tbf I don’t think they are saying that just as many women are autistic. Only that the number of autistic women has been underestimated in the past because of their ability to hide the symptoms. ie I believe it used to be thought autistic men greatly outnumber autistic women. Now the figures are closer together but still not the same number as men.

On linking betting to ‘fun’ I have always thought of that description as quite strange. I have for the most part seen it as an enjoyable challenge. Describing it as ‘fun’ seems to imply that you are not too bothered about losing. If that is the case maybe you shouldn’t have started betting. There’s certainly nothing funny about losing money.

“Fun” in this case (and in the advert) means “enjoyment”, Stilvi. Enjoymwnt that has nothing to do with being “funny”.

…And I disagree, losing money can be enjoyable. You don’t have to show a profit to enjoy betting. Just like someone doesn’t need to make a profit from buying a pint down the pub, or going to see Liverpool play at Anfield.

Thousands of people do enjoy a flutter without any hope (or very little hope) of showing an overall profit. Nothing wrong with that, we are all interested in things for different reasons. It’s when betting gets out of control and / or the punter gets depressed and needs a bet for the sake of betting… At that point, “when the fun stops stop”.

Thankfully, hardly any bets since the opening thread.

Did have one today, Barnahash Primrose in the last at Fairyhouse. Best form in the race, form suggested conditions wouldn’t be an issue, and all in all looked a solid favourite.

In reality market drifter, looked as if hated conditions, and beaten half the track.

Even selective backing often ends up with this sort of mystifying rubbish. It’s made more painful that someone appears to know these negative things are going to happen. How is that when the facts in open view suggest otherwise?

I notice the Flat has started.

Already O’Brien has pulled the 1,000 Guineas favourite. Tough luck ante-post punters.

A 33/1 shot bolts up in the Lincoln.

Aidan’s best ever clocks up the third pathetic race of his career as a 28/1 shot bolts up in the Sheema Classic.

What great adverts for the sport. Where is the incentive to bet on this sort of stuff? It’s become an easy opportunity to just throw money away. Unless you are extremely lucky I suspect hardly anyone wins pre-race these days. It’s hard to believe bookmakers will need restrictions in the future as they won’t have anyone left worth restricting – mugs only. Even the mugs might eventually get the message.

Aside from the betting it’s really sad to see a once great sport sink to it’s current level where a barrage of cheerleaders constantly try to turn the ordinary into the wonderful.

‘There is no value in horse race betting anymore’ that’s simply not true. The fractions move too much not to be able to find value. Sure compilers and punters have more knowledge and tools at their disposal but the only way there wouldn’t be value is if the opening odds where very accurate and the market hardly moved! For sure it’s harder than it used to be.

Maybe you should stop betting in bumpers, Stilvi. Especially bumpers in Ireland ridden by amateurs.

You might have made a profit at one time on it, but if it isn’t working now… find something else.

If I gave up betting in bumpers I would be close to giving up full stop. Nothing wrong with Irish Bumpers.

Stuck to my guns and gave the Aintree Festival a go. It’s a pale shadow of Cheltenham, with no real build up, but it’s a lot better than the dross in between.

Sometimes it’s such a fine line between winning and losing.

On the first day I just backed Kargese and Park Princess. Kargese was very well backed to turn over the favourite, but the race turned into a nightmare scenario for her supporters. I am sure the plan was the track Sir Gino and pounce late. As it was she ran much too freely and she was the one to tow the favourite into the race.

On the second day I was very keen on Chianti Classico, but having been backed he was ominously weak in the market. He jumped well, but faded away tamely at the business end. I don’t think he reproduced his Cheltenham performance. Despite previous good course form Sonigino was very poor, although he didn’t get the best ride and was hampered twice. Mystical Power was my only winner of the week, but I think he also under performed. I was only allowed £10 on the bet boost. Shakem Up’Arry jumped well, but never really travelled, and has run a shocker. Another to not reproduce.

The last day started badly with White Rhino not even declared. First and second came from that Uttoxeter race he ran in. Fine Margin was always too far back, and jumped poorly. Even on better ground I wouldn’t be keen to give him another chance. I took a chance on Esprit Du Potier, but both the drying ground and Josh The Boss effectively wrecked any chance he might have had. Pretty obvious he wouldn’t have beaten the winner even with an easy lead. Wasn’t going to have anything in the National, but the drying ground persuaded me to go with Corach Rambler. How can you legislate for a horse like that not getting anywhere near high enough at the first? Got crumbs back from an each way 4 places at just over 10/1 Libberty Hunter. Had I gone standard place terms it was a massive drifter to 33/1. Then to the final disaster. I had toyed with backing both Mister Meggitt and Horaces Pearl, but given the number of losses, just went with the favourite who ended up getting an atrocious ride from an atrocious rider. Horaces Pearl would have turned a bad losing week into a winning one.

This was an horrendous meeting for those who don’t bet short ones. The two darts that landed yesterday were probably fortunate. Even the short ones that won could have been readily opposed.

So just Punchestown to go. Let’s hope that delivers something better. I don’t intend on giving the Newmarket guessing games a second look.
