What’s the point of it? Why is there a part of a circle (don’t think it’s quite a semi-circle) appended to the middle of the line at the edge of the penalty area? Has it ever served a practical purpose? Why bother painting it at all?

I would also add, why have quadrants at all ? Virtually every corner kick taken by today’s professional footballer, you see them deliberately place the ball from outside the quadrant. Why, when no possible advantage is gained from doing so.
It smacks of belligerent, childish behaviour. Oh, let’s see if I can get away with this just for the sake of it.

June 21, 2013 at 21:48 #443595The circle at the edge of the penalty area is to prevent players from encroaching when there’s a penalty, they have to be at least 10yds away, the circle indicates 10yds. I believe that only part of the ball rather than the whole of the ball has to be in the quadrant at a corner which is why players are allowed to place it on the outside edge.
