Hi Every one, I have here two burning questions ok,now at the race course last wednesday I got into a heated discussion about who the best Flat Trainer was and who the Best Jumps trainer was in the UK.
Now forget all the media hype on various trainers who are always in the headlines etc.
So who is the best Flat trainer? and
Who is the best Jumps Trainer?
I would Vote John Gosden up among the best of the flat, and would vote maybe Paul Nickols or Nicky Henderson among the best of the jumps.
Would really like to hear if any one else has any views on the two above questions?

Flat – Richard Hannon
Jumps – Alan KingSorry for no reasoning but the match is about to kick off, although I will edit this post.
November 30, 2008 at 21:32 #193372A couple of not so well known names, Vic Dartnall (NH) and Don Cantillon (Flat and NH).
December 1, 2008 at 15:03 #193520I think it would almost be more worthwhile to have a subcategory…ie 2 mile hurdlers. Gary Moore of course
"Best" often means favourite and has more to do how profitable a stable has been and how closely you understand them. Although some stables are baffling

I think the hunt trainers pick themselves but Nichols is clearly the best for me. Perhaps because hes such a straightforward character (his interview on RUK last week was excellent) he doesnt get labelled with the the "wily genius" tag (which is well overused). I just like the way he continually improves his horses and how he seemingly maximises all their potential. Interesting that his level stakes profit has been continully impressive despite being very high profile
On the flat Micheal Jarvis would be a favourite of mine
December 1, 2008 at 15:37 #193530Nicky Henderson in National Hunt Circles.
Sir Michael Stoute.December 2, 2008 at 09:27 #193696Sir Michael Stoute.
Such a cunning individual, reflected in the strategic placement of his horses. I see his name, I think twice about ruling a line regardless of form.
IMO his horses are not always in a race to win it like say, Luca Cumani. But Stoute’s will creep up on you without warning and win due to a training masterstroke.
That is defining legendary – think if he were handed expensive horseflesh on a platter a la Coolmore.

Er I think he might get his share!!
December 2, 2008 at 15:54 #193731Nicky Henderson, Paul Nichols, Alan King, Ferdy Murphy, Jonjo O’Neill, Nigel Twiston-Davies, Howard Johnson, John Quinn, Peter Monetith Lenny Lungo, Alan Brown and My Uncle Tommy when he gets his licence in a dead heat for first…..Sir Michale Stoute on the flat.
December 2, 2008 at 16:04 #193735I take it Len Lungo got the run of the race there, Fist?

December 2, 2008 at 18:16 #193771Further proof of Gary Moore’s skills with the victory of Wyeth in the first at Lingfield. The quirky brother to Grandera and half-brother to George Washington was 0-7 for Fanshawe but is now 2 from 4 for Gal on the Flat and one from 2 over sticks. The guy really is different class.
December 2, 2008 at 18:43 #193778Agree agree
Of course he will never be referred to as a "genius" or "wizard" because hes a straightforward bloke from Brighton
Without having examined the race in depth, I Have Dreamed and Bring it on home are his likely runners in the 2 mile hurdle at Sandown on Sat. Former would look to be the one and given that he loves these races (and farms them) and often has a few more than this entered, should we take the hint???
December 2, 2008 at 19:28 #193824I know the topic is "in the UK" but I’ve been really impressed by Gordon Elliott in Ireland.
He’s starting to get sent some horses from big owners now – such as Tharawaat, (Gigginstown/Michael O’Leary) who looks the top juvenile we’ve seen this side of the water so far.
Generally maximises the winning chances of all his horses.
December 6, 2008 at 12:47 #194817What’s his name from Ballydoyle deserves some credit.Last year with Dylan Thomas and this year with the Duke.He keeps so many horses at peak condition for months on end.Remember Peepin Fawn and Halfway to Heaven also?Race after race they are there at the finish. That’s him Aidan O’Brien.

His Dad made the best Fish n’ Chips in Lanarkshire Scotland..maybe even the whole wide world. That gave him a head start. A closer look you will notice all his owners are big fat *astards.
December 6, 2008 at 22:14 #194935Answer to original question.
Paul Nicholls.
Paul Nicholls for BBC sports personality of the year!
