Advance congratulations to Xavier Aizpuru who leads the American Steeplechase jockeys championship by 5 wins(he has 20) from Paddy Young (ex Henrietta Knight) who is one in front of Carl Rafter and Chris McCarron’s nephew Matt with only 1 days racing remaining when the Colonial Cup is contested.
It’s great to see that these 3 riders plus James Slater who has 9 wins for the year have done so well in the US

Nice to hear he’s doing well for himself. Wondered what had happened to him.

November 6, 2007 at 20:17 #123279Xavier Aizpuru – a high-scoring Scrabble word made flesh.

November 6, 2007 at 22:38 #123315Would love to see more of the american jump racing on ATR or channel 433.
November 6, 2007 at 22:46 #123317I’d rather see some of the big races from Auteuil and other French jump tracks myself.
November 6, 2007 at 22:46 #123318why don’t we get horses coming over to run in the National like we used to? the last one I can remember was Uncle Merlin, and Von Csadeck[?]came over and was trained by Henrietta Knight but I don’t think he ever ran here….
November 7, 2007 at 00:09 #123325The Racing Post site lists four UK runs for Von Casdek, and yes, he was indeed trained by Henrietta Knight for these (before returning to the care of Douglas G Worrall).
He won his first two, a 3m2f Uttoxeter handicap chase (good) in October 1990 and a 3m5f Worcester handicap chase a month later (good), improving his OR from 128 to 147 in so doing, before finishing midfield in the Hennessy and second in a four-runner renewal of the Mandarin Chase (good to firm, good respectively) before the year was out.
He certainly shaped like a probable stayer of extreme distances, but at this remove I can’t remember why he didn’t run again in the UK after the Mandarin appearance – training setback?

November 7, 2007 at 00:14 #123327Is the season run over a fortnight?
November 7, 2007 at 21:59 #123516Remember Xavier used to help out at the Duke’s back in the old Condicote days and have some old photos of him leading round in the parades as a wee lad
November 7, 2007 at 22:24 #123527Davidbrady, according to the Internation Federation of Horseracing Authorities site, there was a total of only 177 jump races run in America last year.
This compares with 51000+ flat races and 53000+ harness races.

Strewth!
Imagine a jockey’s agent, "You’re in for a busy time this month mate as I’ve got you a full book of rides. You’re riding on the 4th, the 21st and the 30th"

November 7, 2007 at 22:57 #123534177 is not many, but there’s worse – I don’t think the total number of jumps races even reaches three figures in Germany. A shame; I’d love to move to Berlin or Hamburg at some point in life, but losing such ready, abundant access to the winter code is most offputting.

November 7, 2007 at 23:13 #123538Yes, only 60 jump races run in Germany last year, so not too much action there.
Here is a one-page summary of total jump races run, by country, from the same site. These figures are for 2005.
November 8, 2007 at 09:21 #123570Last time I saw Xavier Aizpuru in this country, he was buzzing around the midfield for Bourton Rovers in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League.
November 8, 2007 at 09:34 #123573Are there still jump races held at Belmont Park?
I remember seeing the fences while watching the BC meeting in the past but have never seen them in use.
Have seen a few races on satellite TV from Pau in France. I remember seeing Pak Jack running there before his transfer to UK and placings in National and Aintree Foxhunters.

31/12/07 NEUSS 3600m hurdleWell, that’s a list of 80, actually, but by the end of the year arund 20 of those will have been called off on account of either the weather or, more commonly, no runners declared. That’s right – essentially 25% of the jumping calendar not fulfilled over there due to lack of uptake.
I got these dates off the Galopp-sport.de website (the official racing board over there, I think), and one interesting feature of the races is that any horse that has already been entered in a race displays against that race in the database. If any interested UK trainers are tuning in, they may like to know that there’s 12 horses entered for the hurdle at Neuss next weekend, but only one and three respectively for the two chases at Bremen. All three of those races offer a win pot of just 2,600 Euros, though.
An interesting way to bring up me 2000 posts, I think! Now that I’ve got a fuller idea of how the jumps calendar stacks up over there after doing this exercise, I can think of making a sortie or two across to catch some action. Hmm, all-weather chase next October, anyone?
