I am reading on social media that, ahead of the July meeting which commences on Thursday, the CoC is today embarking on a full cycle of irrigation, 10-12mm being applied.

Given the weather forecast for the week ahead, this seems an interesting decision.

Quite frankly this is getting beyond a joke – potentially applying 10-12mm is in no way what should be put on to maintain the ground as it is currently (that is usually around 5mm based on previous comments COTC’s have made when trying to maintain good to firm ground).

Part of me hopes they get more rain than forecast after watering and it upsets everyone enough because trainers declared expecting good to firm and actually got something nearer soft false ground.

I’m at Newmarket for the next two days, racing and the sales. Recently arrived at my base near Huntingdon and it’s wet. If Newmarket has managed to avoid the heavy showers that have followed me across country, it’ll be luck rather than judgement.

Shocking weather last week, but I’ve been at Goodwood amid bad weather before – https://youtu.be/Jc7qZPi1nNQ – but it wasn’t actually unraceable.

I’m told 54mm was put in the track 22nd-26th July – is artificial watering resulting in Britain’s racecourses no longer being able to take the rain the way they once could?

That’s a moot point and I wouldn’t discount it. We happen to be just north of the gulf stream and that accounts for rain filled blustery drop in temperature. As an aside I met someone twenty years back who told me very privately that they over brushed their teeth, and his dentist had told him to stop it, as his teeth were slowly eroding.

Todays Racing Post front page is akin to a local council not bothering to unblock the drains and when the road floods..blame “climate change”
