Make your mind up because I am getting worried with the amount of votes TAPK has got, I’ll quit if he wins.

If you don’t want TAPK to win, don’t give people a reason to vote for him
December 14, 2010 at 17:02 #332593cant honestly believe what I am reading on the RACING FORUM!! Of COURSE we must vote for AP. The man is a legend and will be remembered for eternity as one. Up there with Piggot and Sir Gordon.
ONEEYE you should be ashamed of yourself. Clearly not a racing man so why are you on this forum? Graeme McDowell??!! For winning one tournament? He didnt even win the money list? Mind boggling.
If those of us that follow racing wont vote for him he has absolutely no chance. Sad.

December 14, 2010 at 20:41 #332619Nope – mainly because I have a financial interest. One of the Graham’s does me quite nicely. McCoy is the wrong price & should be a lay, perhaps backing back when he drifts.
As for this nonsense about "racing fans MUST vote for him for the good of the sport" perhaps someone can tell me the effect of Zara Phillips winning it had on Eventing? More TV Coverage? No! More newspaper coverage? No! More people interested in the sport? I don’t think so!
I’m quite looking forward to the fall out from RFC, Forums etc when / if AP doesn’t win. The doom and gloom is going to be laughable.
December 14, 2010 at 21:16 #332623I won’t vote because win lose or draw A P McCoy is above this sort of thing………..he is a genuine all time great in his sport he doesn’t need long discredited BBC trinkets.
Even more discredited but there is something irresistible about ‘Sir’ Tony McCoy that is worth making a fuss about…..hope he doesn’t have to wait to retire for it.
December 14, 2010 at 21:32 #332625I will be voting for Tony McCoy and really hope he wins as it will tell those idiots in BBC Sport that loathe racing have made an awful mistake cutting back on their coverage of the sport.
December 14, 2010 at 22:18 #332632I shall vote for AP McCoy. I do realise that after being regarded as a reasonably intelligent person for the last few decades I shall instantly become a “retard” (thanks Bluechariot) or a “nerd” (Venusian). I suppose I am beyond the pale in thinking that Ryan Giggs has a personality (fitzer1987), or that Muhammed Ali was a great sports personality and the most brilliant boxer ever despite never having fought against an Australian, Brazilian, Chilean, Dane ….. Zambian (ReasonoverFaith).
Some people on this thread, on both sides of the argument, are treating this much too seriously. It’s a TV programme for goodness sake.
For me it’s just an opportunity to give a bloke a vote for competing in a hard tough sport in such a relentless, determined, never-say-die manner. To me that smacks of great personality. Personality doesn’t always mean speaking charmingly to the public at large, or projecting a civilized outlook on life. Sometimes personality is about being thrown from the top of a half-ton horse into the ground at thirty miles an hour three times in an hour and a half, and then having the guts to get on a horse in the next race and be determined to give it the best ride possible despite the potential pain. That’s personality. I may not like everything the man says or does, but my respect is huge. He is easily the most deserving of the ten candidates.

December 14, 2010 at 22:47 #332643I think Marginal Value has said it all. I will vote for him because he thoroughly deserves to win.

December 14, 2010 at 23:02 #332644I’ve decided that all this ‘we should vote AP because it’ll be good for racing’ talk is a load of old pony.
Andrew Flintoff won SPOTY in 2005 but is that why we remember Flintoff in 2005? Was it Flintoff winning SPOTY that got cricket on the front pages in 2005?
No, it was Flintoff being part of the England team that won the Ashes.
SPOTY is announced on Sunday, forgotten by Tuesday.
However, the NOMINATION is good for racing because it gives us more than a thirty second blip in the programme on the night.
(It’s also funny that people think AP winning will be good for racing & get it in the spotlight but poo poo any idea from RFC to do the same thing.)

A great post.My respect for AP is also on the huge side. We will probably never see his like again. I won’t be too bothered if he doesn’t win, that just means that some people don’t realise how much he deserves to win. It will take nothing away from his great achievements.

Is what you are describing here as personality not more what one would call mentality!!
December 15, 2010 at 12:53 #332692Good points Marginal Value –
I think the distinction that should be made is between the subject’s ‘personality’ as a person and their ‘sporting personality’.
They should perhaps rename it the ‘Sports Achiever of the Year’ award.
btw didn’t Giggs only win because of an orchestrated voting campaign/strategy rather than a genuine public ‘free’ vote?
December 15, 2010 at 17:31 #332756No, neither do I think he is the most deserving of the candidates.
Excluding the personality bit (which is almost mandatory looking at the list) and looking at the achievement bit, he’s been 15 times a champion which is excellent stuff but like F1 drivers the champions tend to be the ones in the best cars or in McCoy’s case on the best horses, as Paul Nicholls is proving, his horses still win while Ruby is out sick as do McCoy’s when he is injured.
It’s not a competition for the best passenger is it?
Phil Taylor’s darts on the other hand are no good in anyone’s hands but his own, they don’t carry him over the oche and into the board and his record or personal achievement is the best of all the candidates.
On top of this, McCoy is the only one getting unlimited free advertising before the event telling people to vote for him.
If he does win, will he be talking to the media about it or will he be throwing another hissy fit and refusing to demonstrate his personality?
December 15, 2010 at 17:37 #332760I surprised how mental the racing press have gone for this.
I saw the SIS thing to promote backing AP in the thing and i for one thought it was cheesey and arrogant. Racing Fans owe AP McCoy nothing the same way he owes Punters nothing. He is a fantastic Jockey and one of the best ever but Grame McDowell has done incredible feats this year and he deserves to win it. He is just a fantastic Golfing hero for the young and the old. The way he reeled in Tiger was magical.
I voting Graeme because he is a good guy and cracking golfer(oh wait i cant vote i am in ROI)

I like the idea of Achiever rather than Personality. I am not sure that most people know the true personality of any of the ten people in this contest. Perhaps only their closest friends and family do. For all we know they might have regular public relations lessons and coaching in how to project an ideal personality to the outside world, despite their temper tantrums, moaning and whining, unkindness to kids and animals, tight-fistedness, and being a general all-round bore. So I just go with what I can see.
I wonder if the Welsh community were a big plus for Giggs, after they had the practice of voting for Joe Calzaghe (what a great boxer he was!). Can anyone orchestrate a win in this contest since the BBC changed the rules to keep the angler out (can’t remember his name)? I would have thought it would be difficult to do it for a footballer because it is such a factional sport – not many Arsenal and Chelsea fans etc would vote for a Manchester United player. Pehaps it was just an organised Welsh vote.
