    …because

    real

jumps afficionados (oh alright, me and Neil Watson and one or two other nutters) will tell you that the only race worth a pitcher of warm spit today is the four mile handicap chase at Hexham. 8)

We love this contest to the point of delirium –

    2005 Gimme Shelter
    S J Marshall / Michael McAlister

    2003 Gimme Shelter
    S J Marshall / Padge Whelan

I’m certainly a nutter deliriously in love with that ponderous old girl.
    7.32 2005
    9/2 2003
Meanwhile the usual gun barrel staring at Cheltenham

Find it difficult to oppose Overlady today but want 3.75 about her (missed it earlier)

I was at Hexham the day The Thinker won the Gold Cup just after a delay due to a snow storm. Arthur Stephenson was at Hexham as well and got a huge, heartfelt round of applause.

Wish I’d ignored Cheltenham and concentrated on Huntington instead. Thought Gina Andrews would be too good for the other ladies in the first but did I back her? Did I heck….

I couldn’t believe they were all within a few lengths with 4 fences to go. Obviously all must have been trained to peak fitness for this, what with the fast pace to be expected. . .

I watched it on a 2" by 1.5" box on my PC, what with only having a mobile connection, rather than broadband.

A winning start for my new interest. I know the thread says Dry Run, but the only way to know whether I could have got 9/1 or more is to suck it and see.

It pays for the other Hexham bets anyway.

It was nice that they provided slow motion of the closing stages without having to revert to a replay! They all plodded at their own pace from the bottom of the hill.

I think the weight told for Overlady particularly up in distance, and she will be better off in a higher class with less weight.

You know GC i was thinking about going to that raceday today but due to not having a lot of holidays this year due to our pathetic mangement who seem to not want you to have a day off ment i could not.

Great to see Bellaney Jewel win as she loves the ground and has won over the trip before at Kelso in the Borders Nat.

Deserves a crack at the Scottish Nat next but the owners will be tempted with getting her covered by a top quality staying stallion.

Regarding tomorrows alternative big race i think Joe Jo Star will walk in with the Fakenham Silver Cup.

    Jeremy,

That last name, Rubika, brings back a few memories as I had a horse in training with Stan Mellor at that time.

Do you know Rubika’s claim to fame in NH racing?

The rider, Mr D (for Denis) Gray was quite a character too – a tanned NZ sheep farmer who came over after New Year every season at that time to ride for Stan in hunter chases. He was as good as most pros, but because he was unknown over here, you could get top prices when he rode. He was on board Kings Curate in an Ascot handicap two months before that horse won the Stayers Hurdle and was available on course at 10/1.

Unfortunately Dennis Gray, who had a great record in his native NZ, became a para, after a fall that broke his back some years ago in NZ.

Hope the price wasn’t too skinny Jeremy. Daren’t back him myself but pleased with that. Fear the worse from the handicapper given chance are we didn’t actually improve there.

    David,

Well done, nice piece of placing in a modest contest for the money.

Newbury next Friday under a penalty ?

Yet another win during Cheltenham week for Gina Andrews – on her father’s Dellover at Fakenham today. She is the female equivalent of Rhys Flint and should never be underestimate. Just wish I’d spent money backing there instead of Cheltenham.

…and in winning form again at Fakenham yesterday, of course, on something that’s spent the last two years on the sidelines.

For a 17 year-old who’d barely had a race-ride in public this time last year, I think Gina’s got quite a future ahead of her.

Yep, I had a small tickle first thin yesterday morning before he was mown into odds on. :)

I share your concern about the assessor’s (over)reaction hereafter, though – compared to previous renewals of Fakenham’s premier handicap hurdle of the season, this really was a bit on the weak side, and he could get stuffed up 10lb or more for having beaten two thirds of sod all.

You should have bought back Saif Sareea beforehand and tried to land a one-two in the race. Hell, even Big Brown would have beaten most of the remainder! 8)

…and like Rhys Flint this time last year, she represents value as a level stakes blind backing propostion as the wider public haven’t cottoned on to her yet.

    FLAT 1-3 (+ 2.00)
    NH 3-10 (+ 20.50)

I’m already looking forward to seeing what she might get the leg up on in the big ladies’ hunter chase at Stratford on Horse & Hound evening.

I know Big Brown handled Churchill Downs well, Jeremy, but I’d have some doubt about him giving his running around Fakenham’s tight turns.

Did I say Big Brown? I meant Big Bradford.

My mental deterioration continues apace.

It was nice to get our revenge on Bedizen, as it was the same owners Dheddah that got the better of Saif Sareea (pair 21l clear) in the same race 3 years ago.

Big Bradford, yes I’m sure he’s the type that would have loved hurdling!

Thanks Alan, we’ll wait and see what the handicapper does but I think there’s a good chance his days of winning over hurdles are now over. We may have a day out at Aintree or possibly the Swinton but he won’t be well enough handicapped to win either whereas he is well treated I think still on the Flat so we’ll be going back down that route before too long.
