Damn..i should have used the quote facilty
October 8, 2007 at 13:38 #118501Mikky, everyone who was interested, and that included me, already knew the result of the Rugby.
October 8, 2007 at 13:39 #118502Was Zorro standing up for Armchair racing fans in his rant?
Or just going through the motions of moaning about the BBC.
Channel 4, RUK who would have done it better.
I`m a Rugby League Fan and whilst I was concerned about the outcome of the enquiry, it had gone on long enough. The result was shown during the rugby.I have to also point out that the Beeb screened the Superleague show at 1.45pm yesterday which also showed the Leeds Wigan match. Available to see on channel 977 if you have these channels.
Luckily Zorro didnt know that or he would have written
"Then, then then….." instead of "Then, then….."To think Jakane24 didnt get his article published last year
October 8, 2007 at 13:47 #118503Why didn’t you go on to quote the bit where I said,
"But what about the people who don’t have Sky Sports"
Because the bit I quoted was the bit where you had made an assumption – that someone who was interested in Rugby League would have Sky Sports – and I didn’t see the need to spell out that you contradicted that very point in the next sentence.
Perhaps the use of the word "therefore" was unintended.
Still, if that’s how you prefer it…
October 8, 2007 at 13:47 #118504NO Michael Tabor didnt want it repeated
Is that what he told you?

October 8, 2007 at 13:56 #118509A "massive blunder"? Why?
Is Fallon going to think that Tabor is glad he’s on trial?
I can’t see it.
No, no, didn’t mean that at all. Just thought it was "in poor taste", what with the man’s trial starting the following day and all. It was more like bar banter than BBC reporting.
October 8, 2007 at 14:44 #118514Hello,
At least the BBC crossed over to a reasonably important sporting event, it used to be and could well be in the future, Ladies cricket or Curling…
regards,
doyley
October 8, 2007 at 14:53 #118517It was more like bar banter than BBC reporting
It wasn’t presented as "reporting", it was presented as "banter".
IMO, proper racing fans would understand the nature of the comment (and the meaning of the comment).
Those that may have taken it seriously probably didn’t understand what Tabor was on about.
Tabor, Magnier, O’Brien etc have really stood by Fallon since he was arrested and I’m sure that he’s got the intelligence to understand that they could have easily abandoned him.
So, if the downside to this loyalty is being the butt of a cheeky tension breaker by Tabor one afternoon in the Bois De Boulogne, then it’s a small price to pay.

October 8, 2007 at 15:02 #118519Steve,
Personally, I pretty much agree with you- a harmless comment which wouldn’t cause anyone with skin thicker than tracing paper any offence. However I doubt that a BBC producer would share that particular view, and that is why Clare Balding made a mistake IMO.
October 8, 2007 at 15:06 #118520Mikky, everyone who was interested, and that included me, already knew the result of the Rugby.
Knowing the result and watching it are completely different though don’t you think. Are you saying that you have never watched a recording of something once you know the result?
But surely this is not just about the rugby, if the BBC stayed with racing then their whole schedule would have been put out. And I dare say there are millions more fans of the scheduled night time programmes than there were of a stewards enquiry.
Don’t get me wrong Paul, if I were watching BBC, I would have loved them to stay with racing, but that view would have purely been a heart driven one – when you look at it logically, the BBC made the correct decision by far IMO.

October 8, 2007 at 15:09 #118521It was an extraordinary situation which offered the BBC a chance to prove how committed they are to horse racing.
Which they took.
October 8, 2007 at 16:07 #118528The BBC regularly disrupt their schedules for developing events and in my opinion in this case they got their priorities wrong. At one time or another, every follower of every sport experiences last minute changes of schedule and in this case it should have been the turn of Rugby League fans. This wasn’t just another race or just another race meeting, it was Europe’s top flat race and though it was a tricky call to make, I agree with Zorro that they got it wrong.
October 8, 2007 at 16:35 #118537I had backed the winner on Betfair but after watching the replays began to get a bit anxious so I was then able to back the runner up at 3, to guarantee me a profit. I had no sooner sat down when Statto told us that both the winner and the second were trading on Betfair at 5/6 to ‘good money’. I went back to Betfair and found this simply was not the case. You could still back Youmzain at 2.6, and there was only about £100 on offer. Where does he get his facts?.
October 8, 2007 at 16:54 #118541Does anyone remeber the "famous" occassion when the Beeb were covering the Hennessy on the same day as a rugby match………..from memory, the horses were approaching the second last when they switched over to the rugby where the anthems were being sung.
I don’t think that it was a dream, but these days you never know , that’s BBC’s commitment to racing.

October 8, 2007 at 16:59 #118542Good to see someone in print criticise the appalling decision of the BBC to go to the recorded rugby. The stewards enquiry only lent weight to showing up the total inadequacies of the BBC’s personnel covering the sport. Carson was laughable, it cried out for someone of the ability of Lydia Hislop.
I see McCririck stated the Beeb’s coverage was fantastic on ATR today, especially Angus Loughran and Jim McGrath.
Something that amazed me and that received no mention from Paul Haigh or even anyone on here unless I’ve missed it was the Beeb’s betting guru making absolutely no mention of the betting exchanges the entire weekend until the stewards enquiry in the Arc. The vast majority of the time the prices were considerably better on Betfair than either the PMU or the bookies.October 8, 2007 at 17:59 #118550as i had a nice each way bet on youmzain i was livid when they went to the rugby, the tension was building nicely and it made compulsive viewing, out of interest if it had been snooker and it was the deciding game, both players level, just the colours left would they have gone to the rugby………….i dont think so,chipmunk
October 8, 2007 at 18:19 #118552I think the beeb made the right decision. The presenters had run out of things to say about the race/enquiry and everyone was just hanging around waiting for something to happen.
