Didn’t they [in a time long long ago before the internet]spray ‘Stone Roses’ all over Manchester one night? Or is that a rock’n’roll myth?
They did have a run-in with the law for revisiting either the office or studios of their former record label Silvertone and "improving" the decor with a very liberal application of paint. I believe that was primarily in retalliation for the withholding of royalties.

December 16, 2009 at 13:56 #264091Was at the Ian Brown gig last night.
He still can’t sing to save his life, but he is top banana in all other rock’n’roll respects.
Ian Brown. I went to see The Stone Roses at Leicester University in 1989. Two things stand out, firstly the look of shock on the face of my local landlords daughters face when she saw me and a mate stroll in and saying "what are you oldies doing here?". Bearing in mind I was only 21 at the time it came as a bit of a shock. Secondly it is without doubt the loudest concert I have ever attended, not helped if memory serves me right by the acoustics of the hall we were in and the quality of the equipment they were using. My ears were ringing/vibrating for days afterwards. Happy days.

December 19, 2009 at 09:24 #264475Didn’t they [in a time long long ago before the internet]spray ‘Stone Roses’ all over Manchester one night? Or is that a rock’n’roll myth? Is he still the only guy on the planet who still wears shell suits??
I used to have business in a building in Manchester called Peter House which has a view across St Peter’s Square to the lovely Central Library building and I noticed "Stone Roses" sprayed across the wall and also noted many more examples across the city. at that time I’d not heard of the band. It certainly worked in getting them talked about in the city after that.
Fortunately their musical talents were sufficient to make the exercise worthwhile
December 19, 2009 at 13:05 #264517Thanks for that; I thought my memory was playing tricks with me again, and couldn’t remember where I’d read it. I know graffiti is a bit naughty, but it did sound like an incredibly cool thing to do. Perhaps some of it should have been kept for posterity. The Stone Roses completely passed me by [was suffering from baby brain in the eighties] and it was only when they came top in a ‘best album of the century’ poll that I went out and bought a load of their stuff.
December 20, 2009 at 16:52 #264683You have Carlisle to blame for this post, otherwise I’d be there right now
. Herewith the annual irritation of my Not The Festive 50 – hope something, anything, inamongst this little lot resonates with you!gc
1) CASIOTONE FOR THE PAINFULLY ALONE – White Corolla
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3dUgPvkYnw
Plaintive, lo-fi, honest, and far greater than the sum of its parts. Possibly also the only song in history to rhyme "Renault" with "temperamental".2) CATHERINE A D – Carry Your Heart
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ehu13YgeRc
Wonderful noir-pop from striking London-based singer-guitarist. Glibly described by an associate as "a Tesco Value Kate Bush", shortly before I hit him.3) HAZEL WINTER – The Candyman Walks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jugNw7rSdw
As endorsed by myself and Moehat at length on this thread – see above!4) GRIZZLY BEAR – Two Weeks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjecYugTbIQ
A career highlight from a band with both feet firmly under the Chamber Pop table nowadays. I’m sure Brian Wilson would approve.5) CASIOKIDS – Fot i Hose
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOGWjMGDNRM
Engaging, catchy Norwegian sextet – probably the act I most regret not seeing at Latitude this year.6) SPARKS – I Can’t Believe That You Would Fall For All The Crap In This Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG5fSQka4ck
Oh, to still be this interesting, vital, inventive and downright hilarious after nearly 40 years in the business…7) THE DUCKWORTH LEWIS METHOD – The Age of Revolution
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxuV0A1Jlxk
Stand-out track from The Divine Comedy’s off-shoot cricket-themed album, which was an even better-realised piece of work than it promised to be on paper.8) THE LOYAL TROOPER – The Doctor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3mWGfvouYI
Simple, devastating paean to addictions. Hope his appearance at the Indietracks festival this summer will help bring The Loyal Trooper to greater prominence.9) THE COMPANY PRESENTS ROY MOLLER – Brother Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kczQJRHY-k
Belle and Sebastian-endorsed alt.country performer and another to go down a storm at Indietracks.10) THE SMITTENS – One Hundred Roses
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ycf0jp-urc
If Russell Howard were American, gay and possessive of dodgy knitwear he’d be the Smittens. Unremittingly sweet, optimistic and devoid of cynicism. Hold them close.11) ANIMAL COLLECTIVE – My Girls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zol2MJf6XNE&feature=fvw
Highlight from the career-defining "Merriweather Post Pavilion", the culmination of around a decade’s worth of barking sonic experiments and increasing pop sensibilities.12) **** BUTTONS – Space Mountain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_T7vyWoSwo
Staggering – like a dirtier, more aggressive Boards Of Canada, if that doesn’t do either band a disservice.13) THE PAINS AT BEING PURE AT HEART – Come Saturday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjYFSyVF1Ks
Clearly in thrall to Sarah Records lynchpins The Field Mice without brainlessly impersonating them, and among the most rewarding listens on the American indiepop circuit at present.14) FRÁNÇOIS & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS – Be Water (Je suis de l’eau)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oEYnF_JaKg
Charismatic Bristol-based Frenchman with a splendid line in original pastoral pop. This was the most straightforward, immediate pleasure from an album still only three weeks old at the time of writing.15) THE XX – Crystalised
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pib8eYDSFEI
Diffident South London four-piece with a quietly compelling debut. The same associate mentioned above described The XX as "the chav Tricky" – he’s got some learning to do.16) CHEW LIPS – Solo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_5zfOa7CDI
Know almost nothing about this lot, but the similarities with some of Monika Records’ roster, such as Komeit, drew me in.17) EDITORS – Papillon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq4tyDRhU_4
A swing very much towards a more synth-oriented sound for album number three, and a winning one.18) PASSION PIT – The Reeling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVstHPhaJ6M
Joyous earthy synth pop with a huge chorus.19) LONEY, DEAR – Airport Surroundings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwmPACtcITg&feature=fvst
Splendid return from one-man Swedish hive of musical industry. Real underlying insistence to this one that appeals greatly.20) COLA JET SET – El Sueńo de mi vida
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyJFBKkoTLE
60s pop-fixated Spaniards. Definitely feels like something from another place and time.21) TENDER TRAP – Fireworks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sRi24_0rzw
