Cheltenham and the jump season.
First really good jump meeting of the season outside of Ireland kicks of today with some really good racing over the next 2 days.
To get into the swing of things it would be nice to compare opinions on a few of the races.
The World Of Jump Racing Novices’ Chase
Only a 4 horse race but it caught my eye immediately as a potential money earner.
No doubt PN’s will be well forward this and at first glance it looks a 2 horse race between Frontier Dancer and Rebel Du Maquis however Martin Keighley apparanrtly has a differnt idea. Wolf Moon has been working really well at home and is well prepped up for this they say he jumps for fun and he has already won twice at Cheltenham
4 horse races are never easy to work out especiaaly novice events
evens to around 5/4 for a PLACE on Betfair looks the wisest bet here.Pertemps Handicap Hurdle
The Pipe McCoy combination will be very popular here and Lough Derg would tke the roof of the stands if by some miracle he were to win this.
No doubt AP’s will start fav but the race has that dreaded look about it when you just know somethig is likley to pop up and beat him.
However Nick Willams runs the frustrating Sangfroid here who will get every yard of the trip.
He ran well at this meeting last season and Nick Williams seems to have his string in good form.
He’s a bit one paced but will love the ground and the trip and looks a good ew bet.
Sangfroid EW.

If Calgary Bay had been trained by Nicky Henderson, Jonjo or PN he wouldn’t even be entered is this. He got 3 miles round Donnie but looked a blatant non stayer in the Gold Cup. Maybe it’s a fact finding mission and maybe I’m wrong and he’ll win. On his best for he’d beat this lot doing hand stands. Only problem is they don’t seem to have a clue what they are doing at times so I’m bypassing him here.
I’m having a bey on PN’s Meanus Dandy who isn’t good enough for PN to have in mind for some huge prize later in the season. Hopefully I’m right and he’s as fit as a flea and takes this.
Lemington Maiden Hurdle
There’s plenty market support for Fiulin here after running a big race at The Festival behind Menorah and Get Me Out Of Here. There appears to be a worry about him staying extreme trips but I’m more woried about him as a horse full stop.
Sprinter Sacre was held in high regard at 7 barrows last season and PN’s all but beat him in a fairly hot bumper at Ascot. Alan King’s horse who finsihed 3rd gave the form a bit of a boost when just failing to win a half decent bumper at Market rasen.
I make PN’s King of the Night the best bet of the day.
Saturday
Just about everyone I’ve talked to are saying Ruby’s is a certainty in the first race. Whether it’s rumour started by an over enthusiastic punter or PN has really gone out of his way to try and win the Ruby Hurdle with Aiteen Thirtythree with Ruby on board I don’t know but I’ll be backing him early to find out. Seems half the country is out to bet him so he won’t be a great price.

The front running Ultimate wouldn’t be wise to try and match strides with Barizan in this or he’s very likely to find himself gasping for air after 3 hurdles.
Royal Mix was hyped big time last season but we never seen enough of him to know how good he is. The fact the second kicked Sang Bleu into touch in a Grade 1 next time will have punters thinking he’s some kind of superstar.
He may well be but on closer inspection, how fit was Me Voici that day and how much was the ground against him. He went on to win twice but in much more testing conditions and probably imprioved a stone for the run wheras PN’s who started at 1/3 would be fit as fiddle that day.
I’ll stick with Barizan in this

May i modestly suggest that there"s a bit of a difference getting the trip in the Gold cup to getting it against this lot! If
Calgary Bay
is fit enough,he"s good enough in my humblest opinion!

Hard to argue with that. Bigger problem could be his fitness, a lot of these are having a run and wil be back guns blazing for the next meeting.
Like Wolf Moon who lost out in a photo for 2nd after taking his time in the early stages.
Sangfroid has been gambled of the board from 12/1 to 6/1……..wasn’t me

Non stayer or did he get tired Gord? Haven’t see it yet.
Was counting my winning with Sangfroid until he decided hurdles are for kicking not jumping
The all important best bet of the day won in a canter……just gotta love the jump game

Failed to stay is probably fair. Ran up to the all the way leader and traded fairly low ( I matched 2.22 was lower matched – 10 taken in running ).
Good shout with King Of The Night. I took 5 ( 3.75 before the off ) in running about him after Fuilin went off like a cut cat. Looks a very interesting prospect for Nichols/Walsh. Sprinter Sacre will go off pretty short when he Maidens after that.

Certainly looked like he was going to take a hand in the finish but then stopped like shot. He made a shocker of a mistake early doors and I’ve seen him travelling better at that stage of a race so it could have been partially down to tiredness but he also looked like his stamina just went. Wouldn’t like to be the one to try and talk Hen into dropping him back in trip as she no doubt still thinks he’s a Gold Cup horse.
He’ll never win a Gold Cup and not just because he doesn’t get the trip, even if he did he spends too much time in the air and losing precious ground aat half his fences. She should really try and run him within his comfort zone before she ruins him.
Well done and having the savvy to back KOK in running. Looks to have good future but although that looked like a fast run race it was quite the opposite. Forms probably not worth much but the winner could be worth following.
October 15, 2010 at 19:19 #322575Well done fist!
Can’t wait! Here’s to a great season!
October 15, 2010 at 19:30 #322579Really excited about the new season – maybe it because I’m going to chelt tom – more than a few nice horses running tomorrow
more than all – might be a changing of the guard this season with many of the younger horses stepping up to the plate want to see billie magern tom but there are quite few others that i need to see how they handle chelt
either way or it might be cos i live in gods country – this season has got me excited about some of the possible chasers we have – and its been a few years since i have said that licking my lips about some of the chases im going to see
bring it on
October 15, 2010 at 19:51 #322589Non stayer or did he get tired Gord? Haven’t see it yet.
It wasn"t pretty Fist, the untrained eye would shout Non stayer! I will give him the benefit of the doubt as any horse that can go round 3 miles at Doncaster with 11-10 on his back in 6 Minutes easing down is no donkey! He never looked like winning at any point today even when he touched 11/10 in running as you know he just wont find anything off the bridle and he spent far too long in the air at some fences, once or twice he clouted them too! I only had a small interest as i have stated as theres a long season ahead but that was dissapointing!

I don’t think anyone would have to train their eyes very long to work out that the 3m course at Cheltenham is a significantly tougher staying test than Doncaster. Sure he can win again over the trip on a flat track but never at Cheltenham.

That’ll sell a few extra books for Ruby today. Had me worried a for a second but between yesteray and today I’ve now got a free bet on Frankel. If he wins watch out Barizan

Geez where did that come from. He just kicked 2 class hurdlers into touch like they were platers.
Got to send him for one of the CH trials looks a real prospect.

Nicky Henderson had 2 entered for the bumper Bear’s Affair who was taken out and won midweek and the reportedly better Lets Get Serious. He’ll have to be to beat the front two in the betting but when Nicky’s get touted they very seldom don’t win or go close.
Bumpers are tough races to be too confident in so I’m hopefully covering my backside so I don’t come out losing as long as he runs a decent race.
Get on lads and follow my lead.
100 pts PLACE on Betfair
Let’s get Serious
somehwere between 1.5 and 1.7
Whatever price I get will dictate how much I put on for a win
example: 1.6 would mean 60pts win Lets Get Serious
Great meeting can’t wait for the nest one.
