    “6.6 on 26-05-2023 at 16:00”

Latest going stick reading at Epsom.

The water Cooper must have put on the track to achieve that during the current spell of weather doesn’t bear thinking about.

It’s a miracle anyone in the area can get running water when they turn their taps on.

I assume 6.6 equates to good to soft?

6.4 is soft, 7.1 good to soft so it is swaying more to soft.

The more I know the less I understand.

It depends on the track – the same reading can mean different things at different venues.

But at the April meeting it was 5.5 and that was Soft, Heavy in places!

Was there not a suggestion once to call ‘all weather’ racing ‘artificial surface’ instead? Strong argument to be had that anything with ‘soft’ in the description after it hasn’t rained for a fortnight plus also fits that description.

Whilst I appreciate that we can’t race on concrete, it’s an outdoor sport and if the weather is dry then that’s that. Should water enough to make it raceable and no more.

    100% Richard.

I find the going stick archive very illuminating and here is an extract from it: “5 Furlong: 7.3 Derby: 7.4 on 04-06-2022 at 10:00.”

That was at 10am on Derby Day last year the day Desert Crown won The Derby, it was actually officially “Good” by race time and the winner was a respectable 1.18 seconds outside standard.

So in that context it’s hard to view 6.6 as anything other than Good to Soft as CAS suggests.

Can’t see how 5.5 at one track is much different to 5.5 at any other track unless the make up of the ground makes a difference.

The more I know the less I understand.

I think that’s exactly it, RTB, I think it’s down to things like whether it’s a chalk or clay subsoil.

You’d think, say, 5.5 would be the same everywhere, but if you look in the going stick archive at different tracks and at the race times on the day, there is some variance.

But I think we’re all in agreement that if anything it’s on the Good to Soft side of Good at Epsom despite the current weather.

    The track’s been “Cooperfied!”

The main reason iv not backed soul sister for the oaks yet

Disgraceful really and is harming the thoroughbred racehorse as a species

Horses with glass legs like calyx and too darn hot end up going to stud

Whereas poetic flare with his legs of steel running every other week is sold to stand in japan

    You absolutely nailed it, FF91.

    Couldn’t agree more.

Andrew Cooper at Epsom just loves the taps.

Cooper said on Monday: “We’ve walked the track and it is fair to call most of it is good, but there may be some good to firm in places coming in. We did not water on Sunday but did on Monday, and that will be repeated tomorrow, and the discussion is in the 3-5mm territory.”

Cooper said watering was likely to happen every day up until Friday.

    “2400m GP: 9.5, 2000m GP: 9.8, 1600m GP: 10, 1400m NP: 10.2, 1000m LD: 9.5” – the various going stick readings at Longchamp today.

6.6 at Epsom and it’s getting an entire reservoir put on it.

Track record unlikely to be in any great jeopardy in The Derby on Saturday.

Looks like the clerk of the course can’t compete with the sun and it will be good at least. The Derby much better when it’s the firm side of good IMHO. Nothing better than hearing the rattle of the hoofs.

“Looks like the clerk of the course can’t compete with the sun”

I wouldn’t absolutely bank on that.

If Cooper can find a way to erase the word “Firm” from a going description, he will!

Just imagine savethelastdance blitzing the field and scorching home. Or whoever you fancy in the Derby. Having said that snowfalls win in the soft was amazing. Fav Derby I’ve attended was teenosos win. Won a few bob that day. Had carlingford Castle won though would have paid for my weekend trip to Epsom plus a cracking night out. Watching Lester win was marvellous though. Still my fav British sportsman followed by Ken buchanan.
