Can anyone recommend somewhere reasonably cheap to stay in Newmarket or very nearby please. Will be on holiday in UK in May and was hoping to take in one of the Guineas days.
April 2, 2009 at 16:09 #219706I’m not sure, but I would consider Cambridge nearby which is only a short taxi or bus ride away, and will probably have more choice, especially around Guineas time.
April 2, 2009 at 17:52 #219722The Firs bed and breakfast 70 a night
well worth it just 5 mins outside Newmarket.
Hope this helpsApril 2, 2009 at 18:42 #219743We decided to go to champions day at late notice but all hotels were full but luckily travel lodge at Barton Mills had plenty spare and was cheap too and also found a lot of other racing people stayed there. Was decent enough and not too far out if travelling by car but no good if relying on walking or buses.
April 2, 2009 at 18:48 #219752I could list the hotels and guest houses in Newmarket but for Guineas week they are likely to be already booked up.
You could certainly try out the hotels in Cambridge or Bury St Edmunds as alternatives and the Holiday Inn (which they call Cambridge) but is actually on A14 at Histon is probably the most convenient.
The Newmarket Tourist Board based at the historic Palace House (just behind the High Street off Sun Lane – approach from road between Rutland and TK Maxx – will have loads of information on hotels/b and bs if required – you never know in recessionary times there may be late availability.

Staying in Cambridge famous for its Polytechnic and using the free bus service that they run on racedays.
April 3, 2009 at 02:53 #219913Personally would always go to Bury St Edmunds, which has a lot more character than Newmarket. If it’s sunny, the Abbey grounds are very pleasant for a stroll before racing, and there are several good pubs and restaurants (including the Nut Shell, the smallest pub in the world).
The Angel is a very good hotel if you have the money, and the Ounce House is a very good, more reasonable alternative.
April 4, 2009 at 01:50 #220129Mr Frisk – sadly Bury is losing it’s "character" – since you’ve been there they have now opened the monstrosity that is the "Arc" shopping centre (shudder). Angel is good but hard to park there now and I’d rather stay at the Ravenwood Hall if out that way now that it has good access to A14.
