Yes Lingfield, alas you are correct, the breeding industry is geared around the 10 furlong horse. Wrongly so IMO.
September 9, 2006 at 18:52 #76741Maybe Trackside, but JN has bought SI along carefully this year and he didnt exactly have a hard race
Also the mark of a fine trainer that the stables "form" seemingly didnt affect SI’s chances at all
September 9, 2006 at 19:12 #76742Showed a real good turn of foot – whether could replicate it in a race like The Arc is a different question.
September 9, 2006 at 19:32 #76743Can certainly see him running a place…looks the type
Troiuble is I have a real aversion to EW betting but may look at that
could also be that price because hes not really expected to run….
September 19, 2006 at 08:47 #76271
As a footnote to this thread, in the update this morning the official handicapper has raised Youmzain to a mark of 117 folowing his second in the Prix Niel.
That’s exactly the same mark he awarded Sixties Icon after the St Leger.
I don’t expect too many will agree with that assessment, but it counts for a lot in terms of their future stud value if they end up equal on the International Classification.
Btw Trackside, if he’s another Warrsan, he’ll do more than ‘nick a Group 1 in Germany or Italy’ won’t he?

September 19, 2006 at 16:22 #76272But why is the owner in racing, AP? He’s a very wealthy man. Normal commercial considerations don’t always apply to these people. I’ve no problem with the rating which suggests that Youmzain would have at the very least given Sixties Icon a race in the Leger and might well – given the likelihood of improvement for the step up in trip – have beaten him. What would give you more enjoyment as an owner: your horse drawing clear with another up the York straight in a classic with a big crowd roaring them on or second place, comfortably held by the winner (if truth be told), at a virtually deserted Longchamp in a Group 2 that is regarded as nothing more than a trial for another event? Obviously, if Youmzain goes on to win the Arc he’s a stallion prospect but that’s not very likely to happen.

He might nick a Group 1 over 12 in Germany or Italy, but whether that is more attractive to potential breeders I don’t have a clue… sort of reminds me of Warrsan in the making…
Connections state he goes for the Pries von Europa in Cologne on Sunday but they are unlikely to pay £60k to supplement him for the Arc. Meanwhile Sixties Icon WILL be supplemented

September 19, 2006 at 20:00 #76274
Gus,
If I ever had the good fortune to own a horse that good, he certainly wouldn’t run in the Leger.
But that’s only because he wouldn’t have run in the Voltigeur or any other Group race either, in order to keep his handicap mark down for next year’s Ebor!
They can always go for group races as a 5-y-old ……
One possible reason why he passed on the Leger that we didn’t consider at the time – perhaps he had an interest in one of the other runners? Not every part owner gets named in the paper, or he might have already agreed to buy one for stud after the race. Wheels within wheels ……. we just don’t know do we?

September 24, 2006 at 20:17 #76275Credit to Youmzain and his owner as the horse won the aforesaid Group 1 in Germany today. I still think he should have gone for the Leger, though.
September 24, 2006 at 20:36 #76276I also maintain it should have gone for the Leger.
Picked up its German group 1 today though beating Egerton and Enforcer is hardly vintage stuff.
Where will it be placed next?
September 24, 2006 at 22:06 #76277I’m fairly sure he’ll go for the Woodbine International, or possibly the BC Turf.
September 25, 2006 at 05:45 #76278This horse has been very well placed by his owner, seem to remember when he won at York Channon wanted to go for a far lesser race a few days before.
I would take a second in The Niel and a win in a German G1 anyday rather than the unknown of The Leger. Just shows trainer doesn’t always know best. Not bad for a 30 grand yearling.
September 25, 2006 at 07:23 #76279I’m surprised at a Gold Cup winner expressing such sentiments, Mr Yeats!
The St Leger prize was four times greater than the €100,000 Youmzain picked up yesterday over a trip that seemed barely sufficient for him. It took Fallon at his best to get him up close home.
Would winning the Leger really have been the kiss of death? Do you think Scorpion’s stud career is over before it starts?
In fact to Sha Tin in Hong Kong or Milan in Italy next apparently
