They don’t write children’s books like those any more.
Some might say that’s just as well.
But not me.
Anyway, I liked them all, but my favourite has to be The Magician’s Nephew because it was just so bloody clever.
The way it pulled together, and set the scene, for books already written was a masterpiece.

Sounds like the latest Ricci/Mullins import. I’ll lay you 4-1 for the Supreme Novices.
January 9, 2022 at 22:19 #1577307Tempting, but Plus Jadis is 1000 to four figures on Betfair Exchange with no takers, so I’ve got a feeling it’s going for the Ballymore.

I have Sherlock Holmes, Bond and then Narnia all patiently waiting. Rupert the bear and Noddy forced my milking teeth. Tintin was prevelant thereafter.
January 9, 2022 at 23:52 #1577320So many books I need to read before I croak it.I did love The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe but did go off it a bit when I realised it was quasi religious. I’ve got shelves full of books to read to my grandchildren but because we’ve shielded ourselves for most of the pandemic they don’t stay with me these days. I have just re read my favourite book from childhood, though. Ghost Horse by Joseph E Chipperfield. Took me ages to find it through a book search but it was one of those books that really shaped me as a person.
January 10, 2022 at 07:01 #1577336Rupert The Bear was my first memory of reading myself. No recollection of Narnia when I was a child. Is it a class thing or wrong generation?
January 10, 2022 at 09:42 #1577346I grew up in a very poor area of Birmingham but went to a very good primary school and one of my earliest memories is of the school taking us to a local library. The book I chose was The Call of the Wild. I can still remember choosing it. I don’t have a very good memory when it comes to events in my childhood but the memories I do have tend to include books. Bunty annuals at Christmas. Film annuals that had been passed on from someone else. Staying in a caravan one year that had a selection of paperbacks to read, the memory of which is intertwined with the smell of calor gas from the lights. I was an only child and books were my friends and they were usually about animals. I don’t think I read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe until I read it to my children. I still read childrens books and only read Mary Poppins recently because I’d heard that the books were quite dark.

January 10, 2022 at 10:12 #1577351The whole series turns out to have been religious at the end of the final book, Moehat.
It’s one big Christianity push.
I still enjoyed them as a child, though.

Does anyone remember the “Adventure” series by Willard Price? I always used to get one of those on my weekly trip to the local library.
January 10, 2022 at 14:38 #1577393Narnia was inspired, according to CS Lewis, by my native village of Rostrevor in Ireland. We also get a favourable mention in Ulysses.
January 10, 2022 at 14:59 #1577397I’m surprised no one has replied “Sporting Chronicle” tbh.

“Cruels and Hags and Incubuses, Wraiths, Horrors, Efreets, Sprites, Orknies, Wooses, and Ettins. In fact here were all those who were on the witch’s side and whom the Wolf had summoned at her command”
Also read Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader but no others, if memory serves
It goes without saying that I was reading Proust in my pram (a bit dim Clivexxxxxxx or what ) but that apart Tintin and a tad later Asterix were childhood faves: timeless tales for ‘children of all ages’ in truth. Ditto Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass
Blistering barnacles, thundering typhoons

It will probably go onto the pile of ‘books to read’ as I still haven’t got round to reading his Red Rum book.

Has anyone ever got to the end of Proust’s masterwork? I reached the end of Volume Three but could not face any more. The other volumes are in my bookcase, still unread about ten years later. I often feel like they are reproaching me for ignoring them.
January 11, 2022 at 22:04 #1577587I never got to the start.
As many of you may have noticed I am an utter CHILD, certainly where books are concerned, and most probably generally.
My lifetime book reading –
Childhood
Wind In The Willows
Just William books
Billy Bunter Books
Chronicles Of Narnia
The Hobbit
Lord Of The Rings
In My Teens
The Silmarillion
Watership Down
Plague Dogs
Aged 18
Tom Sharpe novels
The Bond Novels
Dick Francis’s Autobiography
A few years ago
The Children Of Hurin
My respect for the written word deteriorated over the years and this process was accelerated by my years in newspapers!
My lifetime book reading is about as rounded as a cube!
