One to concentrate on the leaders and one to pick up the fallers wuold make more sense – v difficult to keep looking back to spot colours when you’re also expected to name the ones still running.
It surely wouldn’t be that difficult to give the spotter some technology to put the names of fallers on a running display across the bottom of the screen, like the ubiquitous teleprinter used for football.
Even with sixteen fences, wouldn’t it be feasible to have a spotter with a hand held device stationed at every fence to report fallers. If I can come up with this after five minutes thought, why haven’t the TV producers?
The passing of commentary from one person to another always breaks the rhythm of the commentator. They tried it at Cheltenham when Ch4 first had the contract and it was a shambles.

While I’m loath to criticise those fortunate enough to be gifted the opportunity of calling a National, as it’s the toughest assignment they’re likely to face, it has to be said Cattermole was embarrasingly poor. Not just his mis-identification of fallers (both BB and KJC were towards the top of the market incidentally, therefore you’d have thought their colours would have been memorised) but his rushed, confused delivery; that suave, relaxed voice so well suited to calling five novice chasers trundling round a gaff becomes an incoherent dysphony.
If his confidence is at a low ebb, then why can’t he be man enough to admit it and take some time out, or would he prefer the indignity of being shown the door?

Congratulations, Drone!

I thought it a wiser choice than "incoherent drone", though many would doubtless think that most appropriate

April 7, 2008 at 08:26 #156606"Cool Hoiles halts drunken threat to National commentary"
Todays RPA drunken stag party of eight gatecrashed his box seconds before the start,(he had voiced his concerns earlier to the police)
He thought it best to pacify them rather than kick them out. He told them they could stay if they were quiet and it ended well.
April 11, 2009 at 21:02 #10919I was really looking forward to see the new preview programme which debuted today. RUK is a channel desperately in need of some editorial content outside the normal racing hours.
Despite superior content and overall better presenters and analysts, it is consistently bettered in its coverage by ATR, who with far less to work on and a roster of some moderate (and a few exceptional people), work their socks off in the areas of previewing, discussion and the website.
MYC made an inauspicious start with the very first sentence from Angus Mc giving the game away…" we will be on air each Saturday an hour before the first race".
Not an hour before our normal start mind, which would indeed be additional programming for the subscription channel, but an hour before the first race which means no extra programming on most Saturdays and an extra half hour on some.
Also, the structure of the hour was hardly radical, Angus McNae and James Willoughby in the studio conversing with Lydia and Steve at the track. I may be wrong on this but if memory serves this is pretty much the formula already with the exception they have added video to the audio from the studio and have an analysist there also, JW on this occasion.
Cost still seems to be critical factor at the station with little or no additional bandwidth required and largely the same personnel.
I appreciate they are up against the might of Sky (News International) in terms of spending power on resource (I have been in this unenviable position myself in a similar business) but if this is really a sponsored section of the programming, I feel we deserve a little more committment from the Channel and I could do without the pretence that this is a new feature which it seemed to me fairly clearly that it was not.
I enjoyed the show for itself but there is rarely a discussion on horse racing that I don’t enjoy.April 11, 2009 at 21:08 #221350It should be called Replay uk. They could also do something to their third rate website.
April 11, 2009 at 21:23 #221352Struggling to see the point of it. If you want to provide some sort advice to punters it is no good having that advice hours after the early prices have disappeared. You also need much better pundits than James ‘desperately looking for an angle’ Willoughby.
April 12, 2009 at 03:39 #221390Was in the Annual Members bar when this programme came on and prompty left after 5-10 mins.
Utter drivel with James Willoughy arseing about with a Creme Egg for godsake.
All they are trying to do is a version of Get On, maybe it will improve but it needs another pairing, I think McNae and Willoughby are so far up their own backsides that they may aswell just elope and marry each other.

At least Racing UK are trying something different guys, there is too many people who are prepared to jump up and complain maybe they do it without even thinking through why there doing it. The sport is boring, one dimensional, the wrong people run it, this bloke don’t know what hes saying because he hasn’t got the same approach as me, not enough this and not enough that etc. In recent times both RUK & ATR have improved their coverage and resources which I am happy with, they are not forcing you to like the program but its better than bloody nothing.
April 12, 2009 at 13:08 #221410I quite agree they are at least trying something, they really do need a morning studio program covering the major meetings fronted by l hislop who has the right tv manner,i am sure it would be better than the morning line which was dreadful on saturday apart from simon holt and hayley turner, the rest were pathetic which i suppose was in line with saturdays racing.
April 12, 2009 at 14:10 #221418. In recent times both RUK & ATR have improved their coverage and resources which I am happy with, .
Whilst this could fairly be said of ATR the opposite is true at RUK, which is my point.
April 12, 2009 at 14:46 #221427I am getting more and more disillusioned with Racing UK.
It seems ridiculous to me that subscribers to a channel should be bombarded with bookmakers’ adverts and promotions for RUK.
Some of the presenters really need a kick up the backside, they are so smug that it is unbelieveable. Angus McNae, the bluffer that he is, gives the impression that he has been assured that he has a job for life.
…………or is it that I’m just a miserable old bustard?!
Colin
April 12, 2009 at 15:09 #221436I think i must be getting grumpy in my old age but if Angus McNae says thus far one more time i will have to get a new tv.

Fair arguments both sides but in general for the people who are against RUK and ATR what would you like to see them doing more off in your opinions? less betting orientated?
April 12, 2009 at 23:06 #221512Personally I have no interest in previews or punditry.
In an ideal world I would be happy with paddock shots of all the runners, preferably without comment (although the mute button works OK), then shots of all the runners going down, (during which time there is a betting scroll along the bottom of the screen) then the race itself followed by a head-on (again without comment) and if time allows a replay.
It would be cheaper service to provide as there would be no need to pay the pundits – the only presentation would be a continuity announcer to read the results.
