December 16, 2008 at 19:39 #1973581. Fairytale of New York
2. Do They Know it’s Christmas
3. Little Drummer Boy – Bing Crosby & David Bowie (I know it’s a cover)Lee
December 16, 2008 at 21:35 #197400I would concur with Grasshopper’s 3 songs, although I have Greg Lake’s ditty rated about 2lbs ahead of The Pogues et al.
December 16, 2008 at 21:37 #197404I also like Benny Hill’s "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)" – Christmas No.1 in 1971
I also rate Mr Blobby ahead of all past, present, & future X-Factor winners!

3. I wish it could be Christmas everyday – WizzardDecember 16, 2008 at 22:09 #197432I fear I must be alone in my hatred of the Pogues tune.
I can honestly say if I could choose a song to be erased from history so I could never hear it again, it would be this.
To quote a line from the one of the greatest sitcoms of all time; "I would rather have a pineapple violently inserted into my rectum" (than listen to it)…
Sorry guys – had to get that off my chest!
December 16, 2008 at 22:44 #197444I fear I must be alone in my hatred of the Pogues tune.
“Hatred” would be too strong, but I’m also not very keen on it at all, to be truthful. I don’t think it represents the Pogues at their best, and it sure as hell doesn’t Kirsty MacColl. I can at least reconcile myself to the not insignificant fact that the ongoing download sales of Fairytale… continue to swell the coffers of the Justice for Kirsty Campaign, though. Good.
As for my favourite three Winterval songs, I give you;

December 17, 2008 at 01:16 #1975001) A Christmas Carol (Tom Lehrer)
2) Fairytale Of New York (Kirsty and Pogues)
3) Stop The Cavalry (Jona Lewie)
Three very different takes on the Christmas theme, but it seems like all are still relevant today.
December 17, 2008 at 03:37 #197548I can’t believe for the life of me nobody’s mentioned The Pretenders ‘2000 miles’
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=30kXXTdmGCo This is a beautiful version.
It’s the only xmas track I can listen to out of season without wanting to kill myself.Well done The Young Fella for revealing Stop The Cavalry by Jona Lewie as the name escaped me.

Glad too see somone else appreciates Tom Lehrer’s wry observations on Christmas. I listened to some of his stuff on youtube yesterday and so much of his acerbic observations are spot on to this day.

3. Christmas Carol – Tom Lehrerwith an honourable mention for
