I think they want these strict dress codes instilled for a few reasons. I’d imagine from a psychological viewpoint they think or know that people are more likely to part with inflated costs if they are dressed accordingly, from drink and food to various merchandise. I’d also imagine that places like Ascot find it more appropriate due to the royal connection. I was flicking through sky arts the other night and noticed a classical concert from the Berlin ampitheatre. Every body in the crowd was dressed casually in clothes ranging from hooded tops to bright polos and casual shirts. You’d have stood out like a soar thumb if you were wearing a suit. They all seemed and looked like civilised people who weren’t short of intellect, and most importantly they all looked as if they enjoyed themselves. I personally don’t give a damn what other people wear and think it’s all about freedom of choice. Although i can understand it from a marketing perspective.

the HKJC provides quite detailed guidance for different areas:

if you go only for the food plaza in the betting halls, then even in the members enclosure you can go down to singlets, shorts and flip-flops. bit like being in a huge betting shop that serves all kinds of food.

but venture out from the food plaza onto the steppings to see the horses live and those are not allowed, though jeans, t-shirts, and overalls still are.

hence "Casual" means different things for different areas.

in the boxes, its "Club Casual" or "Business Casual" depending on the type of box and at which track on which occasion.

ties are rarely compulsory anywhere in HK (outside of black tie events, sombre or joyful in nature), even where jackets and collared shirts or turtlenecks are required.

in practice at the races though, given the business and social networking that goes on in the box areas, ties are favoured by those wearing western business suits.

and always acceptable everywhere are Zhong Shan suits, Cheongsam, and Min Ou.

Dignified, pleasant on the eye, flattering and sufficiently ‘smart’ for both the racecourse and anywhere else that one encounters the public at large

HKJC your taste is impeccable. Club-Casual-to-Business-Casual should be the sartorial aim and standard of every gentleman everywhere

Are pressed knee-length twill shorts with bermuda socks still popular in Hong Kong Wit?

    I certainly hope so :)
