In the good spirit of the useful course reports from TRF’s Scottish correspondents, the news from Yorkshire is it’s currently overcast/foggy and near-calm in the Wetherby area. Temperature at 1700 hrs in York is 1C, Leeds 0C and Harrogate 0C
Racing going ahead would be very much dependent on the skies remaining overcast I’d have thought
Updates later this evening
January 9, 2009 at 22:20 #202824Fingers crossed – I think you Northern boys are the lucky ones at the moment. I can see little chance of any turf racing here down sarf for a while.
I live about 10 miles from Towcester and if they had been scheduled to race this weekend they wouldn’t be – temperatures have not risen above -2 all day – it looks pretty with everything covered in frost but in no way favourable for any racing.
My worry now is the frost had got so deep into the ground it could well be a few days after temperatures return to "normal" before anything is raceable anywhere round here.

We’ve been fortunate round here in that after one of the coldest nights for a long time on Monday (-8C) resulting in a deep frost that didn’t shift at all on Tuesday, the nights have barely got below freezing and the days have struggled up to a few degrees above. If the bare soil in my garden is anything to go by it has taken until today for all Monday night’s frost to come out, and in permanently shaded corners it is still frozen a couple of inches below the surface.

Spare a thought for those of us due to play football tomorrow in the South Yorkshire Amateur League.
January 10, 2009 at 00:00 #202840All weekend leave cancelled at Barnsley A&E then?
May I humbly suggest that restricting yourself to the South Yorkshire Bar Billiards and Shove Ha’penny League (Seniors Division) would be a tad wiser these days Gus
January 10, 2009 at 00:06 #202843Agree with Paul, I’ve been looking at the same patches of ice on the ground and grass around London for the whole week and tonight it is colder outside than it has been all week – I’d chance a fiver on nothing turf near the home counties being raceable – maybe it’s warmer up north?
January 10, 2009 at 00:26 #202845Spoke too pudding senoir, he was saying that locally too us up here the frost has not completly left the ground.
The tempreture is falling, their is a little cloud cover but not allot. I have a horrid feeling that the sky will clear and the meeting will be frozen off.
Theirs a nine o’clock inspection, i hope it passes.

I love Bar Billiards and miss playing it here in the USA!
Nights of playing billiards and cider then fish and chips or a curry, those were the days!

January 10, 2009 at 00:37 #202849it will be a shame if wheterby is off .ayr looks a tricky card
January 10, 2009 at 00:48 #202851Bar billiards is tiddleywinks with marbles
I’ll go with the fish, chips and curry sauce afterwards though
January 10, 2009 at 01:17 #202857Not a very conveniant time in inspecting at 9am tomorrow.
Those if us who use the rail and bus network to go the Wetherby would probably get as far as Leeds before finding out if the meeting would be on or not.
Still i do hope Ayr and Wetherby both go ahead but with the weather getting slightly better i hope Haydock race next week and the people at the BHA transfer the Leamington Hurdle to Haydock as it is a Grade 2 event and worth salvaging and run the Classic Chase at the February Saturday Meeting at Warwick.

Watch it. I’ve graced the SYAL since 1982 and noted critics have likened my recent displays to those of a fine wine, improving and maturing with every passing year.
January 10, 2009 at 03:27 #202879At 2200 hrs -2C, fog and a windchill of -6C
Betting-wise given the card a miss myself
January 10, 2009 at 03:47 #202885Just got back from Towton, its below freezing and theirs a thick frost coming down.

My part of North London has been unraceable since at least New Year’s eve.
Incidentally there is optimism that Sunday’s point to point at Ideford Arch will make it as has a good forecast. So those craving a turf fix in Devon might want to keep an eye on the Jumping for Fun site or Talking Points for an update. The other two meetings at Barbury Castle and Higham are off., the former are believed to be trying again next weekend.
January 10, 2009 at 06:08 #202900I’d echo Drone’s sentiments. I’m 40 mins away down the M62 and cannot see it being on. It’s a proper white-over frost on the way back from the pub.