The first lady of anorak pop, Amelia Fletcher (Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research), still hasn’t forgotten how to nail a tune 24 years since first discovering "boy" and "joy" rhyme. Bless.22) FITNESS FOREVER – Vacanze a Settembre
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlIqlvTmPHs
Italian easy listening / indiepop hybrid, and as splendid as that doubtless sounds.23) HUMOUSEXUAL – Come Take My Hand in Winter
(no URL available)
DIY punk-pop / folk duo pick up where they left off five years ago, with winning tales of political / social awarenes and having it off. Taken from Cherryade’s "A Very Cherry Christmas 5" compilation – sorry, no clip available.24) ANIMAL COLLECTIVE – Summertime Clothes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxhaRgJUMl8
See 11!25) AU REVOIR SIMONE – All Or Nothing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUVgdiSM4tw
Three disarming young things in ginghams with a bank of keyboards and heads full of four-minute melancholy pop treasures. Business as usual on the new album, and what fine business it is.26) SAINT ETIENNE – Method of Modern Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi0OvJkLiww
Soaraway new track and better than it had any right to be as a contractual obligation track on another "best of" release last winter.27) CAMERA OBSCURA – French Navy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH9n8LVY0vs
First single and one of several standouts on the "My Maudlin Career" album. A band a decade in, now, and evidently at the height of their powers.28) DOWNDIME – Lessons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFTia8F1AHw
Not quite as planet-consuming a switch as Dave Grohl’s, but a very pleasing low-fi pop debut from the new project of the former Boyracer drummer. More please!29) FRÁNÇOIS & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS – Remind
(no URL available)
The first sign of world music influences being integrated into Francois’ musical template, and most successfully so. No clip available as yet.30) PJ HARVEY & JOHN PARISH – Black Hearted Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWrfLhX964I
At last a follow-up to "Dance Hall at Louse Point", released some 14 years ago. No rush or anything…31) ROSE ELINOR DOUGALL – Stop / Start / Synchro
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHDYzPCfo-Q
Ex-Pipette reveals a less throwaway, slightly darker hue. Sounds a bit Siouxsie Sioux to me in places, but then it’s been a long day…32) CORNERSHOP – The Roll-Off Characteristics (of History in the Making)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLgueesvGxk
A triumphant return, and in common with more or less everything else they’ve ever done, better than that sodding Big Beat rendering of "Brimfull of Asha" which plagues us and them still…33) FRANZ FERDINAND – No You Girls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5idcarc5rc
One of few bands of their type not to disappear from the charts completely in a year that’s been the biggest commercial bloodbath for guitar bands arguably since the Live Aid era. There’s life in the old arty-party post-punk revivalists yet.34) PET SHOP BOYS – Love Etc.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InBiaRBUjUs
Speaking of life, aren’t you glad we haven’t had this lot put to sleep? I know I am.35) THE AGITATOR – All That You Got
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zbI6gio9xw
Pared down as you like. One percussionist, and one sizeable pair of lungs. Tis all.36) KUTIMAN-THRU-YOU – This Is What It Became
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAvS0pc9NIw
Like little else released this year – a stew of dancehall, dub, plunderphonics and stuff found off the Internet.37) FRÁNÇOIS & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS – Do You Do
(no URL available)
Almost hymnal interlude from the current album. Again, no clip to share as yet.38) BUCK 65 – Blood Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq5YtipSjsw
Towering Canadian alt.hip-hop track, aided by some reworking from Sufjan Stevens, and the standout on the AIDS charity double album Dark Was The Night, a worthy investment for so many reasons.39) THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART – Higher Than The Stars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNpSX42EcKw
Hard not to imagine this could have appeared on The Field Mice’s "Snowball" album 20 years previously – perfectly observed, but with a depth all its own.40) TODDLA T – Shake It
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhMCsO0ubiM
Catchy, twitchy, insistent Sheffield grime. Have learned from the parent album "Skanky Skanky" that the word "standard" now apparently means "excellent". I be down wid da kidz, innit.41) PATRICK WOLF & ELIZA CARTHY – The Bachelor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6MVXUvd0Rk
London nature-fop meets Yorkshire folk titan (sounding more like her mum Norma Waterson with every passing day), and you wonder why they didn’t think to do so before now. A compelling meeting of minds.42) LE MAN AVEC LES LUNETTES – The Happy Birth of You and Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXnwZQLzrOo
Another highlight of Indietracks. Sit-down relaxed, wide-eyed joyful.43) CASSETTEBOY – Cassetteboy Vs The Bloody Apprentice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxi6QDwQyLU
The cut-and-paste maverick who earned himself column inches with the I-Can’t-Believe-You-Released-That bravery of "Di and Dodi Do Die" 12 years ago, fixes his sights on Surallan.44) ALAN POWNALL – Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28rODrLLefI
Possibly not on general release, but one of countless gems uploaded to the Indie Ghetto website this year. The Beyonce single reinterpreted as something akin to a barber’s shop performance.45) THE GOSSIP – Heavy Cross
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6k1I_OnjTU
Not a million miles removed from "Standing in the Way of Control", in all honesty, but very hard to dislike it, Beth Ditto, and all she stands for.46) RAY RUMOURS & THE NO EYE DEARS – Chaussures
(no URL available)
Ex-Electralane, ex-Lesbo Pig, acoustic low-fi splendity with diverse instrumentation. No clip available just yet.47) GOD HELP THE GIRL – Come Monday Night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxmrKav8gUM
The solo film project of Belle and Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch. Truth be told, the soundtracks appear to be closer to completion than the film!48) TODDLA T – No Kip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z69cKtISWqo
See 40.49) THE LOVELY EGGS – Haunt Me Out
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea … =100266320
Demented Lancaster husband and wife duo. You might not want your dinner after this.50) SONIC YOUTH – Sacred Trickster
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKlbBgQHPqo
Still alive! Still recording! Still kicking it!Jeremy Grayson. Son of immigrant. Adoptive father of two. Metadata librarian. December 20, 2009 at 17:18 #264687Patrick Wolf; blimey, how many influences can one guy handle..new romantics I thought, then Grant Lee Buffalo and then I gave up….when I’ve got Christmas out the way I’ll delve further. Hope his stuff is easier to purchase than Hazels [now, that would be a collaboration!]. Have never got to see Eliza; we never seem to be in the same place at the same time, although I’ve been buying her stuff for years. Remember the old saying..if you plan to marry someone see what the mother looks like first…..

