Should I book paddock tickets in advance or will we be ok buying them on the day? We did just turn up a few years back, but it’s a long way to travel and risk not getting in [although think paddock tickets shouldn’t be a problem?]. I wasn’t planning to go as I’ve got a lousy cold, but saw the horses that are [might be] running and made a miracle recovery!

You get 10% off if you book in advance (20% if you book 10 or more tickets)

Don’t think you’ll have any problems buying tickets on the day. Haven’t been to Wetherby for a few years but really can’t see you having any problems.

The Charlie Hall Chase does look it could be a very good race if the declared horses such as Silviniaco Conti and First Lieutenant actually run.

Moe, you could still pay on the gate until after the first race on Charlie Hall Chase day last year (which is what I did), and quite possibly for some time after that. Even with the lure of a cool, dry, bright autumn afternoon, the public areas were pleasantly full rather than groaning.

I’m listening to the rain at the mo and thinking I’ll wait till Saturday to decide. The trouble with good cards is that it becomes disappointing when all the good horses start dropping out [Overturn’s chasing debut for example; will be so disappointed if we get there and he doesn’t run]. And dear little Fair Along running in the hurdle race he won when we were there last time. Annoyingly got to get home as quickly as possible as the dog will be having a nervous breakdown with all the fireworks going off, so no Wetherby Whaler this year.

Had a great day. Have to thank New Beginnings, the racehorse rehabilitaion charity for bringing Mr McGoldrick along for everyone to say hello to; he has a home for life with them as their flagbearer. It was lovely to see him parade round the paddock as well. I’m sure these ex racers swell with pride when they’re brought back to the racecourse for the adulation they deserve. I know I mentioned this last time, but it was good to be surrounded by such knowledgeable racing folk

. The horses in the Charlie Hall looked a picture and it was special to see what could be a Gold Cup horse of the future. Also think a special mention is needed for Paul Nicholls travelling head girl; I don’t know who she is but, if staff like her are the backbone of a succesful racing stable you can see why PN does so well. She was pretty well running the whole show at Wetherby. My only gripe with Wetherby is not being able to get to see them jump a fence, although you can get pretty close to the last hurdle. It was a disappointment not seeing Overturn, but we did see him at York one year. And getting really close to old favourites like Midnight Chase, Tidal Bay [didn’t get TOO close to that one]Rupert and Fair Along was heaven. May go there and position ourselves in the cheap enclosure one year; the soup they were selling in the cafe looked scrumptious.
