I’ve explained this before the move but I see the new site has come as a bit of a shock!
So….
We had to change the site because
a) Lots of the old site was written with bespoke code which was now outdated. It referenced various drivers and the like which were now out of date or imminently in danger of going out of date. It was almost ten years old (the code) and re-writing it as a bespoke forum would have been very expensive and would have eventually resulted in the same issues recurring in another few years. You will remember some months ago various crashes occurring, these were being caused by various glitches in the code and were only being got around by us constantly rebooting the forum. It was in imminent danger of collapsing completely and not running at all.
b) We were paying for an expensive hosting package on Amazon. It was required because various parts of the site needed specific items to be present on the host servers. It would be unsustainable for us to continue financing that expensive hosting option.
c) So we decided to come away from the bespoke site and host here on WordPress, allowing us to upgrade and maintain the site in the future without having to resort to having to pay developers large sums to make even the simplest changes (or at least limiting these costs significantly). In addition WordPress is supported on most commercial servers giving us a wide range of options and we’ve secured a very cost-effective package which will ensure the forum can continue to wash its face financially and therefore survive.Leaving it ‘as was’ was not an option for us. We had to make some significant changes and I can promise we’re doing all we can to minimise the disruption.
I know a few things have been ‘lost’ or posts disrupted in the migration – we did all we could to avoid that and, to be honest, I’m chuffed that we managed to maintain 99+% of the content, as you know last week we were afraid we might lose up to 50% of it.
I see that people are keen to get the ‘look’ of the site back to what it was and we’ll work on that over the next few days.
February 27, 2015 at 22:45 #761768Thanks Corm! Patience is obviously required by us all. I see you’ve already improved the headings.
I'd like to live in a place where they cordon off swans...February 27, 2015 at 22:47 #761783It’s early days and we should all be patient. I am sure most people are grateful for the hard work that goes into what is a free service. I am sure you will manage to sort out most of what is getting bad feedback.
I’m not the best with new ways of doing things and haven’t worked out quoting posts and some of the other options yet. Perhaps a brief tutorial might help for the more common options people will be using?
My main worry is why I changed from stevecaution to sweetjebus. I got the password email fine but don’t know what happened to old steve?
Anyway, it was expected there would be difficulties but I am posting away, which is the main thing and it’s much appreciated that the site is firing away, albeit perhaps not on all cylinders yet. Thank you lads.
February 27, 2015 at 22:55 #761824Steve – I’ll manually create a temp password for Steve Caution and send it to you so you can start feeling yourself again.
February 27, 2015 at 23:24 #762055The issues with passwords/identities seems to be due to people having multiple accounts and either having no email or an out-of-date email associated to the account.
Again, anyone having probs email me david@theracingforum.co.uk and I’ll sort it out.
February 27, 2015 at 23:48 #762166I think the problem with my password was that it was only 6 letters and I was using a temporary one that you gave me about 2 years ago when I lost my old one, I could never change my password on the Old Forum.
In just 24 hours the site is improving, the headings look so much better.
Until the smileys come just have to make do with colon/bracket :) and semi-colon bracket ;) Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...February 28, 2015 at 11:49 #765365I do like Gill’s new car avitar ….very swish ….I had awful trouble getting on. so now I am rickylake2//./…Jeeze

I might get my pink hippo avitar back …that will cause a few shocks
February 28, 2015 at 12:07 #765487I’m a sequel too ricky, I don’t think it’s bad, I think I will treat myself to a new avatar. I think I had a defunct email as my contact address, I’m going to mail Corm to set reboot the original ST account.
February 28, 2015 at 12:24 #765617It’s already a lot more user-friendly than when I logged in yesterday.
February 28, 2015 at 12:29 #765634Ricky and ST – mail me at david@theracingforum.co.uk and I’ll get you back to the men you once were.
February 28, 2015 at 13:11 #765871It’s improving every time I pop my head round the door.
Glad you like my little car Ricky :) That’s Nobby, so named because his reg number is KM08 which if you squint, looks like KNOB. Funzies!
I too, am a sequel. I’m missing an H. :(I'd like to live in a place where they cordon off swans...February 28, 2015 at 15:31 #766622Yeah its very cool, , Im back as Ricky ….. now how do I get a good avitar ….any clues Gill ??? how do I go about it
February 28, 2015 at 15:54 #766682Well I think it has to be a selfie don’t you? ;)
I'd like to live in a place where they cordon off swans...February 28, 2015 at 16:38 #766936I liked Ricky Lake 2 because I hoped he was an all-weather loving alter ego but he’s gone already before the all-weather got any LOVE.
I still can’t work out how to quote a post other than copying and pasting. This b-quote button is doing nothing for me.
Also noticed that I used to be a Classic Winner but am now a “Participant” which sounds a whole lot less glamorous. Does one eventually graduate from participant to regular, to windbag and finally addict as time goes on, or all we all doomed to be equal under the communist flag and be citizen participant forever more?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 28, 2015 at 16:41 #766971At least you’re not an also ran….
Remember, it’s not the winning….it’s the taking part that counts.
Apparently
I'd like to live in a place where they cordon off swans...March 1, 2015 at 04:07 #772358As a database developer I am astonished that usernames and passwords had to be altered/re-registered.
That does not mean I do not appreciate the efforts of Corm and others in sustaining this site
March 1, 2015 at 13:51 #776278Hi seepigeon – the reason for this was that because of security issues and restrictions at servers (encryption issues etc) we could not migrate passwords from one server/hosting company to another. We sent out new temporary passwords to all accounts but LOTS of the emails linked to accounts seem to be out of date and many users seem to have multiple accounts. Also, our emails seem to have been going into people’s spam boxes (probably because we sent out 55,000 emails with same info in, more or less, one hit).
Where I could have improved on this I think was to let people know ahead of time (via a post on old site before the switch) so they could have ensured their email detail was up to date.
