Lochsong July Cup 1994
Although not historically as strong over 6f, she’d been superb in her past few races and was regularly staying on over the minimum.
Morning tissue price was a shade above evens IIRC and having decided I would have my biggest ever bet on her I rushed out of work with just enough time to spare, sprinted to the nearest bookies, ran to the counter and placed my bet.
I turned around, looked at the screen and was astonished to see that she was trading at c. 3/1.
I mentioned to the stranger next to me what an amazing price she was.
Onyl for him to tell me that minutes before, during my mad dash, she’d broke free going down to the start and had pretty much already run her race.
I needn’t have bothered watching the race but desperate to blame anybody but myself I’m still amazed they let her take her chance.
For anybody who hasn’t seen it, arguably the best sprinter we’d seen since Dayjur finished with just one behind her

January 22, 2012 at 23:03 #387888money wise probably authorized in the arc. this horse doesn’t seem to get that much of a mention, which is a shame.

Are you sure this was July Cup…as my worst bet ever was same horse same year in the Nunthorpe, though at time of placing my bet wasn’t in my opinion worst ever bet struck…reason why explained later!!!! Can other members confirm if I am right around year or am I mixing 2 events together?
I was 18 years old, just got my A level results that day and picked up my weekly wages for evening job in cash after doing a number of extra shifts (Paid £3.20 an hour!!!!) Had £200 in my pocket (Wages plus a bit more) and had gone to the racecourse into Tatts as I lived in York. Had £100 at 10/11 I think first show and then she (Lochsong)bolted to start. Thought bound to be withdrawn but she wasn’t and as they say the rest is history!!!!
To make things worse, and to link onto another thread, also then had £40 on foxhound in a later race after ringing up a tipping line (TRT) and this also came nowhere. Got back to parents home that night with around £3 of £200 I had left in my pocket….ouch!!!!

January 23, 2012 at 13:50 #387943Nope, I think you’re right YorkieDips and it’s me that is confusing the two memories (too many beers between then and now)but I got my fingers burnt on both races.
Lochsong was one of those strange horses for me in that as prolific as she was I don’t ever remember catching her on a winning day.
Same goes for Kauto Star actually, with the exception of one King George.

January 24, 2012 at 13:24 #388057Most careless bet that is still sore :
GRAND CRUS – for the bl&&dy JEWSON !!
Wizzed down Oddschecker and i saw 6s (when it was generally best price 5s for the RSA pre xmas), quick as a flash I clicked on and couldnt get the dosh on fast enough.
Now, after realising my error I piled in at 5s for the RSA on xmas eve and after it bolted up in the Feltham I was feeling a lot better.
Surely no one else can have backed a horse in two races at the Fetsival and end up with it running in another !!??
January 24, 2012 at 13:48 #388066I have!
I can also raise you 3 races – Quantitaveeasing.
It won 2 novice hurdles on the steel and I was convinced it was the second coming. So I backed it for the Supreme. Then, Jonjo was giving it the old ‘other possible targets’ spiel – So i backed it for the Neptune too. I got something like 8s for the Supreme, and 10s for the Neptune, so I was still pretty happy thinking that I’ve got it at around 9/2 to win either race.
Then the sodding thing blew out in its next race and ended up going for the Coral Cup. Stubbornly, and not wanting to miss out IF it did win, I threw a tenner on it each way. To add insult to injury it finished 5th.
I’ve never backed it since, and I backed Medermit LTO. The horse is cursed for me!
January 24, 2012 at 18:49 #388096For me it has to be Harchibald in the 2005 Champion Hurdle. It was my big antepost bet of that festival – actually it was my biggest AP bet of all the festivals I’ve attended.
I remember it so well – he cruises up between Hardy Eustace and Brace Inca, over the last, and Carberry waits…. and waits…. still cruising…. not passed HE yet… still cruising… Carberry still waits… then… "OH-****-HARDY-EUSTACE-ISNT-GIVING-UP-SO-TIME-TO-PULL-THE-TRIGGER-ON-HARCHI". Yet he found nothing once asked to kick on and the gutsy Hardy Eustace battled on to win.
Broke my heart, well, my wallet actually. Although I always have a good laugh about it now with my mates – it’s one of those festival moments we always bring up every time Cheltenham comes around.
January 24, 2012 at 19:25 #388105Ekbalco for the Champion Hurdle was defintely one of mines . I was mustard keen on Gay Brief at 12/1 AP and was going to back him AP the next day. I had gone to dinner with a well known jockey of the times who asked me" You’re very keen on this Gay Brief’s chances aren’t you?" Yes says me.""Well Jonjo really fancies Ekbalco and thinks he’ll win " I went home and the next day had 5k at 7/2 on Ekbalco. The bet with Hills did get a mention on the back page of the Sporting Life but it was poor substitute for the 60k I lost because I thought a jockey knew better than I did.

Syrian
for the 2000gns was a major embarrassment and that was after someone who should know better telling me he was a serious horse!

Kildimo
with his long back cost me dear in a Gold Cup and
Coulton
being a Champion hurdler are 2 more who spring to mind.
January 25, 2012 at 11:37 #388186Not too many on the horses front but have deffo learnt my lesson with football bets!!
Now I never back the short priced ones as all the value has gone and merely look for away teams scoring well, there is amazing value.
Worst bet for me was not my fault LOL it was McCoys!!
Backed See More Business in the weeks up to the Gold Cup from 25s down to 16s EW, he was an EW steal and Mr Nicholls (new kid on the block then) was confident of a very good run! He was swinging on the bit and jumping beautifully until a certain Champion Jockey decided to totally take him out when he pulled his horse up! He said he shouted he was going to do it but no other jockey heard this!! Sadly cost me a good few grand which was a lot in those days and See More went on to win the Gold Cup but not at the prices we all had
