Been putting bits on D.Villa for a while now.
Best team, attacking team, most active goalscorer, takes pens and freeuns and basically loves it. Can’t wait

I Love it when Big Bucks agrees with me!
Sorry Halfway, for confusing you with Nathan!

May 24, 2010 at 20:41 #296759Good to see a few more posts re the WC.
Ivory Coast
One team who has been written off by the majority of pundits is Ivory Coast. The main reason for this is that they have been drawn in the same group as Brazil and Portugal and most people can’t see past those 2 teams. However, while Brazil are almost 100% guaranteed a place in the 2nd round, Portugal are most definitely not. Struggled through qualifying (just got 2nd in group and then arguably drew the weakest team in the playoffs) I think they are very very beatable.
One statistic from all the World Cups to-date is that they have all been won by either a team from that continent or Brazil (1958, 1994, & 2002)
With all that in mind I can see the Ivory Coast doing a job on Portugal in their opener and finishing 2nd in this group.
With North Korea in their group it may also be worth having a look at a couple of Ivorians in the top scorer market.
And in terms of top scorers and Ivorians there is only one place to start and that’s Didier Drogba. Top scorer in this season’s Premier League, Drogba also has a phenomenal international record with 43 goals in 66 caps. At 33/1 (each way 1,2,3,4,5 with SkyBet) Drogba is well worth a bet IMO.
Another Ivorian who plays at Stamford Bridge is Saloman Kalou. Not renowned for his scoring prowess at Chelsea (despite a hat-trick on the last day of the season against Wigan), his record for Ivory Coast is a bit better however with 11 goals in 27 matches and at 320 on Betfair, he could be worth a couple of throwaway pounds/euros.
May 24, 2010 at 21:18 #296763These are the domestic league stats for the previous season for Golden Boot winners:-
League Appearances-Goals
26-25 Klose
10-7 Ronaldo
29-10 Suker
47-23 Salenko
30-38 Stoichkov
30-15 Schillaci
41-30 Linekar
*3-1 Rossi
34-28 Kempes
? Lato
33-38 Muller* 3 year ban for match-fixing reduced to 12 months.
Don’t have any figures for Lato for 1973-74, but he was the league topscorer in 1972-73.
Suker had scored 24 goals in the season before this one.
May 27, 2010 at 22:06 #297200Had a very rare bad day at work on Tuesday, and I’ve also done a lot of sleeping the past couple of days, so there was a bit of a hiatus.
Figures are domestic league appearances, 2009-10, and domestic league goals.

May 28, 2010 at 14:55 #297314Good work there Gerald. Have you come across Oscar Cardozo yet? I’m starting to worry about his well-being in the squad.

May 28, 2010 at 15:09 #297315I’m not doing anything special, just looking them up on Wikipaedia, Nathan. Every player so far has a page.
Cardozo born 20 May 1983, so he’s 27. 28 League games for Benfica last season, and 26 league goals.
What I haven’t been doing is checking whether they are in the squads, either provisional or official.
130 looks good. Have just chucked a tenner at it myself. With those number of goals for Benfica surely he must be playing, unless injured?
May 28, 2010 at 15:23 #297320He was named in the provisional but wasn’t included in the squad for the friendly with Ireland the other day. Don’t know when the cut is for the final squad but Paraguay still have two warm up matches to play. If the manager rates Santa Cruz better than this guy he must be a lunatic.

May 28, 2010 at 17:00 #297326Okay, this is the final batch. Have done all 106 in the betfair market. Presumably there’ll be a few changes to the market next week, after the squads are announced.

There’s a few here that I’ll have a second look at.
May 28, 2010 at 17:19 #297329Continuing the Paraguay topic, Lucas Barrios is ex-Argentine, and obtained Paraguayan citizenship in March, and scored recently against Ireland, on his international debut.
May 28, 2010 at 23:59 #297360Cardozo was exceptional for Benfica all season long. It was just a shame he missed some crucial chances against Liverpool in the first leg of the Europa League tie, and even in that game he scored two penalties. Everything Benfica did relied upon him. He’s too good to be staying there imo.
And how can anyone mark Diego Milito down as too old after the Champions League final? We’re dealing with humans, not a Prix De l’Arc De Triomphe where a 3yo will win almost every year.
