My selections for York this week with reasoning.
Day 1- Wednesday
2.00 William Birch & Sons Construction Stakes (Handicap)
[b:53gtutkm]New Planet 14/1[/color:53gtutkm][/b:53gtutkm] 2.5pt Each WayIf he can win today then he can boost the form of Mayson’s Newmarket win in April. He has every chance of doing so as well.
He is a lightly raced sprinter who has ran very well in both starts this term, winning at Warwick and then was not disgraced behind Mayson last time out. He was only beaten five lengths and that rival is now just about favourite for the Duke Of York Stakes on the same card.
He is returned to handicaps for the first time this year and this is his lowest mark and despite never winning a handicap he looks as if he has a big chance of winning this one. He was only beaten just over two lengths off a mark of 105 in identical conditions over course and distance almost a year ago. He is 5lbs lower today and being lightly raced, has to be in with a massive chance and is overpriced at 14/1.
3.00 Duke Of York Totepool Stakes Group 2
[b:53gtutkm]Mayson 9/2[/color:53gtutkm][/b:53gtutkm] 10pt WinSome sprinters often have a frustrating three year old campaign and then spring to life as a four year old. That seems to be the case with MAYSON who has improved massively this season and looks as if he has more to come.
After his first run as a four year old when he finished a creditable third he finally showed the ability he has when he had race fitness on his side when winning at Newmarket over 6f. The turn of foot off a slow pace he showed that day was incredible.
He then beat Definightly over the minimum trip and should have the beating of him again over a more suitable 6f, especially with the ground against Definightly.
Hoof It is worth a mention and brings excellent form to the table but has came up short both times at Group level. He is still considered a dangerous rival and should make a bold bid.
MAYSON could still have more to come and I wouldn’t be surprised if he improved again in this race.
4.45 McArthurglen’s York Designer Outlet Stakes (Handicap)
[b:53gtutkm]Deepsand 20/1[/color:53gtutkm][/b:53gtutkm] 1.25pt Each WayAn open race but DEEPSAND has been running very well since switched to handicaps and his last run can be excused as it was over an inadequate distance. Prior to that he had ran five times over distances varying from 6 to 7f and was never beaten more than one and a quarter lengths and was only unplaced on one occasion.
He won off a mark of 75 at Ayr and ran very well 78 over 6 furlongs at York in a twenty runner field. He was then narrowly beaten off 79 at Doncaster.
He is now back down to 78 a mark which he was very close off at this track as a two year old but should be a lot better as a three year old.
Based on his performances of last year he should be capable of winning or getting in the places off marks such as 78 and it would be no surprise if he was winning off higher marks later on in the season. Today’s race is tough but providing nothing goes wrong for him, he has ideal conditions and should get a place at the least.
