Lady Jane has been pretty much acting as an assistant trainer for some time hasn’t she? She’s certainly on the gallops watching the work often enough, recently taking Sir Henry’s part with the string when he became too ill to leave the car I believe.
Sadly I would think that Sir Henry has had ample time to plan a strategy for Warren place following his death. Given his renowned attention to detail and meticulous planning skills it seems unlikely he wouldn’t have had a contingency plan in place. The fact that nobody else has appeared from the background immediately to take over his mantle suggests to me that Lady Jane is going to try her hand at training at least in the short term.
I hope she does and that she’s a great success. Her stock rose massively with me following her incredible show of dignity at Ascot last week. Quite the most moving thing I’ve ever witnessed on a race course.
June 25, 2013 at 18:30 #444001I agree with Hammy in so far as the assistant would have taken the temporary license, if there was any thought of him taking the stable, as Neil Graham did when Dick Hern was ill.

June 27, 2013 at 05:38 #444100According to Brought Scott’s biography the Marshalls (assistant trainer and his wife) are more than qualified to step up to run Warren Place if required……very experienced and dedicated and if they were good enough for Henry………
June 27, 2013 at 12:17 #444119does anybody know what is going on with hot snap at the moment?
June 27, 2013 at 20:00 #444156Don’t forget that whilst Lady Jane was Henry’s secretary when they first met she is bred to be a horsewoman. Her brothers are Richard and Rae Guest and her sister Sally (Noseda) is a very accomplished work rider.

According to today’s post she is back in full training and going well. She is ground dependent though so they will hope for a wet spell.

And Sally has been very prominent over the last couple of years. She was the stable representative at Lingfield when I saw Joyeuse.
I am sure Lady Cecil knows her stuff. I suppose I am just saying that we are talking about tens of millions of pounds of thoroughbreds and a stable that has spent the last few seasons in the top 10. Some of those Juddmonte home-breeds are worth a few quid you know!

June 27, 2013 at 20:36 #444167FWIW, I would imagine that Sally Noseda may be thinking along the lines of her own ambition. I don’t know Mike Marshall and so can’t comment. From what I do know from contacts in the yard last year, LC did not have much to do with the yard externally. However her sister has always been the ambitious one – married first to Paul Eddery then followed by Jeremy Noseda. She has also worked for Sir Michael Stoute for a fair while. She has been very prominent in the last couple of seasons in the trainer’s absence. I’m not saying its going to happen, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it did. Maybe Jane will hold the licence with sister doing the training side.
Can not see Ben Cecil coming over here from California. He has made a good life over there and is doing pretty well.
July 22, 2013 at 23:18 #446258If I were Lady Cecil Joni I would be rallying the troops like Boadicea going into battle, I would have the best Bloodstock Agents out at the sales, keep my best and most faithful men by my side and fight to the death before I let anyone within the walls of my beloved Warren Place.
I really think Lady Cecil can continue (if she wants to) at Warren Place, she showed great strength and determination at Royal Ascot and Prince Khaled will remain faithful as long as he continues to be involved in horse racing.
I wouldn’t like to see the Qatar team move into the beautiful home that Sir Henry loved and cherished, somehow it wouldn’t seem right it’s such a lovely English Rose of a property and I hope it remains within the family at all costs.
It’s not going to be easy but when my husband went into hospital for 6 weeks for heart surgery I continued to run his business, I sat up all night going through his customer records and sales to help keep his wholesale business up and running until he came home again. With him being 6 weeks out of the picture his customers could have gone elsewhere but they stayed faithful and I managed to keep it ticking and orders went out and thankfully came in. Same with racing the horses will go out and the winners will come in…and they will, she has a loyal and faithful team and her owners won’t desert and hopefully will grow in numbers.
Sadly Sir Henry will not be coming home to Lady Jane, but she would have got a good idea over the years how the business runs and the type of horses that Sir Henry had an eye for (you could always pick them out in the paddock) Timepiece, Midday, Twice Over, they all had the stamp of approval of Sir Henry all over them.
I hope that Lady Jane and her team can continue to keep Sir Henry’s legacy alive and kicking at Warren Place..Pull up the drawbridge..arm the battlements and keep the enemy at bay.
God Bless Sir Henry his memory will live on at Warren Place somehow I’m sure of it.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 23, 2013 at 21:41 #446337A marvellous post Jac and an insight into you and the type of person you clearly are. Although I think we knew it anyway! Your husband is a lucky man!
Lady Jane has certainly made an incredible start. The strike rate is close on 30% and the horses are running so well. I think she will be sending a very good team to Glorious Goodwood and I am especially looking forward to seeing Hot Snap’s return as Henry always had a soft spot for her.
Of course I have no idea how things are being run at the moment but I did read a gallops report the other day saying that Mike Marshall was becoming more and more prominent and there was talk of him taking over the license. However Lady Jane certainly has the respect of all her owners and you are right to say that Prince Khaled will stay loyal if she is still at the helm. I suppose it will depend on whether she is happy to continue and if Mike and the rest of her staff are happy to continue supporting her. At the moment I can’t see any reason why they shouldn’t.

July 23, 2013 at 22:33 #446339Joni..my other half has to put up with a lot believe me, but thank you for those kind words.
Like you I loved Sir Henry and all that he stood for and I hope that somehow Lady Jane and her team will carry on and that Mike Marshall and the rest of the team keep supporting her and, as you said, why should there be any reason they would not.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 23, 2013 at 22:51 #446340I don’t know much about how the yard runs but I’ve really taken to Lady Cecil and if she has a strong team behind her I don’t see why things should change and like Joni says the strike rate is v good but whatever happens I’m sure it will be in the best interests of the yard.

Trip, you are a real star. Well done you…..
Blackbeard to conquer the World
July 23, 2013 at 23:34 #446343I was really glad when he came home though Nathan
If someone works so hard for something all their life nobody could sit back and let it go under, that’s why Lady Jane will stay at the helm of her husbands empire and keep the Cecil flag flying proud at Warren Place.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 1, 2013 at 09:53 #450045I saw Lord (Teddy) Grimthorpe interviewed on C4 yesterday and it appears the demise/running down of the Abdulla empire may have been prematurely reported.
With this in mind I started to wonder whether the Prince’s association with Sir Henry & Warren Place might about to be extended. Could it be that Prince Khaled would take over, as Juddemonte Farms, Warren Place et al and have it run along similar lines to the Godolphin operation? The decision to re-employ a retained jockey, James Doyle, and PKA’s long standing friendship with Sir Henry are interesting factors to take into account.
Of course I have no idea what details have been laid down in Sir Henry’s will but it would be of little surprise if the Prince had been at least mentioned in dispatches.
How this would all work and to whom the the task of running such an operation would be given I leave for others to speculate.
A good jockey doesn't need orders and a bad jockey couldn't carry them out; so it's best not to give them any.
September 1, 2013 at 13:37 #450052My view is that Lady Cecil will pass the reins onto someone else. I get the feeling that the responsibility of running the show at Warren Place is something that she doesn’t find easy or comfortable with. Cliches aside, and in all fairness to her, Sir Henry was one helluva act to follow in any case.
Most of the Prince Khalid Abdullah’s best horses will be heading to John Gosden’s now – which would make her task of maintaining those high standards doubly difficult.

September 23, 2013 at 19:35 #452228Great news that Lady Cecil has applied to continue at Warren Place next year. I’m sure that I’m not alone in wishing her every success.
