Was looking through the winners earlier on wikipedia and some races I did far better than others in
Got a terrible record in the supreme, don’t think I’ve ever backed the winner of that race. Wikipedia have already put Melon down as the winner and I’m on, but can’t work out if that’s a good omen or not
got a better record in the champion
mediocre record in the gold cup
are there any races at cheltenham you tend to do well in, and any you’ll stay away from because of your poor record?

You have to tell us what you fancy in the champion now!!!
I tend to do well in the Fred Winter and Coral Cup. I have gone for Divin Bere (10’s) and Peregrine Run (12’s) in both
March 13, 2017 at 14:10 #1291582Been punting all Grade 1 races at Cheltenham the last 5 years.
Of all the grade 1 races I have never had a winner in the bumper. Best record is in the Mares Hurdle where I’m 100% barring Annie’s fall.
Have done well in the JLT and RSA with four winners in the last two years; Vautour, Black Hercules, Don Poli and Blacklion
Also the Arkle where I had Douvan and Un De Sceaux but they’re hardly impressive picks as they were short priced favourites. The Novice Chase division seems to be my strongest division based on the above; this year I’m going Royal Caviar w/o Altior, Yorkhill and Alpha Des Obeaux

I’ve mentioned on here several times that I fancy Yanworth in the champion mate and am very confident he will win
I will be following you in on the CoralAlso got a terrible record in the bumper Vautour
In fact on bumper/supreme/neptune/triumph I have a dreadful record in general with hardly any winners
Yet on RSA/Gold cup/albert bartlett a much better record
This suggests to me that longer races are often more predictable. Novice races are trappy in general, yet they generate probably the most interest of any races going into the festival, despite the randomness of these contests. The fact that in a fast run two mile race involving novices, many of whom have great form going into the race, you’re very hard pushed to find the winner. At best a horse might have two lengths to spare over it’s rivals, easily negated by poor luck in running.
I’ve heard a lot on previews that the albert bartlett often throws up an upset winner, but I think that’s overplaying the berties dream angle, and in general I find it a much easier race to call. Perhaps it’s because that over a longer distance the better horse tends to come out on top more often.
I doubt I’m the only punter to find this trend and perhaps as punters we should be ignoring the supreme/triumph etc and focusing more on RSA/Potato race?
March 13, 2017 at 14:34 #1291593Albert bartlett arguably the toughest to work out for me personally this is the first year ive had a strong view
March 13, 2017 at 14:46 #1291597My favourite race of the week has always been the Coral Cup, although it’s annoying that I have to top up my ante post bets on the day to get first 5 places as usual. Betting wise the Ultima has always been my best race although it’s often been a heart over head bet [eg Chief Dan George].
March 13, 2017 at 15:00 #1291600I’ve done surprisingly well in the Supreme over the years with Cinders and Ashes, Champagne Fever and Altior being three of my proudest victories!
I’ve also got a surprisingly decent record in the bumper, which is strange considering i watch maybe half a dozen (if not less) throughout the course of the year?
March 13, 2017 at 16:12 #1291616I’ve a bad record in the handicaps in general st Cheltenham (though I did have UTPT last year when he won) but good record in the mares race. Unbeaten other than Annie’s fall.
And was all over Limini last year for the novice.
This year I’m on Limini and Airlie Beach
March 13, 2017 at 16:58 #1291624I’ve never backed the winner of the Coral Cup but I usually do quite well in the Ultima, having 3 of the last 4 winners including Golden Chieftan at 40s a few years ago.
I hate the bumper but it gave me my most satisfying Cheltenham result to date when I backed Cue Card at 40/1.
March 13, 2017 at 17:14 #1291626Funny that quite a few are nominating the Coral Cup because thats a strangely successful race for me to. I also seem to believe that it usually won by something in first half dozen of so in betting (im sure some anorak will pipe up now). Its also quite a spectacle too.
Other than that i would say nothing in particular either way. Im always amazed that people bet on every race because some are near impossible to form decent opinions on year after year. I would bet on about a third to half at the very most. Some races pass me by year after year.
March 13, 2017 at 19:08 #1291656I’ve done well in The Coral too Clive…….
The Best
1. Kim Muir
2. National Hunt Chase
3. Ultima Handicap
4. Gold Cup
5. Coral CupBest race for me without a doubt is The Kim Muir. 5 out of the last 8 winners, and 2 runners up in that time. One of those runner ups should have won easy, but was given a poor ride. This years main bets are on Another Hero & Doctor Harper, while have had a saver on Squouateur, and struggling not to bet What’s Happening.
On a 4 Timer this year in The 4 Miler, and my hopes are pinned on Tiger Roll, with Beware The Bear & Kerrow looking big dangers.
The Ultima gave me one of my proudest moments on here when I stuck Holywell up about 5 months in advance, and he won in style. Had some very good days in it over the years, and I’m with Holywell again tomorrow (as usual), and Theatre Guide looks way overpriced.
The Worst
1. Albert Bartlett
2. Arkle
3. The Plate
4. Fred Winter
5. FoxhunterI like The Albert Bartlett, but just can’t crack it at all, I’m hoping The Worlds End or Monalee can reverse the trend this year.
The Plate is one of my favourite races of The Festival, but haven’t had a horse make the frame (I’m pretty sure of this
) since I had Young Spartacus winning it, just the 14 years ago. Not even looking at it till final decs this year, in an effort to stop the rot.The Arkle is very definitely not one of my favourite races, but I can’t even have the consolation of finding the winner. Ordinary World ew for me tomorrow.
Never had the winner of The Fred Winter Or The Foxhunter, though to be fair, Venture to Cognac did win it………..does that count?
March 13, 2017 at 19:34 #1291667Interesting a lot of people doing well in the coral cup. Maybe because it’s a handicap there’s a lot of dead wood in there and as it’s a slightly longer one it’s quite predictable.
Anyway thanks guys for your replies and it’s good to get a lot of the quality tips on one page
March 14, 2017 at 10:01 #1291825I’ve also got a 100% record in the mares novice race!
