Terrific post, Seven Towers. I feel duty bound to mention Winterval at this stage as well, the “banning of Christmas” by Birmingham City Council that was of course nothing of the sort.

Stephen Fry rounded on the naysayers in an episode of Q.I., decrying their outrage as words to the effect of “so much fetid ar*se water”. Couldn’t agree more.

    gc

I remember that episode and quite right too about the ususal Winterval story which gets dragged out.

What i was mainly getting at is why do we get reports of the banning of things incase they upset Muslims, You should only ban something if it is found offensive in the first place.

    Just something to ponder.

Kelly Holmes wins two gold medals at the same Olympic games and is made a Dame.

Becky Addlington wins two gold medals at the same Olympic games and gets a OBE?

What is the difference between their achievements?

Why does one get a "higher" honour than the other?

I would imagine that it would be very unusual for someone as young as Becky Adlington to be made a Dame on the grounds of her age alone, I remember this was part of the discussion regarding honours after the Olympics, currently Ellen Macarthur at 28 was the youngest known Dame (which was considered exceptional at the time,) and even she was nearly a decade older than Adlington is now. Additionally, if she was made a Dame now what would the Queen give her in 2012 if she won another 2 Golds?
Kelly Holmes was already 34 when she got her gong and her career was virtually over. She had also achieved 2 Commonwealth Golds and won British sports personality of the year by that point and had been a Sergeant in the British army and a care worker with the disabled before becoming a full time athlete.
In the 2004 Olympics we only achieved 9 Golds compared to 19 this time round with Kelly providing 2 of them, this would have made her two golds more valuable in relation to the poorer performance of the team overall and she quite rightly stood out from the rest.
So in summary Paul, Kelly Holmes got the gong because she deserved it, she had achieved more in life and in the field of athletics than Becky Adlington has at the moment but there are potentially 10 more years of Adlington’s career left and if she is in the same form in London as she was in China she will get her title from the Queen.

but that’s why I wish they felt the same way about us..I feel that everyone in the world hates the English..the only country I’ve ever been to where they don’t is Crete

Ive travelled a fair bit and not found that at all

USA and (might suprise some) Germany, are particularly anglophile. Scandinavians are fascinated by england. I visit Paris quite a bit and find it very friendly there

The bloody Irish ( Including NI)can talk, they are bloody racist, they come out with stuff that British companies colleges etc have long since drilled their staff into not using.

Britain does have a problem with racisum, its people unwiling too accept that everyone is different. In people I mean the BNP, and people from across the religous spectrum ( Christians Muslems etc).

Allot of the problems can be avoided by talking too each and respecting each others values.

A good example would be companies not having too many staff of the same religoin on the same team so during the feast days you have enough cover, this is a problem in some parts of my own department but this also applies too having people parttime term time staff. Divercity works because you an have bums on seats at work thanks too people being on different calenders.

We also have too remember that we have laws which ban people insulting folk on grounds of race, religion, sexual oreintation etc. Its something which we should be thankful for. I saw footage of people going too US service personels funerals and shouting abuse at them, accusing them of being gay and damning them too hell, here they would be bloody arrested, in America they call it free speach.

the key thing in my opinion is respect for other peoples’ beliefs or way of life and an agreement to disagree about things within that framework….but to still be allowed to discuss it all openly…..

As George Carling once said, well along these lines anyway…"the media and politicians put too much emphasis on telling everyone how we’re different, instead of telling us how we’re similar". He says it’s a way of controlling the masses.

It’s true to an extent. I think racism is pretty much harsh verbal or physical abuse. It’s also sometime how you say something, and not what you say. I don’t think making stereotypes about what someone may or may not eat is racist. It’s either a funny remark, or an unfunny one.

The media like the things we don’t. They like racism and sectarianism, it gives them something to write about. If there is nothing serious to write about, they will scrape below the surface and magnify any slight remark.

I recall a little stunt by the sun newspaper. They parked a car in a rough part of Glasgow, bedecked it with English flags, then ran it as an anti English racism story when a group of neds(chavs) vandalised it.(during a time when England qualified for a tournament, and Scotland didn’t)

This has been going on for years.

And I said it was a long time ago on this forum and was told I was a racist for saying it.

You know who you are. :x

The do gooders have seen to the term ‘racist’ or ‘bigot’ is devalued 100 fold. Those words don’t mean anything to me anymore.

I think racism is used as an catch all insult by the left and yes, it is devalued

When a far (?) left sympathiser on here ( i wont name names) defended calls for the extermination of a race (or two) in terms that hitler would have blanched at as "the language of the dispossessed", then you know full well that the moral compass has completely broken down completely