Well,I got that wrong

Moving on

I saw Roxy on the Flesh and Blood tour. This is Oh Yeah…
December 21, 2009 at 20:47 #264843With all due disrespect intended, this man’s output over the last 20 years has been humdrum, mediocre and uninspiring.
This is a performance of passion, energy, brilliance and ferocity. The fact that the footage is in black and white, the fact that the recording is amateur and clumsy just makes the song even better.
December 21, 2009 at 21:50 #264857Listening to: Too Much Too Young – The Specials
Rage Against the Rage Against The MachineDecember 21, 2009 at 22:34 #264859Tor; those photos are amazing…..there’s an Alice in Wonderland quality to them.Haunting.
December 22, 2009 at 01:03 #264876Nationwide-Kate on tour.
Over 25 minutes

Merry Happy to you.
December 22, 2009 at 02:09 #264879Some stuff very new to me from GC there!
I was feeling a bit chemically depleted before I watched and listened to ‘Casiotone For The Painfully Alone’, but not anymore….

Love these and this in particular…
December 25, 2009 at 19:45 #265489Just had a bet with my son in law who likes pretty obscure music as to how many of the bands gc mentioned he has heard of..I said 5 but now realise that people like PJ Harvey, Pet Shop Boys etc are too well known…..
December 26, 2009 at 20:37 #265698Tom Waits……..Glitter and Doom
December 28, 2009 at 01:07 #265986I do like The Dreaming; was only thinking of it the other day [when I got a g’day merry christmas email from my Ozzie mate Kevin]. Think the Ting Tings are going to be a one album wonder…they seem very good live but I must admit to only playing the album a couple of times since I bought it.
