Not the ideal method and I’m sure some excellent callers will receive no votes but no other method is possible on here. So for a bit of fun who’s dulcet tones do you prefer from the top ten callers listed?
Thought you would have included the ubiquitous Thommo on your list. You can’t avoid the man :angry: .
The fact that Thommo & Catt aren’t include says it all. Its all been said on here plenty before anyway. My personal fave is Simon Holt who has improved recently since his initial introcution to C4 when he tended to go over the top in finishes. Whether he’s at a top meeting on a Saturday or a quiet little Fontwell/Plumpton meeting i think he’s excellent. I met him recently at Ludlow and spoke breifly and he seemed a genuine decent bloke too with no heirs or graces whatsoever.
Supplementary entries are possible at voters request although both Catt and Tommo will feature in the follow up "worst" racecourse commentator category.
I cant believe you have left Thommo off the list .. he is without the best of the bunch.
This thread has the potential to keep the TRF legal department busy!
I have strong feelings about commentators as they can add so much to the enjoyment of racing and also prompt a move for the mute button. I will refrain from publishing my list of the good the bad and the hopeless. In general I like the understated professional approach rather than the smart a**e ego merchant using clichés and personalised phrases.
What I want from a commentator is an accurate call of the leaders with mentions of how well the fancied runners are travelling.<br>
Not surprised that Simon Holt is leading already. He’s my favorite – clear, concise and has a sense of humour as well. Been to N/Abb’t and Exeter when he’s been there and he was excellent. <br>Thommo is the worst imo and I only use the mute button whilst watching horse racing when he’s on.
Dave Smith is a much underrated caller – accurate, not given to excessive hyperbole and tells it how it is. I’m really surprised he doesn’t get more business.

Dave Smith accurate? I don’t think so. He has made some very big errors in recent months.

When the roster so often includes Tommo and Gee Gee, Alan Howes is a breath of fresh air at Southwell.
Well, since the ‘Cat’ isn’t there i went for Mark Johnson, both of whom are, IMO the best in the country. Easy to understand and not a complete bore unlike some, and are usually very accurate.
It really annoys me with some when 2horses have gone miles clear that they don’t always mention the horse in 3rd (even though a distant third). Thommo is one good at doing this.
Not sure if anyone on here got the DVD race night game with Mark Johnson commentating on it, but he is very good on that also, which must have been a fairly hard job, especially when he knew the names of the horses running in real life.

he’s a better presenter, at least we get to see him that way. Unfortunately he doesn’t have a lot of competition.
For commentaries I would put Darren Owen above most of those on the list.
I like Iain Mackenzie’s commentaries although he’s not on the list. Of those on the list I think Richard Hoiles makes the best listening.
I enjoy listening to Des Scahill, the voice of Irish racing, though I wouldn’t betting a he drives some up he wall!
Derek Thompson drives me up the wall and back down the other side and off into the countryside.
Simon Holt is knowledgeable and generally a sound commentator, but has a tendency to get a little over-excited in his races.

Have to say I am a big fan of John Hunt who adds real enthusiam and excitement to his commentaries.
Of the others who warrant respect are Holt obviously, Richard Hoiles (who misses very little and instead of just reciting those from first to last imparts useful details such as how horses are travelling, jumping and if they’ve gone off too fast etc). The antithesis to Hoiles unfortunately is the Catt who has no grasp of how horses are travelling etc and is in the Tommo league when it comes to calling them home.
I like Mark Johnson’s commentaries of the hunter chases round Stratford and his legendary course commentary when Moscow beat Azerty and Well Chief in the Tingle Creek. Makes the hairs on ur neck stand up!
Holt and Hoiles are my dream team, with Holt just nosing ahead.
I like Holt’s enthusiasm, which isn’t too over the top (if you want over the top, listen to the American commentators). Hoiles is professional and accurate, as well as being a decent and down to earth guy.
I liked Aussie Jim when he first started out with the BBC, but he’s plummeted down the list now due to his shocking inaccuracies (and no doubt a lack of practice).
