladbroke Trophy at Cheltenham and the Racing Post Chase in which he beat Triumph Hurdle winner and subsequent Gold Cup second Commanche Court.

His trainer Henry Daly said: "He was very tough, shown by coming back from a year and a half off with a leg to win the Mildmay Of Flete on his first run.

"He gave his owner breeder some great days which they enjoyed to the full. It was quite an achievement for a small breeder to produce a horse to win such big races."

Yes, a very tough, smart horse.

Sounds like he was having a wonderful retirement.

Condolences to everyone associated with the horse during his life.

If there is a "right" way to go, then this must be very close to it. I can only echo the sentiments above that it’s great he was able to enjoy his dotage in the way he did.

    Rest easy, Young Spartacus.
