They’re on from 9:00 on Saturday, I’d guess the potential audience for an earlier start on the first two days wouldn’t justify the extra cost.

April 3, 2008 at 12:44 #155408Aintree – "a novelty meeting" How dare you? I need a slap smilie.
Aintree is my favourite meeting of the whole year, yes even ahead of Cheltenham.
It may have something to do with Aintree being a particularly lucky track for me but its a sharp track which suits quick horses and classy horses whereas Cheltenham is usually a war of attrition. Aintree is more select.
On the subject of Racing UK the channel does a very good job but it does need modifying and jazzing up a little bit. The big meetings have the same feel as Taunton on a Tuesday afternoon.
April 3, 2008 at 15:44 #155510Could do without the "cheering crowd" noises in the background long after the race has finished though….

And the ‘galloping hoofbeats’ which make it sound as though every race is being run along the Melling Road, even in Red-Marauder-ish conditions.
April 3, 2008 at 18:07 #155571Blanket coverage of Cheltenham (admitedly with plenty of padding from Harry Findley) but nothing live until 1.00 today. In my opinion shame Aintree didn’t join Ascot on ATR – can’t believe they wouldn’t have re-scheduled their morning programmes.
Aintree unfortunately is one of the courses RUK owns along with Cheltenham and Newmarket so they will never appear on ATR
April 3, 2008 at 19:12 #155586RUK coverage of racing is way ahead of all the competition imo.
Better presenters and better ‘tipsters’. Today was a B team partnership granted, and the stealthy introduction of adverts is a worrying trend, but I preferred their coverage over the Beeb. And if it wasn’t for in-running (and Mike Cattermole) I’d watch the races on there as well!.
The same with Cheltenham. Their coverage, with Lydia, and Mellish/Neesom/Cunningham ,and preferably no support meeting to get in the way, is just about spot on.
ATR is a terrible channel – unless you have a predeliction for leg-lock Luke talking baloney and Ocean Finance adverts running over the start of races.
April 5, 2008 at 12:09 #156134Ooh, looks like it’s the dream ticket of Luck, Hislop, Neesom and Mellish all together on RUK’s coverage this afternoon. No danger of me deserting the channel for Auntie Beeb on this occasion, then….

April 5, 2008 at 16:55 #156197Cattermole had a dreadful National. He sounded confused throughout. Called Bewleys Berry and King Johns Castle as fallers.
Time to call it a day.April 5, 2008 at 17:11 #156210A big plus to Richard Hoiles, who I thought did a lovely commentary on the people’s race. He constantly read out the jockey’s names (probably more than the horses), which I thought was a lovely touch and great for the families etc watching in the stands. Great job.
April 5, 2008 at 17:15 #156215Totally agree Rich, well done Richard.

Value Is EverythingApril 5, 2008 at 17:17 #156218Seconded – a fine, people-oriented call for the people’s race. Just what it needed.

April 5, 2008 at 17:20 #156221A fine performance from our own Richard Hoiles who is rapidly coming of age this season.
April 5, 2008 at 17:26 #156225As I have said eslewhere on the forum Richard had a brilliant day today whilst, conversely, it was not one of Mike Cattamole’s better days in the office.
I think Ricard did a brilliant job bailing out the Cat in the National.
It does beg the question if the National is too big a job for two callers – it is a near impossible call.
There are enough decent callers and having four covering the National course would be much easier for all concerned.
Sir Peter is known as "the voice of racing" I think Richard Hoiles will be challenging for the crowm
April 5, 2008 at 18:54 #156259What I didn’t like is that Catt didn’t acknowledge his mistake- BB just reappeared having "survived the carnage earlier on"
Wonder if any in-running players had kittens when he rose from the dead to lead about 4 out!April 5, 2008 at 20:13 #156290His errors were not reflected in the in running market. I suppose people have learnt after his high profile Newbury mistake that he is a dodgy commentator.
It is his arrogance in not acknowledging his mistakes that really grates.
April 5, 2008 at 20:19 #156293His errors weren’t reflected on the in-running market because any of the big players would have been watching the fast pics on terrestrial. Someone got away with going 1000 on Mon Michel prematurely after the Crock got it mized up somehow with Poquelin.
April 5, 2008 at 20:34 #156298As I’ve mentioned before its not the fact he makes mistakes, we all do and its a tough job. An admission of that or a simple apology would suffice. It never seems to come from the Catt for some reason. King Johns Castle was just about the easiest spot in the race which was a good job ’cause the Beeb hardly mentioned him either!
