That Florence track is a curiosity in so far as which version of "You’ve Got The Love" she’s chosen to clone.
She’s not covered it in the style of the original gospel soul cut Candi released in 1986, but rather, this is a cover version of Jon Truelove’s 1997 remix of the original (one of three remixes to have charted since the original failed to – others came in 1991 and 2006).
I think I’d have liked her to try another take on it completely, to be honest. Her reading of the song adds little.
I would need to check out Stilvi’s second and third links on a laptop with a sound card (like as what this work one hasn’t) – haven’t heard of either act so the curiosity has been duly piqued. Quite agree on the talents of Lisa Hannigan, though. "Sea Saw" was a gossamer delight, and so good to see her strike out on her own after years dwarfed in the shadow of Damien Rice.

October 23, 2009 at 11:36 #254892Glad to be reminded about Lisa Hannigan as meant to get her album after seeing the Mercury Music Awards but forgot. I don’t like Florence; bought her album as soon as it came out because I’d heard so much about her..really want to like it but there’s something shallow about it; can’t pinpoint what it is…seems to come from somewhere other than the heart.
October 27, 2009 at 14:49 #255651Listen to this without melting.
Go on, try it!October 27, 2009 at 17:15 #255674I was determined not to like that, but I must admit to finding it rather lovely..a classic example of something that a friend of mine who lectures in music explained to me a few years ago, that English music evolved from The Beatles and American music from the Beach Boys. I know, obviously that the roots go back much further than that, but as a generalisation I think it holds true.

Ignore my flippancy. They were very good indeed. From the same geographical area, are you aware of the work of Hazel Winter? Spent much of the 90s as one of the battery of rhythm guitarists in Bristol alternative / beat poetry veterans The Blue Aeroplanes, but has since recorded three albums combining alt.pop, Polly Harvey-inflected compositions and the folk heritage of her native Durham. Here be a track from the latest of those albums;

This has been bigged up all year on Dandelion Radio, the spiritual home of all things Peel nowadays, and Ms Winter herself rarely gives anything other than a pitch-black, witheringly entertaining interview.

October 31, 2009 at 11:06 #256371This was the remix I was on about re -Florence; refreshing I think.
Good grief, the plot thickens yet further! This appears to be the splendid young London act The XX covering
You’ve Got The Love
in the style of precisely NONE of the previous incarnations, with what sounds like a few samples of Florence’s cover of the Jon Truelove remix of the original.
Keeping up so far?
I’d be intrigued to learn whether this release was actually badged as a Florence release remixed by The XX, as by any credible measure this is just the former being sampled on a new recording by the latter and should be treated as such.
For the record, I actually like this reading far more than Florence’s and most of the previous remixes, so as always thanks for sharing, Marb!
And by way of further listening, here’s one of The XX’s own original singles from earlier in the year. Reminds me a bit of a slighter Tricky, and that’s more of a compliment than it probably sounds;

October 31, 2009 at 12:39 #256394I have never heard of Hazel Winter; that video is wonderful, and I must get the album asap…the thing about the North East is that, unlike other parts of the country where there is an undercurrent of bitterness, people in that part of the world are so warm and friendly and welcoming. There is so much history, starting with the Border Reivers and leading to the present day riding out ceremonies.a somewhat neglected part of the country most of the time, which is good in that I have the place to myself when I go there!

I’ve never seen one so I’m guessing but you probably would stroke the keys rather than pound on them. Sorry, couldn’t let that get by.

…and having got as far as mentioning them earlier, I may as well upload some Blue Aeroplanes too. Here they are improving a Paul Simon song;

November 2, 2009 at 12:41 #256731Not knowing how to download stuff, I’ve got to send a donation to the Hazel Winter Pension Fund and she’ll send me a copy of the cd! Not sure how much to send, however..would £10 be too stingy?? Even Roots Records haven’t got it on their books.[she’s got the strangest voice, but it’s totally hypnotic….]
November 4, 2009 at 22:05 #257131Son in Law has [legally] downloaded Situation Normal Then for me; drove back happily listening to Midwich Sleep On and The Candyman Walks and am now listening to the rest of it…..when I was on holiday oop north I bought a painting by a wonderful Newcastle artist called Margaret Hutchinson..it was of allotments in Crawcrook, with gypsy caravans and ponies and chickens and men in flat caps with whippets; I shall listen to my Hazel Winter cd and gaze at me painting…[with the whippet sat next to me]….bliss….
November 4, 2009 at 23:31 #257155Ah, beat me to it! I’m sure £10 wouldn’t have been too stingy – it’s more than she would have got if the thing had been major label-distributed.
Hazel also posts a "Bleak Blog" on Youtube regularly – some of it contains her self-accompanied beat poetry, and some of it the stories behind songs on the album. From the latter;

November 4, 2009 at 23:51 #257157Yes; I’ve been reading the Bleak Blog! Have been telling my pals to check out ‘Menopause’! Love it when she says ‘I can’t be menopausal..I’ve played Glastonbury’.Don’t understand why people like Hazel Winter don’t get superfamous when other hugely inferior people become millionaires. Now to check out Dandelion Radio…..[think I still aught to send a small donation to the pension fund, though….]
November 5, 2009 at 06:55 #257172Was back in the UK for a few weeks in late september/early october and happened to notice that Muse had a new album there. Usually their albums will always have a few decent tracks so thought I’d buy it. It hasnt left my CD player since it went in. Absolutely love it…well worth a listen, not as heavy as usual (even a few symphonys on there) and can see quite a few movies soundtracks coming from the album.
