I’m disappointed. I did use RP quite a bit but there is no way i’m paying £20 a month for the priveledge.
If it did sign up the only part which would be tempting is the basic members club membership for £7.50 a month.
I quite like to look at previous races and read about how the horse ran in its previous races. Its not convenient for me to watch a video of all the runs. It would be the best way but would take far too long. Sometimes I go to the At the Races websites and watch previous runs for free.
I tend to pick the horses myself rather than using the RP verdict but if anyone needs a verdict then the At the Races website is good enough for that and that doesn’t cost a penny.
The Tipping section is a complete joke of a price. £9.50 a month! I think i’d rather spend the tenner on picking the winners myself. I would be tempted if they showed a breakdown of all their tips and it showed that their tips make a nice level stakes profit.
Has anyone here paid up yet? I can see why they have done it and I don’t blame RP. I know I never buy the paper because all the information is available online so it doesn’t make sense to pay £1.60 a day for the rag.
July 8, 2009 at 14:08 #238445Its JOKE , and plainly I believe the response they will get will support that , which makes me believe that some time in the near future access to cards will be chargeable as well
Then the fun will really start
Good luck to all those who pay up
cheers
Ricky
July 8, 2009 at 14:14 #238446i’d rather saw my foot off. just wait until all these people who pay them big money for advertising on the site see the traffic drop, things will change one way or another. less adverts equals bigger subs.
July 8, 2009 at 14:19 #238447I’m laughing at the basic membership money they want. They are trying to tart it up a bit.
"exclusive access to racing post rating"
"The Racing Post’s view of the likely starting price of each runner "
Wowwwww that’s so amazing, they’re charging for something basic that they never used to. However, it’s so much better now that it’s ‘exclusive’.
July 8, 2009 at 15:18 #238457maybe i’m missing something here, but aren’t the RP ratings and spotlights and tips and a few other bits and pieces still free via the william hill site ?
July 8, 2009 at 15:44 #238464It has been a while without RP. I have got to say it is like my girlfriend going on sex strike and prancing around the house in underwear all day. Mixed in with having to give up smoking. Its not fair.
SL and ATR dont go into detail with their results analysis. I have always done my form research on RP and use the quotes and post race analysis on a daily basis.
In a poisitve, you can get racing uk, adn unlimited replays if you go in the £20 a month option. Whats that, 1 bet? I am seriously considering. Apologies for my lack of willpower
I fear by the end of the week Racing Post and I will be on talking terms again…
July 8, 2009 at 15:49 #238466I’ll pay it. Living abroad its worth it for RUK and the unlimited replays. The video quality is good and for what its worth works much better on a Mac.
July 8, 2009 at 16:02 #238469The only thing I use the RP site regularly for is trainer form, clicking on each individual trainers name for the two week record. That is still free.
The form and results stuff I use Timeform, much better analysis anyway. So I won’t be paying for the site.
Think they have shot themselves in the foot with their timing.
With punters having to decide whether to pay almost double for Racing UK, many won’t be able to afford both RUK and RP. Though do understand wanting some payment for a service.

I cant agree with that. I am in that situation and one of the things warming me to RP is the fact that for £20 you can access the site fully, watch UNLIMITED replays and LIVE RUK… all for the same price as getting RUK on tv. It doesnt make sense…is this a bargain??
July 8, 2009 at 16:28 #238480£7.50 month for access to their database is fair value in my book. They are having a laugh for the other so called "features"
July 8, 2009 at 21:14 #238545i use the ratings and speed figures for my points system and previous winners etc.
so tempted to sign up but also think as i only use it for group1 &2 on the flat is it worth it.
i have adjusted my system starting with the july cup and will wait and see.July 8, 2009 at 21:36 #238549I do miss some of the features but am not sure I’ll be paying for what’s been removed yet.
The valid point has been made about the timing with RUK about to possibly start charging again, where I’ve had it free with cable for a couple of years and RUK is definitely worth paying for imo.
The full yearly cost of membership for the RP plus a years RUK adds nearly £400 to the years subs, doubling what I was previously paying on my cable and getting the RP and RUK free.
Not sure they’re both worth that much.
July 8, 2009 at 21:48 #238551If noone on here will pay for it, you’ve got to ask who will?
Personally I would pay- even though I have RI, i’m so used to form study with the RP I’d find it difficult to change. Of course it depends on the cost- as a daily buyer of the paper version I’d object to paying a lot more- wonder if technology exists to give regular purchasers of the newspaper a discount or free access?Agreed I sent an E mail to the RP about being a daily buyer and asked to join the members at £4.95 which was available early on. I received a reply saying that £7.50 was value for money and that there would not be a goodwill concession.

I’ve had four e-mails from the Racing Post today, each detailing the wonder of the Members’ Club, so I can only conclude that they’re desperate.
But you never know, something may enter the market that’s free and comprehensive.
July 8, 2009 at 22:51 #238569At the end of the day the Racing Post is a business, not a charity.
As has been pointed out most of the data on the RP site is freely available elsewhere, albeit spread over several sites.
Customers therefore have a choice.
They can either pay for having the convenience of the data in a single place
or
They can make use of other free sites elsewhere.
Now one presumes the RP has researched the likely take-up and they must presume they will have sufficient take-up to justify the cost of their investment and the price they are charging.
If they do not have sufficient take-up then presumably market forces will come into play and they will either withdraw completely or change their cost model to attract more subscribers, albeit at a lower cost.
Personally I will not be paying for the service as most of what I would use is available elsewhere and the parts that are unique to the RP I can live without.
I am surprised they have not included a ‘pay per view" feature where you can dip in to selected parts of the paid data for a nominal cost per view – in the same way they used to charge for PDF’s.
People understandably complain when something they have used for free is charged for – however instead of complaining of greed they should perhaps be more grateful for what has been provided at no cost to them yet still has had to be paid for by the provider.
July 8, 2009 at 23:31 #238581The RP website has long been one of the best free websites on the internet imo and common sense tells you that it must have started to eat into their newspaper sales.
This was an inevitability about this decision and although you are always going to get plenty of complaints when a new charge is introduced, I think most relatively serious racing fans will end up paying the sub (or will go back to buying the newspaper)

.. I would disagree with that statement. Why would anyone serious about racing use a slow site which has almost every available corner packed with stupid adverts when there are better and more user friendly site elsewhere.
